He said everything that’s bad about the album but so little about what’s good! My grandmother could say what’s bad about it very easily!

another thing that this kid doesn’t understand is that a great artist never asks himself “what should he do” but instead “what shouldn’t he do” and that’s what’s ae all about regarding their release. Sign is just something that they haven’t really released so far and at the same time something they enjoy themselves.

There is this recurring complaint the music on SIGN would be "simplistic". Compared to what? And what's wrong about simplicity? Simplicity can be an artistic choice.

Anyhow, the tracks on SIGN are rhythmically and/or contrapuctal very complex (people seem to forget, that even tracks without drums can be rhythmically complex). There is  key sentence in the Times interview:

I’ve done a lot of work to disguise the amount of stuff there is in there.

That's the "simplicity" of SIGN. It's masterfully disguised complexity. And that is a whole new artistic level for Autechre.
Music historians praise Mozart for doing the same: disguising very complex musical processes to seem simple.

Also the streaming capabilities etc that bleepstore doesn’t have. The bleepstore is kinda redundant now then since we could just... buy this stuff off of regular bleep.com?

AE_LIVE was exclusive for the bleepstore for a long time, and some of the merch too. AE_LIVE 14-15 is now available on regular bleep, but 16-18 still isn't. And there are the Warp Tapes too...

Ae still makes better use of the own bleepstore, as most the other warp artists ('Pusher, Plaid). Seefeel has a few exclusives on his bleepstore too.

Well, you will go through a lot of disappointment, pain, self lying, fanboyism. You may even like it. But let's be honest. Confield, Elseq, NTS, this is where they were on the summit.

    Summit Is Gone Now.

I respect your opinion, but let's be honest: I might not share it.

Unfortunately tinnitus also provides “surface noise” for all listening...but usually not if the soft-vinyl variety!

You know what's great to have a tinnitus? Ventolin becomes just a pleasent listening... ?

    Post release report pls thx

Yeah, you have a point. "Disturbing" is not the best choice of word for that, what SIGN is. ?

But joking aside, for me it is kind of a new turn for Autechre. I have always felt a very deep emotional core in their releises, but most of the time it was almost hidden, and under the suface. That is perhaps why their music was often perceived as "cold", with which term I never could agree. But SIGN is undoubtebly their "warmest" record. And that it's divise within the fanbase, seems to show, that there is an element to it, that some of us wasn't prepared for (so in that sense "disturbing" them).

I liked SIGN on the first listen, and now after 5 listening sessions I'm still loving it, and didn't get tired of it. With NTS I didn't had that, last time I heard such an approachable Autechre record, was with Oversteps, and even there the second half of the record is a more challenging experience than by SIGN. But it's still them, and I still feel the same effort and heart in it, what I always loved in their music.

I also think, that it was a very bold move from Sookie and Rory to go in this direction after elseq and NTS, but I can get why. I think somebody here already made the comparison to Confield and Oversteps, how Autechre has always key records to re-set their musical landscape. I agree with that comparison, of course is just a flawed analogy, but there is some truth behind it. It's like the bois love to go to the wall and then re-set the direction and go the next wall. I'm curious where they will lead us, and I'm very much with them in this journey.

    How was that?

    psin AM :

I keep hearing this chord, cannot unhear:

Similar chord progression indeed. The first chord is almost the same, then in psin AM comes an additional chord, and the third chord in psin AM is similar to the scond chord in the BoC track. The last chord is different though.

You could call it an hommage or an accidental similarity. I don't know.

  7. If somebody in future should say, the music of Autechre would be "cold" and/or "inhuman", just show them SIGN. I've always felt this emotional core in all of Ae's work, but it was always coated, hidden - and now it bursts out in it's purity, an I'm just floating with it.

I hate rankings, so I won't say anything like "best", but I love this album very much. And it's quite addictive: I'm almost afraid not to overplaying it.

If the brothers call this their hip hop album, then there may definitely be some truth in them sampling of previous tracks.

I'm gonna roll with that theory for now.

    Yeah, that makes sense.

  9. I really don't like picking "best tracks", because I enjoy them all, but if you put a gun to my head, and I had to choose the "best track of SIGN", I would choose gr4.

The lush polyphony, the intervowing melodylines are just soooo fucking amazing!

But really the whole album is an wonderful experience on its own.

Now first listening to the wavs on my Marantz NA6005/PM6006/Celestion Ditton 22 System.
