  1. ^ had the same experience when I was without a computer for half a year. felt pretty good to read more/watch a limited supply of dvds, but I got more disconnected from what was going on in the world

  2. all this talk about utopias is missing the point that the very concept of a utopia implies that the whatever-topia is unattainable

"The word comes from Greek: οὐ ("not") and τόπος ("place") and means "no-place", and strictly describes any non-existent society 'described in considerable detail'. However, in standard usage, the word's meaning has narrowed and now usually describes a non-existent society that is intended to be viewed as considerably better than contemporary society.[5] Eutopia, derived from Greek εὖ ("good" or "well") and τόπος ("place"), means "good place", and is strictly speaking the correct term to describe a positive utopia. In English, eutopia and utopia are homophonous, which may have given rise to the change in meaning." (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utopia)

  3. guess i don't know enough about him to call him just that. sloppy wording i suppose. what i'm trying to say is romanticising whatever TV used to be is a meme. get with the times, current year, etc. etc.. at the same time i do agree with him--he's got a good case. hence the ambivalence

  4. Wrong director mate.

I love The Blob remake, got some great fire effects.

lol read malick instead of gilliam for some reason. terry n terrence, what's the difference. still disagree either way. brazil is a good one. the fisher king, too.

re the fire effects that meteorite/satellite crash in the beginning was pretty lackluster. enjoyed the rest though

  5. Gilliam is the most overrated director in the world. Also ripley isn’t a military officer.

saw badlands (1973) the other day and i disagree. tree of life was horrid though

in other news i saw these two yesterday:

gotta say i reckon neither whoever wrote the tagline for carrie nor the designer of the the blob's poster watched the movies

  6. I had a bunch of his books, all picked up from charity shops. Never got around to reading them and I think I've lost them now d'oh

i genuinely liked this book. got this impression kundera genuinely tried to write something in the very theme he was theorizing about: variations on repetitions. he proposes some insights about how we laugh at the absurdity of repetition and that we in those repetitions lose sight of what is being repeated, which is literally what happens as the book progresses. it's sweet. was positively surprised

read like 5 of his works in a row a year or two ago and found this in a thrift shop. figured i'd read the book that actually lost him his czech citizenship. funnily enough i didn't really consider the context in which his political criticism was written until now

haven't seen him posted here before so i figured i'd recommend him. especially the unbearable lightness of being
