why. the film is off the rails when it goes too far out of hollywood. they should have just cut the scenes out.

You claim the film takes place almost entirely in an apartment. This is false. One of Lynch's greatest talents is implying a sense of claustrophobia when it's not actually there.

As well, I have no idea what "too far out of Hollywood" means. To be pedantic, part of Mulholland Drive (including what's shown in the opening credits) is actually in Hollywood. As well the idea of Mulholland Drive being geographically boring is equally baffling to me. It's one of the coolest scenic routes in L.A. and a lot of people do idiotic racing on it so boring is a bad descriptor. As far as the movie, I quite like how it shifts. The tone is different but the film itself is still a linear trajectory.

well considering the films title is 'mulholland drive' and 'mulholland drive' is the basis of the plot twist im not completely wrong. Its very geographicly boring.

The irony to this quote is almost too good to be true.

It’s a show about the life of Catherine the Great - if Catherine the Great had the personality of a pretentious American teenager. There’s tons of people of all sorts of color running around at the Russian court and because the makers *can* show lewdness they feel they *must* - lots of it. Still, it’s fun.

Really it's just about one part of Catherine the Great's life. Her first marriage to Peter the III. Seeing as the point of the show is a comedy, I thought this was a brilliant choice. That part of her biography is ripe for comedic parody.

With that said, I would love some epic historical biopic/miniseries on Catherine the Great's whole life. And yeah that would need a very different tone.

Oh shit, I worded that very poorly. They were *almost* taken, both survived through surgery. Sorry work multitasking and watmm posting makes for foolish output.

  7. Watched the Dardenne brothers "Young Ahmed" last night. Tend to agree with the critics that the climax is "unearned" compared to their other films. It's beautiful nonetheless (the lead is amazing in his role). The brothers are usually good at adding *just* enough exposition for the viewer to have an emotional engagement with the protagonist(s) and their situation.

This film tries a trick making the main plot itself suspenseful enough where they try to withhold even some basic exposition (background of the cousin and father, to start). Doesn't really work in the context of the Dardennes' style but they've honed their visual style to a point where even their failures are worth seeing.

    Spoiler

This is now the 2nd time the Dardennes' have used non-diegetic music in their films. I found it extremely out of place with The Kid With a Bike. The usage here was fascinating. This time it was Schubert over the end credits after a particularly brutal end-cut (even for the Dardenne brothers). IMO, the musical selection implies a somewhat dark fate. That's a first for a Dardenne brothers movie and this was an odd (and questionable) film to make that choice.

Aneurysms are the worst.  So random.  A guy I used to be friends with was at the gym exercising with his friend, when suddenly his friend collapsed and died right in front of him.  Aneurysm.  Dude was in his early 20s.  Fuck that shit.

My family is very lucky. Both my father and sister were almost taken by brain Aneurysms, and they aren't blood-related. I went though a period of being super paranoid about this myself and got a lot of tests done to confirm I'm safe.

Wasp Network. Good director, great cast. Enjoyable until it lost its way and fizzled out.

If you haven't already, check out Carlos. Same director/star in a miniseries about Carlos the Jackal. It's excellent.

    Amazing music.

2nd this. I wasn't a huge fan of the film itself but the soundtrack is mandatory.

I have lost my fucking mind on the Barnes & Noble 50% off Criterion sale. Giving the 4K restoration to Richard III tonight. I love the look of VistaVision (Olivier's not too shabby either).

Will take a look at that one. I always appreciated the independent docs on mental illness and other stigmatized subjects. I seen one from the 70's I believe called Madness and Medicine. quite graphic yet justified during those days.

While not a documentary, you may appreciate the Bruno Dumont film "Camille Claudel 1915"

I don't know why it would be impressive, either. Being destructive is incredibly easy, even Schlitze can do it.

It was impressive in the way it pointlessly derailed good discussion in this thread. Anti-intellectual bullshit has that power.

I'm afraid I have to agree with Schlitze here. A noobie like Taupe Beats should know his place in the community. His contributions have been shallow and nonsensical and it was only due to our generosity that we accepted him so far. For someone of his calibre he has been imposing on our kindness way too much. Thin ice, my friend, thin ice

Oh how much you're leaving out with that description...

    1. This was the only appearance of the Aktionist movement in a studio film. The extended setpiece with flour/etc (your spoiler) was technically an "Aktion" that Makavejev filmed. Otto Muehl (a horrific person) is the bald guy in that sequence. It is interesting to note how Makavejev achieves this bizarre calm in a specific moment.

    2. Makavejev claims he turned down directing Apocalypse Now to make this.

    3. What Makavejev managed to get away with filming for this is impressive (set pieces at the Eiffel Tower, Amsterdam Canals).

    4. The final scene in the boat is one of the creepiest things I've ever seen in any film.

Oddly, this is likely Makavejev's worst film. It's certainly fascinating though if you have the stomach for it. The gold penis gag gives me a chuckle every time.
