  1. Yeah Slate magazine's hot take is predictably passive:

    https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2020/06/albuquerque-new-mexico-statue-protest-armed-militia-group.html

    Quote

Protesters continued to advance on the man, trying to tackle him in the street, before he fell to the ground, got back up and fired shots at one of the advancing protesters.

I mean sure hahah, I guess if you want to leave a _few_ details out there then yes, that sequence of events occured, but...

  2. As long as we're going deep into the arm chair quarterbacking speculation territory:

    * What if the guy running who had just assaulted two police officers and is now fleeing on foot had run to one of the cars in the drive thru and started to assault a bystander and car jack them to escape?

    * What if the guy running had a firearm on him and pulled it?

    * What if...

We can what if this all day.

I liked the part where he talked about his silence doesn’t mean he accepts what’s going on.

I did not like how he ended it. It sounds like a ultimatum and a call to violence if things don’t go the way he wants.

But it’s starting to look like the “rat ta tat tat” is starting anyway. Enjoy it Dave.

  4. Went to my desktop to download the Facebook video but they had already removed it by then. Looks like some civil guard (militia) dude was being chased off by the crowd trying to remove a statue. He pulled out pepper spray as they chased him then they started to mob and attack him. He pulled out a gun and shot about 5 rounds. Everyone ran at that point and one person looked to be down.

  5. I think I've asked this before but is there a way to hide a specific topic in a forum that you don't care to see?

Example: In the Aphex Twin forum I have no interest in seeing the "sauce inquiry" topic so I keep just marking forum as read when I finish reading the other topics. It's annoying though because apparently there are other people in there who really enjoy that, eh... topic... of discussion.

Would be nice to just click a button on that topic and it's gone as far as I can tell.

Explain to me why they put him into handcuffs in the first place.

After having a field sobriety test administered he blew a .108 on the breathalyzer. The legal limit is .08. It's a cop's discretion on whether you are arrested for DUI or not. You can be arrested for DUI even if you don't blow over the limit.

He was being arrested and placed in police custody at that point the cuffs were going on. Next step was probably going to be put into a police car and taken to jail for booking and a night in a cell to sober up.

Cuffs are used to mitigate the risk of a suspect's violent resistance. This suspect was ordered to put his hands behind his back. He knew what was coming and made the choice to resist arrest. He started fighting the officers, struck the officers, wrestled a taser away from one of the officers, discharged the taser into one of the officers, fled, turned and shot the other officer with the taser, then went down when fire was returned.

It's unfortunate it wound up this way. The privilege we have is being able to keep rewinding this video from multiple angles over and over. We get to read deliberative thoughtpieces and view detailed analyses on YouTube. The cops that handle these situations in real life when lives are at stake have to make these decisions in the moment.

I could also feed into this and armchair quarterback the play by play on whether this was a justified homicide but that's not up for me to decide. The jury will sort this out.

What I do know is that I still want drunk drivers arrested and I still want cops to pursue suspects that flee.

  7. Thanks for keeping the ship running! I'm familiar with the bowels of app infrastructure, server, network, database and all that so I feel your pain. Been dragged kicking and screaming into the cloud/Kubernetes world in the past year and the more things change the more they stay the same.

I picked up this really mad lesbian conversation, saying goodbye for half an hour.

I'd like to hear mad lesbians saying goodbye for half an hour.

    "WELL, GOODBYE!"

    "HA! GOODBYE TO YOU TOO!"

*** half an hour later ***

  9. I assume you are agreeing with AOC’s take on the term “human capital stock”:

Let’s also not ignore the racial history of this terminology, which has roots in slavery.

Is there a citation somewhere that ties this term to “racial history” as she posits? I Googled the term, scanned a Harvard publication, checked a few articles etc but came up empty.

  10. Brazil is getting lit up now. What was that conspiracy theory screen cap from 4chan about? It was in this thread early on, like early March. Was from someone who supposedly posted in January about how it would move from China to Italy then really have a breakout in Brazil and mutate in their bat population then it would be off to the races. I read it as wild eyed conspiracy theory at the time but who knows now, it's might play out like that.
