i had never fully acknowledged that this was the case until reading through this thread. so incredibly puzzling, has there ever been an official company-acknowledged explanation for them not including this functionality? i mean the explanation joshier puts forth makes sense, but how would that translate to marketing-speak i wonder..

 

for the longest time i would try to cut and paste and then realize THEY WANT ME TO USE THE MOUSE TO MOVE A FILE... wow, lame. one small criticism though overall, i do like OS X despite the limitations you sometimes come across.

here are some of my thoughts on the matter:

Since Quicksilver is ultra buggy and not really fixed by anyone anymore i switched to it and it's quite better anyway.

It's works basically like Spotlight, except it's a bit smarter recognizing input shortcuts (i.e "ae" for "Autechre" actually works), and you can use it not only to find and launch files, but to act upon them, i.e. if you want to cut a folder "Autechre" and paste it to your Documents, you simply select the folder and hit a modifier key (i've got it mapped to ctrl) to invoke LaunchBar. Then you can execute all sorts of context-sensitive actions on the folder (or file, or anything). Type "doc" + enter will move it to your Documents folder (equivalent to cut/paste). Type "zip" + enter will zip it, and select the zip file, then type "jd" + enter to send it to a person "John Doe" from your address book as email attachment, etc, etc.

 

I don't usually pay for software, except for this and TextMate.

i bought a license for LaunchBar years ago, definitely one of the better purchases i'd made. great program

thanks for the tips; i'll look at it tonight! i really love quicksilver for the simple improvements it has allowed but this sounds even better.

yeh the main bonus is that it's stable and all modules work. It lacks some things which were in QS, but also has a lot of things you couldn't do with QS.

If anyone knows a similar software for windows, out with it!
