Hi Brian.
-
This was the first thing that came to mind for me too!
-
Especially "Baghdad" and "Blood from Zion"... over and over.
-
Some dope shit up in here dudes.
-
Loved ATR but they should prob be left in the past... new single didn't do anything for me, and it's SEVEN MINUTES LONG. Good grief. ATR aren't the sort of band who can do that well!

Yeah. Pretty lame.

ATR devotees will also recall a May Day protest at the Berlin Wall back in 1999 that got the band arrested for inciting a riot, and they did so with the help of some specifically aggravating frequencies. Their new iPhone app has been delayed by the German iTunes Store because it contains those same noises in a feature called "Riotsounds Produce Riots" which includes "very low sub basses, square waves, noise sounds which trigger hysteria and panic within the audience." -

The vast majority of producers were also DJs.
If you like dark, Technical Itch is where the buck stops. He is the best.
If anyone knows if he ever cut a mix-tape, I would gladly blow you for a lead... but I doubt he ever did.
not a mix-tape, but more like an official 2cd-mix

Thanks a lot man. You're hitting the vein for what I'm seeking right now, and have been seeking, for some time.
I've heard of Metalheadz because Burial did a remix of a, I think, drum & bass group called Commix, and it was getting put out on that label.
I will definitely look into the labels; are you able to rattle off a quick list of good producers at the time, just to give me another place to start?
Thanks for responding, I appreciate it.
P.S. For your own interests' sake, have you ever listened to The Field?
Glad I could help!
I haven't heard The Field. I will try to check them out.
There are so many great rave-era producers. I'll try to name a few of my faves:
Tech Itch (obviously)
DJ Hype
DJ Zinc / Dope Skillz
Marvelous Cain
Johnny Jungle
The Dream Team
Aphrodite
Gang Related & Mask
Krome & Time
DJ SS
DJ Ascend
SHY FX
Souljah
Elementz of Noize
Danny Breaks
Here is a classic hardstep/darkstep mix by DJ 3D (Chicago). He actually has a few of his own track on this one:
Check out Side B first...DJ 3D Jungle Book 1

^ If someone could answer those questions it would be great, as I'm truly interested...
Also, in terms of dark music, this is the kind of thing that comes to mind, even though it's modern (or recently created):
and this...
But I am open to anyone's opinion or perception of darkness, and if you can lead me, please lead on...
Like I said, if you like dark, Technical Itch is where the buck stops.

The "newer" shit is infinitely darker.
There is so much more. He is the king of drums...

jefferoo, thank you. I have been looking for this kind of thing, without knowing I was looking for it, from the time I first heard this kind of music.
Are these tapes put out by DJs who are actually producing the songs, or are they just compiling them? In either case, does anyone know what kind of equipment they were using during these time periods?
Lastly...jefferoo, or anyone, from any of the sites...does anyone know of some of the darker albums/mixes...it can be house, jungle, trance, whatever, regardless of the genre...
Just to let you in on a little secret...
These mix-tapes were all made by rave DJs.
The tapes were almost entirely made using 2 turntables, a mixer and a shitload of dope 12"s.
That's about it really.
I used to go to a lot of raves and see these DJs spin their shit. Sometimes they would put their own records in the mix. Sometimes, they would get special test-presses or dub-plates from well known producers and either drop them at the raves or throw those on the tapes.
As far as what the producers used to produce the tracks: software, midi, samplers and synths. They had all of that in the 90s, it was just much more basic than it is now.
The tapes were a big part of the rave culture. I collected a lot of these at the raves. Often times, you would go to a rave and there would be a table set up with a fuck-load of mix-tapes sorted by genre and you would just buy the ones from the DJs you knew and liked.
Gone are the days...
If you really want to find out more, start by researching some of the record labels. Most of this mid-90s shit was produced in the UK.
The best labels, in my opinion, are:
Suburban Base
Dope Dragon
Joker
Ganja
Congo Natty
Moving Shadow
V Classics
Hard Leaders
Promo
Fresh Kutt
Metalheadz
Some labels like Hard Leaders, Metalheadz and Moving Shadow had darker stuff but it all varied from label to label, artist to artist and track to track. There are literally countless labels from this time period that put out quality shit. You are in for an exciting hunt.
The vast majority of producers were also DJs.

Just saw them for my 4th time tonight. Epic as usual.

MGMT - Congratulations
I'm thoroughly obsessed with this album.
I can't stop listening to it in it's entirety on repeat.
I may pe-order the vinyl. Love it!
current favotrite song: "Someone's Missing"
it is 2:30 of bliss. Reminds me of a psychedelic Jackson 5.

That picture of Richard running down the stairs is the best thing ever.
it's a strangely compelling image.
to me it has always looked like the ceiling is the floor.
wow, i really have a lot to say about this album, but i can hardly get it all out in words. a lot of this album sounds so adrenaline charged and adventurous, like it was meant to be played on a long journey
when I was in high school (about 14 years ago) this was always on in my minivan. It makes me think of intentionally trying to drive off into nowhere until I got lost.
Definitely my favorite AFX LP.
and for the record...
bike pump is the shit.

i rarely really lol on the internet, this is fantastic.
You must be doing it wrong.

I'm currently listening to side B of Phantom 45's Think Twice. Sraight-rollin 94-95 jump-up.
It's amazing how good a mix can be.
-
For future reference...
Let's not let this thread fill up with recent mixes of old skool shit.
Let's try to "keep it real" if we can.
Thanks though!

Thanks all!
Seriously, every one of you fucks needs to download that Curious? "Reminiscence..." from the Golden Era site and the Mystical Influence "Syndicated" tape from the Toronto Archive.
Those 2 are the best, imo.
I'm interested in tracking down some old acid, early hardcore, gabber and maybe some booty-house mixes on mp3. If anyone has any leads, post em.
-
I remember you posting that Jungle link in the Drum N Bass thread. Still need to grab some. Any tapes in particular you recommend from there? I'd love to bounce some down to some actual tapes just for fun.
Golden Era Jungle (in order of importance)
Curious ? - Reminiscence of a Rude Boy
Dr Groo - Agent Orange
Phantom 45 - Think Twice
DJ 3D - The Jungle Book
DJ 3D - Urban Jungle
DJ 3D & Snuggles - Chicago Darksteppers
(f you don't see the title, click on the DJ name and scroll to the bottom where it says "*** Click here for more mixes from ________ ***")

Definitely a lost part of the culture.
I was a collector of jungle tapes back in the day.
I know some people have ripped a bunch of the old tapes to MP3 and uploaded them.
Anyone out there have any any links to good spots to download MP3 versions of old rave-era mix tapes?
Here are 2 spots I know of...

Dungen, ftw...

Ghosts
in General Banter
Posted
I love that half of the encounters on this thread involve using drugs. That should be a hint.
My whole life, I've had dreams about ghosts. I still do.
Most of the dreams take place in the old house I grew up in and moved out of when I was 12. The majority of those have something to do with the tool room in the back of the basement. When I was young, it always felt like something was in there. It had a very heavy door that we kept locked and if I remember correctly I think it also had a small window.
Once, when I was 10 or 11, I was practicing my drums in the basement. I was the only one home. Out of the corner of my eye, I swear that I saw something move quickly from one end of the basement to the other and into the tool room. The was a loud noise like a door slamming and I ran the fuck upstairs and shut the door behind me. After that, I didn't go back downstairs for weeks. When I started going back down, I would yell things like "I'm not afraid of you" etc.
The dreams I have about that basement are too terrifying to put into words.
