The playlist of songs to which snowboarders will ride the Cypress halfpipe Wednesday has been crystallizing alongside the Olympic start list as athletes aim to distinguish their performances with tunes which strike a balance between edgy and ironic.

Phenom Shaun White, known to perform against a backdrop of hard rock such as AC/DC and Led Zepplin, is expected to drop into the Olympic halfpipe channeling the energy of hip hop artists Das Racist's Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, adding levity to the most tension-filled competition of the season.

Jonathan Oetker, who is known as DJ DC and has been spinning on private snowboard circuits for more than 10 years, believes music adds dimension to the already visually appealing event.

"[Music] just makes it a better event. It just makes the atmosphere more fun," he said.

"If the riders are listening, you can definitely amp them up by finding out what music inspires them, what music they like and you can just bump whatever they like.

When heavy fog delayed portions of the ladies' snowboard cross event on Tuesday, Mike Makagawa, who is spinning for the Olympic freestyle and snowboard events at Cypress Mountain, riled the crowd with Grand Master Flash's The Message and Empire State of Mind by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys.

"I think each snowboarder is unique in their own style of snowboarding,"said Makagawa, who is known as DJ Naka-G. "They're all really unique with their music too."

At the 2008 Winter X Games in Aspen, Colo., American Gretchen Bleiler dropped into the halfpipe to M.C. Hammer's Can't touch This; last year American rider Scott Lago selected Christmas music to be played during some of his runs. Danny Kaas, who is not competing at the Games, has often favoured The Misfits.

"[Halfpipe competitor] Louie Vito, he wants to play pretty much all new gangster rap and new hip hop. Shaun White wants AC/DC: Back in Black or Led Zepplin: Communication Breakdown," Makagawa said.

Wednesday's events will feature censored versions of any song that contains profanity, VANOC officials confirmed.

"It's so mixed and matched. Some guys want punk, some guys want new rock, some guys want hip hop," Makagawa said.

"Some of the guys in New Zealand I've seen in the pipe they want jungle music, electronic music that's a little bit faster and upbeat.

"It just really adds to the atmosphere. If you went to a contest and there was no music at all it would seem very dull and boring and quiet."

Oetker expects the Olympic crowd will deliver a good buzz for athletes and music will bolster their spirits further.

"Having a live DJ to show who's actually using turn tables, cutting it up and mixing it makes it more fun for the spectators in between heats. It's a little more of an outdoor party.

"I've done contests before where it's beautiful sunny weather and it kind of turns into an outdoor party."

it's too bad antarctica isn't a real country that can participate IDM :trashbear:
