  1. Just got back from The Predator. It absolutely sucked. Story made no sense whatsoever (even with the confines of the film itself). Tonally all wrong and the scenes just seem to have been assembled in some haphazard order.

The finished film didn't test well with early screenings. They re-shot a bunch of it and spliced in said parts to what was the finished movie. Makes sense it would be shite.  It sounded like a disaster from day one really.

  2. Cannot recall last time I played a record 5 times in a day. If ever.

Could do a few more before bedtime tbh.

It's been a weird listening day for me. Collapse about three times today interspersed with stuff from Opeth's back catalog.

I want to listen to durichroma! It's too bad that I only bought the ep twice! Anyone can help?

go to the aphex twin warp net dude.
thanks a bunch, but not quite what I'm asking

Well, you can just buy the track itself. But, I'm assuming you're looking for... you know...

    your assumption seems correct!

    for the record

    t69 collapse [durichroma] > T69 collapse

  4. Started Fargo Season 3. Enjoying it but it's got an odd vibe to it - even though it's 2010 some of the characters feel plucked from the 70s. I'm a sucker for the franchise though, same dark humor-tinged villains versus aloof/ goofy but morally sound citizens.

Wasn't a fan of this season for the 1st half compared to the other 2. But man, it rallies fucking bigtime. Meta as all hell. The bus crash/forest chase episode. epic.

  6. Tiny mix tapes review

Richard D. James is so cagey about his public presence that his fame seems to border on the unilateral. He can go 13 years without releasing a proper album, anonymously drop hundreds of unreleased tracks onto Soundcloud, and plant portentous Aphex Twin logos on edifices around the globe, all while operating more or less sub rosa. From there, his fans take these elusive “publicity” tactics and bring them to the attention of the world at large. James seems to cultivate himself as the ascetic studio craftsman, wishing only to toil away in obscurity but for his ravenous fans who shine the spotlight on him time and again.

By virtue of their ceaseless fervor and intuitive sleuthing, Aphex Twin constituents have willed Richard D. James into the enigmatic lodestar of electronic music that he’s known as today. So on Collapse, his latest EP under the Aphex name, there’s a certain antipathy and cynicism present, a kind of misanthropy that could be found in a hermit who revels in mystery and only offers fleeting, furtive indications of his existence. In typical Aphex Twin fashion, the percussion is busy and disorienting, yet his synthesizers suggest more of a malaise. On “1st 44,” the keyboards sound lethargic over the intricate, fussy rhythms. On “abundance10edit[2 R8’s, FZ20m & a 909],” they feel nebulous and errant, as the song meanders with uncertainty before finally disappearing into an ether of hazy synth sounds. Nervousness and disaffection are evoked continuously on the EP, and James channels them with a masterful sense of conflict between man and machine.

Collapse strives to alienate. The few human voices present on the record feel warped and unnatural; the child’s murmur on “MT1 t29r2” sounds monotone and unnervingly distant under the rest of the song’s production. “Give me your hand, my friend, and I will lead you to the land of abundance, joy, and happiness,” a woman assures us, with a suspicious amount of placidity, on “abundance10.” And while this soundbite is buried under sonic dust and other detritus, James proceeds to chop and screw it as the song progresses until the words “joy” and “happiness” are reduced to abstractions, more ominous than comforting. The overall effect is a bit trite, but it’s the captivating instrumentation here that redeems the track.

While James is here less austere than on Cheetah EP and less eccentric than on landmark release Richard D. James Album, Collapse nevertheless proves to be a serviceable Aphex Twin release at this point in his career. His knack for finding interesting textures and layers hasn’t been compromised nor has his willingness to build off of previous styles in his oeuvre. Collapse is a step away from James’s forays into ambient and jungle of the past, but the Aphex Twin identity still shines through in his inimitable take on IDM. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

  7. Bought and downloaded the wavs, listened twice now... um... Abundance is okay, it has some through line, some center, some narrative. T69 Collapse is decent, the central third is still out of place to my ears.

I swear I'm not being contrarian, but I'm not much feeling this. Maybe just needs time to sink in, I dunno. Much of it sounds like he's just throwing shit at the wall and seeing if anything sticks. Okay for dance tunes or whatever maybe? Some grooves at times but ... I feel like it's missing that Aphex magic. Or I'm just missing it perhaps. Not even digging pthex. All very disjointed and so much of the sounds he's using, it's like a 15 year old just got a new sample pack or something. Just fucking dozens upon dozens of OH KEWL SOUND moments at my ears with no rhyme or reason. Maybe that's the point? If so cool but not my thing I guess.

JUST FIRST IMPRESSIONS DONT LYNCH ME PLEASE I love (some) Aphex I swear.

No worries man. I was in the same camp at first, then I put it on my surround sound system. If you have a good system, stand in the middle of your living quarters, put abundance10edit on your stereogramaphone and turn the dais to 11. You will see spirits.

  8. Consequence of Sound has weighed in

The Lowdown: The latest release from the reclusive and prolific Aphex Twin finds the producer moving away from the more straightforward approach he has been dabbling in on recent work, turning up the heat on his slippery, electronic anthems, bringing them from a simmer to a rolling boil.

The Good: The music on Collapse takes hard turns and shape-shifts with the frequency that we’ve come to expect from James. But his firm hand at the controls is felt just as acutely. Much like the EP’s artwork, there are recognizable signatures at the center of the entropic sound that seems to be coming apart in real time. Often those bits of purchase he allows us as we try to scale his slippery tunes are his own, like the lullaby-like melodies of “MT1 t29r2” or the video game soundtrack-like squiggle that dominates that same song’s first half. Or if you strip away the sharp snare rolls and “sproinging” synth notes on closing track “phtex”, you’ll find a gorgeous ambient track that evokes an ocean at dead calm. Elsewhere, he peels back the curtain even further to reveal samples that will surely be catnip to the many crate diggers in his fan base, like the bit of turntablism and the snippet of The Specials’ live version of “Guns of Navarone” that pop up on “1st 44”.

The Bad: For all the compositional innovation here, James is retreating to his comfort zone with Collapse. Unlike Cheetah, his slowed-down electro EP from last year, this is instantly recognizable as an Aphex Twin work, and none of the tracks completely surprise or shock. It’s strange to mete that complaint out as dozens of would-be producers would likely give their left leg to be able to come up with sounds as forward thinking as James seems to do without breaking a sweat. But considering the creative leaps he has made throughout his long career, I can’t help but wonder when the next ascension will arrive.

The Verdict: Collapse is another entry in a remarkable run of work that Aphex Twin has been releasing since his return from a long and clearly necessary hiatus. It may feel like he is on cruise control a bit, but James’ coasting is any other artist’s magnum opus.

    Essential Tracks: “1st 44”, “MT1 t29r2”, and “abundance10edit [2 R8’s, Fz20m & a 909]”

  9. Watched the latest episode. Pretty deece, but a few convoluted scenarios. A new character looks to be a setup antagonist for Mike. A lame character just to stir up some drama with his character. Come on Kai. You can do better. While Gus's speech to Hector was awesome, you should have nipped shit in the bud dude. We know from Breaking Bad that's how you feel. You're an extremely patient guy. We get it. Shoulda killed him though.
