when I heard about that Russian shit. Paying militants to execute US soldiers? That is beyond the pale.

Not hearing about it as an excuse from the commander in chief doesn't hold water.

Basically an act of war he doesn't hear about

Their defense is that they weren't sure how credible the intel was, which I can understand.  I wouldn't want half-baked intel this inflammatory on the president's desk unless I was sure it was legit.

NYT seems to have dug into it a bit but they could've just published it to hurt big T.  With something this serious, I would want to know whether or not it's credible before I form an opinion.

    Ah, yes, you're right.

So I looked it up and:

    - Lambiek / Lambic is the spontaneously fermented base beer.

    - Geuze is a mix of both old and new lambiek.

    - And Faro, like you say, is lambiek with brown sugar.

If you're interested in this stuff, there's also "Kriek", meaning "Cherry" beer: geuze (or lambiek) with tart cherries. Not all of the available varieties are good. Most are too sweet - but a well made one is not. Lindemans makes a very good one, IIRC.

My favorite is "Oude (old) Geuze" by Boon, btw. Expensive, not always easy to find, but very, very good.

Yeah I'm familiar with kriek, especially because I love cherries.  My wife loves Kasteel Rouge, but I think it's a little too sweet for my taste.  Lindemann's does make a great kriek, I love their "Oude Kriek Cuvée René".

I do love the oude gueze from Boon.  I actually have a bottle of "Boon Oude Geuze Mariage Parfait" in my cellar that has been waiting for the right occasion.  Lindemann's "Oude Gueuze Cuvée René" is my go-to and I think is perhaps the best quality to price ratio that I've found from the selections that are available around here.

Have you tried Hanssens Artisanaal Oude Geuze?  It's pretty hardcore, not for the faint of heart, but still decent and more on the sharp / sour / funky side.  IIRC, Hanssens buys the leftovers from other lambic breweries like Lindemanns and lets it sit and makes other lambics and guezes out of it.  Some of their other offerings are even more sour and funky, too much so to my taste.  I tried the Oudbeitje and almost vomited, I couldn't finish it.  Unfortunately, I bought two bottles, so one has been sitting in my cellar for 2 years.  I'm hoping it mellows out, but it's got a loooonnngg way to go.  It's funny to read some of the reviews of this lambic.

Isn’t Faro aged lambic or something? Or is that Geuze? Anyway, they’re all related - and all from the same area.

    Also +1 for Orval

The Faro is a lambic with brown sugar added I think, supposedly it was a more traditional style in the past, but it's definitely separate from a gueze.  Just making a suggestion that people who like geuze will probably also like lambic and they should try this relatively rare type of lambic.

Geuze boon and Orval are some of the best beers out there, get that shit at any cost

Hell yes, couldn't agree more.  Just before the lockdown I went to my local beer store and was pissed that they were out of Orval; I was hoping to stock up.  Went back recently and they had some, but it is very fresh and I need to let it age for a bit in my basement to mature.  It's so hard to resist cracking one open.

Regarding geuze, I think it's my favorite style if I had to pick one.  Similar in style, I recommend Lindemann's Faro lambic, if anyone has yet to try it.

"Conservative" is becoming a meaningless term. These people aren't even reactionary, they are downright nihilistic.

Even the more traditional conservative behaviors I am starting to see as serving one's self more than others.

Don't get me wrong, we need a balance of ideologies to have a healthy society, but let's start calling it what it is.

In the future, every time someone brings up some tragic event with a large death toll and pretends to care, I'ma ask them if they wore a mask during the epidemic. Fucking no one is wearing a mask it seems. Every fifth person I pass by here in Texas has a mask on. Mostly elderly people. Now it didn't hit my area as hard as most areas, but that could change at any moment considering we've got a long time left.

I was listening to a worker in the convenience store bitching about it earlier today. Like, I don't understand why it's such a big deal to some people to just wear a mask in public for a few months. Idiots. Man this whole thing puts me in a bad mood. The broken logic of conservatives man. They have an inability to understand basic statistics or something. They think just because it isn't THAT BAD here, must mean the whole thing is over-blown. Then they just make up their own "facts" about the virus, then proceed to believe it due to their distrustful nature of science... okay I'm done ranting. Preaching to the choir anyway so I'm basically just venting.

Most people in NJ are still wearing masks everywhere.  It's all the fuckwads from the spiking red states coming up here that I'm worried about.

Regarding the broken logic of conservatives, I'm starting to see "conservatives" and "liberals", or republicans and democrats in a different way, where it all boils down to if you care for others more than yourself.  Conservatives care for themselves more than others and liberals care for others more than themselves.  Only a selfish mindset would cause someone to refuse to wear a mask. Their argument is always, "if I get it, I get it, big deal."  But it's not about you, is it, asshole?  It's about stopping the spread so that someone less healthy than you can keep living.  It's probably an oversimplification, but I'm starting to see all conservative behavior as just motivated by selfishness.

Both the UK and the US responded terribly to this, and it shows in the numbers, parts of the US were lucky, for now, but it's pretty likely the rest of the country will get hit much harder in a 2nd wave if it happens (and it probably will).

Plus, because of the size and heterogeneity of the US, some regions will only be hitting their first wave at the same time others hit the second wave.  The lagging states are re-opening because they see the states that are over the hump of the first wave reopening, but they themselves aren't even through their first wave yet.

edit:  re: calculating the overall European death rate, just multiply each death rate by each country's total population to give you the total deaths per country, add all those number together to get total deaths in Europe, then divide that number by millions of people in Europe to get the deaths per million.

  9. Not sure about your specific kind of grass, but if you need to re-seed with something else I know it's best to seed in the fall so that the grass can develop roots for as long as possible before the summer heat kills it.  Sounds like you live in a hotter climate, so your local gardening shops may have some better advice.

  10. Agreed, I don't see any agency behind it at all, just saying that the accidental lab release scenario seems completely plausible to me, as does the natural release scenario.

Or what if, you know, there's wet markets in crazy crowded mega cities with all sorts of different wild animals shitting on top of each other so viruses from tons of different places can mingle in all sorts of different and interesting new ways and people have been warning for decades that this is a disaster waiting to happen

... and then a disaster nearly did happen in 2003 but at that particular instance the mutated virus could only spread when symptoms had appeared so it was reasonably easy to keep in check

... and then a disaster nearly did happen again in 2012 but again the virus it concerned did not spread if you didn't have symptoms so it was still sort of ok

... and then in 2019 it happens again

Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity

The virus escaping the lab can easily be attributed to stupidity and not malice.  They were researching several coronaviruses with the goal of creating vaccines, no malice there, and it could've escaped accidentally due to lax lab practices or just because it's obviously really fucking contagious.  To me, that scenario seems just as likely due to stupidity.

It's all moot anyway because we'll probably never know the origin.  I think I read somewhere that they still haven't pinpointed the source of the last SARS outbreak?
