juiceciuj Posted June 17, 2016 Share Posted June 17, 2016 looking to add a bit of life to an aging pc (6+ years old) that will probably be passed down next year when i do a completely new build. here's what i currently have: GIGABYTE GA-P55-USB3 LGA 1156 Intel P55 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard Western Digital Blue WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive Intel Core i5-750 Lynnfield Quad-Core 2.66 GHz LGA 1156 95W BX80605I5750 Processor XFX Radeon HD 5770 DirectX 11 HD-577X-ZMF3 1GB 128-Bit DDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 CrossFireX Support Video Card with ... XFX P1-650X-CAH9 650W ATX12V v2.2 / ESP12V v2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active ... just looking to upgrade the video card to one of those newfangled amd rx480 cards and a ssd (probably 500gb samsung 850) think it's worth it? hoping to spend ~$350 or less next year after some of this years new components come down a bit i'm looking to build myself a real beast Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Hodorsbn Posted June 17, 2016 Share Posted June 17, 2016 Yes that's an old processor, but not horrible, should be fine for basic use, and the motherboard itself doesn't affect system speed much at all unless configured poorly. "ddr3" doesn't mean much in itself, that's plenty of theoretical bandwidth, it's more the amount of RAM that matters. If you're frequently running at near max usage that's gonna make everything slow cause it's paging to the HDD for program data, and especially with an old HDD it can get bad. Start with the SSD, maybe do a fresh OS install, see how that improves things, then consider a major overhaul if it's still bad. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
