building a MIDI splitter/THRU box

i sure as hell am not going to pay $50 for one of these.

 

anyone ever tried this? it seems really simple

 

i wonder if i could pick female 5-pin pieces for the cables at a local electronic shop? i hope that sort of thing is fairly common.

 

i don't know a lot about electronics, but i recall that in MIDI cables only 3 of the 5 pins are used. it seems like it would be really easy to just split the signal from one input to 4-5 outputs. i don't know what else i need to do.

 

perhaps add a few more components keep the signal strong for each output

 

let's hear some ideas

what do you need it for? There could be other possibilities.

my purpose is to control 5 devices with my my computer (which has an midi IN/OUT interface)

only 1 of the external devices has a midi THRU port, so I can't chain them all together, or controll them all at the same time with my computer unless I have this splitter box.
