deutsche elektronische musik 2 - experimental german rock and electronic music 1972-83: exactly what it says on the label, gorgeous 2 disc set of crazy warm electronic synth treated rock muzik. think along the lines of can, neu! and krafwerk as well as some guys who were probably just two doors down the studio where the likes of peter thomas was doing his library treatments. in fact, this is kinda similar to that parry compilation public-info put out last year except it occasionally takes detours into different directions like pastal folk (like on 'in a sacred manner' by gila) or new age ('Ja Sie Sollen Gottes Kinder Heissen Agnus Dei' by popol vuh). and when things go library, they discard the cheesy disco and plug in the heavy psych rock.
also worth noting: it's well over two hours (and there are two of these in the market right now), because most of the songs like to get a really good workout, and to be honest, so does your brain.

Prurient's live show is intense. That guy can get himself worked up into a fury like nobody's business.
i went to one of his shows in brooklyn. he had his back to the audience during the entire set. people were shouting "turn around" so they could see him. he eventually walked off looking pretty pissed off.

i actually really loved season 2. you guys didn't enjoy the thing about radio signals from space, the black lodge and windom earle? i honestly think i enjoy season 2 more than season 1.

denise crosby gave up her star trek gig because she (supposedly) wasn't getting enough screen time. years later, she's doing this. note to self: denise crosby would make a wonderful dominatrix

it was retailing for 20 bucks (cd) and 30 bucks (vinyl) when it came out 7 years ago. it currently says it's out of stock so anything even remotely close to that price range is a steal (imo)

big apple rappin': the early days of hip-hop culture in new york city 1979-1982: a banging two disc compilation of golden era raps (read as: rapping over disco-electro breaks and jams). it's interesting to hear how the sound of hiphop has changed over the years from introspective fun fueled jams to naive mocks and braggadocio- this contains the former with people i'd never heard of before like t ski valley, super 3 and universal 2 -who have possibly my favorite track on the set as well as general echo rapping dub style (that's the name of the track which is also the name of the style).
crazy good and a priceless piece of rap history (although i got mine for the bargin steal price of $15)

ben affleck goes to rescue a bunch of argumentative consolate workers in iran during a crisis under the pretex of being a film producer. nice use of shaky cam and medium wide close-up because this is intense you know?

change the beat: the celluloid records story 1980-1987: a massive compilation of the french early hiphop/new wave/boogie label celluloid, run as a vanity project by the guy in charge of BYG and bill laswell.
what we have here is a mixture of old school breaks, funk, synth wave and electronic disco jam rap with people like fab five freddy, grandmixer d st, bongostars and manu di bango making an appearance (albiet most of these tracks are remixes or b-sides of some kind from rare 45s).
if you're into this sort of thing, you'll get A LOT of entertainment out of this. also comes packed with all the information about this scene that one can possibly hope to have without "having been there"

cherrystones - red nails: this sounds a lot like something the gaslamp killer would make (especially queen bee) except this has more of an electronic pedigree behind some of the song influences (molecular battler for example is basically early analog power electronics and the title track slightly resembles early non or einsturzende neubauten on a more hiphop tip). definitely a banger

nice and fun little (kids) film 8 out 10 coin ups

weird movie that takes full advantage of robert z'dar's chin to sketch a messy plot about a... maniac cop.
this film is about an ex-cop turned serial killer who goes after the (ny)police department because they screwed him over (particularly the police commissionar) and is currently stalking the city killing both innocent citizens and cops in an attempt to clear his name
any of this sound familiar?

an eye candy hall of fame classic that boasts the 3 members of the all century team: the ever-so-lovely brinke stevens, the majestic beauty of michelle bauer, and the sultry linnea quigley. this film set the standards of how b-movies are rated.
