DREDD 3D

Saw this over the weekend. I cannot emphasise enough how good this film is. I'll try and enumerate some of the ways... I'm keeping this as spoiler free as I can...

1/ Dredd is played particularly well, with Karl Urban delivering a more than decent performance as Ol' Stony face.

2/ Anderson is in the film! Not as vampy as some of the almost-porno realisations in old issues of 2000 AD, Olivia Thirlby plays the character as a much more believable rendering of the original. Her psi ability is visualised well, and its not over-used.

3/ The visuals are pretty amazing. They've rendered the world on a budget, but kept the feeling of the vertiginous blocks from MC-1. Some of the story arc has allowed them to zoom in on the action in exquisite detail. Visually sumptuous :).

4/ The weapons and weapon effects are mesmerising. This is not the A-team, with people disappearing underneath a hail of bullets and brushing the dust off their clothes afterwards... the weapons in Dredd have real maleficent character and spit hot and cold death.

5/ The story is pretty tight. Rather than go for a sprawling epic, they've reduced it to the 2000ad equivalent of a 2 issue short. Its allowed them to hone in on the characters and interaction a lot more and deliver a human scale story where you see and feel the consequences of what is going on. This definitely isn't "the story starts, some people did some things on screen, then off screen many more people did things, then millions of people did some things off screen, then another million people did some things off screen, the end."

I wasn't expecting much and was blown away enough to think about actually owning this on dvd/blu-ray. Anyone else seen this?

@tec I wouldn't worry about the 3D too much. It actually works for this, which would make some sense given that Rebellion Games aren't too far away from it.

I'm a 2000ad man, got back into it last year after being away for about a decade. It's still a brilliant comic, and everything I've heard suggests the film does it justice. GETTIT, JUSTICE?

So yeah I'll be seeing this soon.
