A good fuck-shit-up friend of mine has performed his magnum opus.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - A teenager who took a trip down a river on an ice floe said Sunday that he's more bothered by the trip he took to jail afterward.

"It was dumb. I know that. It was pretty stupid. But it was all in fun," Michael Poland said of his quarter-mile voyage through downtown Fairbanks. "Having to spend a night in jail over it was just ridiculous."

The 18-year-old high school student, who said he's never even had a speeding ticket, was jumping on ice along the Chena River with friends Friday night. A 10-by-15-foot piece broke off, and Poland hopped on. His friends tossed him a milk crate to sit on and the lid of a cooler to paddle.

The river channel was filling with spring melt, but Poland said he was never worried that he was in danger.

"My buddies, they have boats at their house. They could have came and got me if I got hung up," he told The Associated Press. "And the water isn't that deep. I mean it's really cold and it's dangerous, and all that good stuff, but it was really shallow."

Still, multiple people called 911 reporting five people jumping on river ice.

The floe got hung up after about a quarter mile, and firefighters launched an inflatable boat and came to Poland's assistance. The boat bottomed out twice on their way over, Poland said.

When he got to shore, he was cuffed, placed in a police car and taken to Fairbanks Correctional Center. Officer Robert Hall told the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner that Poland was charged with disorderly conduct for creating a hazardous condition for the firefighters who rescued him.

Poland spent the night in jail and resolved the case the next day. He was sentenced to 10 days in jail with all 10 suspended, 50 hours of community service and fined more than $100.

His desire to get out of jail persuaded him to not fight the charges.

what can I say. Fuck the pohleece. Fuck yeah to Mikey.

FAIRBANKS - A short trip down the Chena River atop an ice floe earned a Fairbanks teenager a night in jail following his rescue by Fairbanks Fire Department personnel Friday.

Michael Poland’s unexpected journey began near Graehl Park landing and concluded about a half-mile downriver behind the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center where he was rescued after two firefighters launched a red, inflatable rescue boat into the frigid water.

Cheers rose from a couple dozen spectators lining the riverbank as rescuers pulled carefully alongside the fragile-looking, 10-foot by 15-foot ice floe where Poland sat calmly on a plastic milk crate talking on a cellphone.

Dressed in jeans, a short-sleeve T-shirt, and tennis shoes, the 18-year-old stepped into the rescue boat and donned a red life vest provided by his rescuers, before the boat continued downstream to a landing near Golden Heart Park.

The current was reportedly too swift to return to Graehl Landing.

Along with numerous emergency vehicles and public safety personnel on the scene, Fairbanks Police were also on hand when Poland made landfall. He was arrested, handcuffed and stowed in a waiting police cruiser for his second unanticipated trip of the evening — this time to the Fairbanks Correctional Center.

Police Officer Robert Hall said Poland was being charged with disorderly conduct for creating a hazardous condition for the Fire Department members who rescued him.

According to police records, numerous 911 calls started coming in shortly before 10 p.m. Friday, reporting five people jumping on river ice near the Graehl Landing.

A member of Volunteers in Policing went to investigate and reported that part of the ice, with someone on it, had broken away and was floating downstream under the Wendell Street Bridge.

According to Drake Ackerman, Before Poland was out of reach his friends managed to throw him a dark green milk crate to sit on and a white cooler lid to use as a paddle through the swirling current.

Ackerman confirmed that he and Poland and some other friends were playing on the ice near the Graehl boat landing when the ice floe broke loose stranding Poland on it.

Poland spent the night in jail and was arraigned before a magistrate Saturday afternoon. According to FCC booking he was sentenced to 10 days in jail with 10 days suspended, and released.

In the charging documents put together by Officer Robert Hall, Poland is quoted as saying that “What I did was kind of stupid.”

This fellow belongs in the hall of heroes. Pretty crazy that they arrested him.

Yeah. It really is unfair. to quote mikey from fairbanks daily news miner:

My life was in no danger at all at that moment. the thing that gets me is that i was told that i wasn't doing anything illegal and would not be arrested.

I hope I got this right. If a person's actions, intentional or not, creates a hazardous situation for a rescue team, that person goes to jail. When did we start doing that? Does that apply to motorists or hikers who get lost or break down in the dead of winter? Mountain climbers who need help off the mountain should get felony time. How about home owners whose houses catch on fire because of some preventible reason? The cop, the DA, and the judge were all wrong on this one. That kid (great picture, by the way) should scream bloody murder.
