In all seriousness though, I hope all the fighters in Kyiv can continue to hold the line. Also I wonder if there's a way to cripple Moscow's nuclear capabilities via cyber assault, although I'm not sure how antiquated their launch systems are.

Some people have questioned whether or not the systems that control Russia's nuclear weapons would even fully function if they were to want to launch them (due to neglect, lack of funding, etc.).

  2. I guess I'm in the (old fart) minority in that I've never had a spotify account.  Sure I use other services and recommendations to find stuff I may like and If I find anything I really like, I buy it (usually physical or digital) and add it to a Plex server that I have running on a Raspberry Pi that lets me listen from anywhere.  It was kind of a pain to set up at first, making sure everything was tagged correctly, but now it's a breeze to add new stuff.

how the average non-english speaking Russian citizen responds is what we're waiting to find out here. how long will they continue to buy the BS propaganda from RT/channel 1 that this is all just a peacekeeping mission? they are the ones that the sanctions are going to do a number on. will it be enough to snap them out of the Putin love fest, and realize he's just the same ol same ol as the commie dudes from back in the USSR days? if the country slowly realizes what he's really up to, then I can't see him sticking around to explain his way out of this to them. he'll probably end up exiled in some golden mansion, that is if he can dodge a bullet coming from someone on his team.

I dunno, there are probably more people in Russia who back Putin than you think, and it probably runs a lot along generation lines.  My friend who is from Belarus, he said that his dad is still very pro-Putin and even now denying that what's going on right now is an actual "war", or aggression from Russia.  He said it's because his dad grew up in the days when it was the "mighty" USSR, and he shares the desire to see those days again (maybe subconsciously or consciously, not sure), not only when the USSR was "stronger", but when they had strong leaders who would stand up to the rest of the world.  Kind of a messed up view, but I think it's completely understandable considering the circumstances.

And I don't buy that Putin is crazy or whatever. He's out of touch but the russians have plenty of ways of getting rid of him if he's actually crazy.

I also don't think he's crazy, but there are reports that he's become increasingly isolated over the past few years, surrounding himself with fewer and fewer aides and those that are there are just yes-men.  That tends to lead to him becoming out of touch like you said, and could be one reason he seemed to have underestimated the Ukrainian response.  But this increased isolation can also lead to some increasing mental instability as he's continually operating with the world view he has constructed in his mind and if he's only surrounded by yes-men, then there's nobody to give him correct info and bring him down to reality.

Operating like this can lead to a downward spiral of increasing loss of touch with reality.  He's definitely a smart and hard mofo, so there's no predicting with any certainty where this will go.

Secretly, I hope we'd have a poster from Russia with an interesting perspective though. Although it would be better for such a person to remain silent, I'm sure.

My labmate and coworker is from Belarus, and he has an interesting perspective.  Totally echo the comments about Putin installing a puppet regime; this is already what exists in Belarus.  My friend is afraid to go back and visit his family because he witnessed some of his old friends who had spent time in the US with him arrested and thrown in jail when they returned to Belarus for a visit.  Apparently they were quite anti-Lukashenko on social media while in the US.

The majority of the public in Europe have a different reaction to someone using Dr.

That's exactly my point, everyone has different expectations of what that term means, and that can vary from region to region. I didn't say I was on one side or the other, but you seemed to take my comments as being on one side.

  7. Alongside the dictionary definitions of what "doctor" really means, you have to consider how the majority of the public will perceive it and if its usage is intended to influence that perception.  Like the never-ending argument of how some users of Tesla's "autopilot" autonomous driving system sometimes mistakenly think that they can fall asleep at the wheel or watch movies while the car is driving because, hey, it's on autopilot!  Meanwhile Tesla defenders are quick to point out that in airplanes, autopilot is not a strictly autonomous system and often requires input from the pilots, but does the majority of the public really know that?  And do you think Tesla considered the responsibility they may bear by calling their system "autopilot" while neglecting to have any robust driver monitoring systems vs. the marketing and sales cache that the term "autopilot" imparts?

FWIW I am a Dr. (of Chemical Engineering) and I never introduce myself as Dr. or have people call me that because they invariably think that I'm a medical doctor.

Efrim Manuel Menuck discusses the recent, unauthorized release of All Lights Fucked on the Hairy Amp Drooling, which was a cassette he released in 1994 and attributed to Godspeed You! Black Emperor, the complete history of the contents of this tape, plans for its (now) official release, other future plans, and more!

Haven't listened to the podcast yet, but will soon.

The 16 year old Aussie is brilliant

That is definitely in part due to his age, the willingness to go balls to the wall for tricks.

After he was done with his runs, Shaun White said something like, "I'll never again have to stand at the top of the halfpipe and wonder if this is the time I end up really hurting myself.". That's probably a thought that anyone under 25 wouldn't have.

Deuterium is freely available in seawater

Not sure how "freely available" the process is for extracting deuterium from seawater.  Some googling says it's a proven process; I'm guessing it's not energy efficient but you surely get that back on the back end since you only need a tiny amount to fuse to create a huge amount of energy.

For christ sakes just go fuck off to your island and do drugs + live like a king like a sane person would. Rich people are so weird. You won the game. Fuck off and go enjoy the life all of us are missing out on while trying to stay financially afloat. Cunts.

He won the game BECAUSE he is the type of dude who won't just quit and go off to his island to relax.  That's how you win almost any game, work hard enough so that you won't be able to enjoy it when it's over, because everyone else won't be willing to give up that much.

I find America completely broken and insane. I wish I was some genius computer programmer and could work from anywhere. Id be out of here in a heartbeat

It's still one of the best places in the world to earn your income due to the relatively low taxes (as long as you're healthy!).  I'm 15 years away from retirement but I sure have been thinking a lot about where I would want to go to spend what will hopefully be a long and relaxing retirement.

  14. It's almost 10:00 and time for the daily tea break.  I'm a creature of habit and this 10:00 tea break has carried over since 2007 when I spent 4 months in India, and I celebrate by having a cardamom chai tea:

And at this snack break I also eat half a bag of these spicy Szechuan peanuts:
