  1. for me, it's just over 5 weeks until I visit japan again :emotawesomepm9:

Jealous! Really want to get to Japan soon.

Went to Iceland with my sister a couple of weeks ago, had a great time. Went hiking from Skogafoss to Basar (Thorsmork), spent some time in Reykjavik, and then ended with time in the Westfjords in Flateyri. Here are some choice shots:

Will be back in Shanghai by the end of the month; if any of you are in the neighborhood, DM me!

  2. Got into this guy once for a bit before I went to see him live. What he played live was AWESOME but sounded nothing like anything on any of his albums. Would his "commission pieces" I see mentioned be more similar to live?

Hmm, depends when you saw him. Those commissioned pieces were all for individual events, so unless you were at the Magnetic Rose showing in Manchester, Red Bull event in Tokyo, etc., it won't be so similar to what you might have heard live. If you went to see him open for NIN, you may have gotten a very unique experience judging from the videos of his set; he hasn't really released anything like that before, and I can only really compare it to TCF. If you saw him just on his own, it was probably reworks of R Plus Seven material, which will likely never be released. When I saw him last year at Big Ears, it was all reworked R+7 stuff; pretty interesting but the bass sounded terrible. I feel like 0PN live is more about hearing unreleased material PLUS watching Nate Boyce's amazing visuals.

Long story short, listen to the commissioned works; "Commissions II" may be similar to what you heard live if you saw him fairly recently, given that it's his most recent material.

OR (!!!) you may have heard his newest tunes, i.e. WARPLP2. What did it sound like?

  3. Opn has someone else mixing his stuff? since when? I always though some of Squarepusher's material from the past 5 years or so could have benefitted from someone else mixing it, but i always just assume most electronic artists mix their own stuff (probably a dumb assumption on my part)

Yeah, I think everything after Reliquary House has been mixed and produced(?) with Paul. He seems to be Software's/Dan's go-to guy lately, although post-Reliquary has been all Warp. Color me confused.

  4.

And when you click and drag, a circle appears..

    What does it mean?!?

It means the gamma on your monitor isn't calibrated correctly  (should be visible even without the draggin')

Haha touché, although that's the only time I've ever seen it, and it moves with the cursor. I'd fix my laptop if it wasn't already so old..

Paul Corley has been tweeting recently about mixing new 0PN:

  5. Copped this when it first came out; really, really love it. This and the Errorsmith collab on PAN are in my top 5 of 2015 so far.

also listen to this absolutely lush track (not associated with this album, but also by mark fell):

Love this; is it a track released exclusively for The Wire?

sounds great, but it doesn't sound like a collaboration, it sounds just like a pretty decent Fell workout

I feel like Gabor's stuff is already very similar to Mark's, but with a focus on one note's articulation, sans percussion. "Neurobiology" sounds more like Gabor's stuff to me, with finishing touches and snare/kick placement by Mark. Either way it sounds great.

  6. Ex Machina

Really enjoyed this; gave me 'Her' vibes with its minimalist future look. There are some interesting thoughts on A.I. placed throughout, and the cinematography is gorgeous for the most part. The compound/set is really cool, and I thought the acting was pretty top notch.

  7. This has been my go-to reading album of late! In addition to complimenting the mood of Solaris quite nicely, I find it has just the right amount of detail to be engaging as both foreground or background tunes.

Anyone pick up the vinyls? Impressions? I'm considering getting this one

Just got my vinyl in the mail today; haven't spun them yet, but the packaging is lush. Heavy printed inner sleeves for each LP. The finish on the jacket is kind of matte-y, looks real nice. Bill really knocked it out of the park with the album artwork on this one.

  8. So I've just finished Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage by Haruki Murakami.

Great read, with some introspective moments and the unique loneliness I always seek with Murakami. It's a book I would recommend to young adults, not just because it's an "easy" read, but 'cause it has some issues most people confront around those times.

Recommend me my next Murakami. I've already read Hardboiled Wonderland...

    Kafka on the Shore

  9. Anybody else having clipping issues with this one? Maybe it's just my shitty pre-amp. It's most noticeable in the beginning of "Music For Steamed Rocks."

And super late on the show review, but the performance was great; definitely one of the highlights of Big Ears. The historic theater was full when he started playing, but by the time he finished, only a quarter of the seats were filled. A middle-aged man sitting next to me left after the first 15 minutes, saying "This sucks; sounds like 80s pop music!" His loss. My only complaint was that Daniel was a little too heavy on the bass; it drowned out the highs in some places. He should have asked Tim Hecker for advice because Tim's EQing was spot on for his performance.

As far as Big Ears performances go, I'd rank him third: 1) Colin Stetson 2) Tim Hecker 3) 0PN 4) Julian Holter 5) Vatican Shadow
