Corporations should pay much more tax than they do in the US, and the tax loopholes that exist need to be eliminated. The rich actually pay an ok share on their income (marginal taxes could be higher), but long -term capital gains taxes need to be raised. Also, offshoring practices and other tax avoidance strategies need to be eliminated.

Even when companies are allowed to "fail" and declare bankruptcy, they look to eliminate or reduce their largest financial liabilities which are often pensions and health care benefits for retirees.  My father was planning to retire around 2010, but his company declared bankruptcy a few years before and as a result, they eliminated the pension and health care for retirees.  The gov't picked up the pension plan at a reduced rate, something like 60% (I guess there is some law that requires this to happen), but he had to continue working for another 7 years to save up enough money to help pay for health care after he retired while the executives were given nice packages for steering the company through bankruptcy.

Fast forward to 2018 and my dad finally retires.  He has 6 months to enjoy retirement before he is diagnosed with a serious lung issue that could potentially shorten his life significantly.

Watching this happen to him has made my attitude toward my employer to be very antagonistic.  I scoff every time they say how much they value their employees and how we're their most valuable asset.  I'm not going to ever go the extra mile for them unless I am compensated, and I am saving like crazy to retire as early as I can.

Ok maybe Randomsummer's post above answers my question but I still wanted to see what others thought too - did you all have a ton of Lego kits as a kid?

I think we had a few, but we mainly had a huge bucket of just blocks and we had to build our own stuff out of them. Maybe I'm just getting old but it feels like the "kids these days" only get kits but don't play a ton with them. I need to know if I'm wrong - LOL. Thoughts?

I had both, I had a ton of sets and also a big wooden box of miscellaneous blocks to play with.  A lot of the pieces in the misc. box were of old sets that I had taken apart probably because of lack of storage space.  You don't have a lot of display space when you're 10, lol.

A lot of my early sets were town / space sets, then I moved to primarily Technic as I got older.

  3. That dude making his own 3-D printed giant Lego stuff must be ridiculously independently wealthy.

I made the Fiat 500 during the first week of quarantine.  Thinking of ripping down the Rube Goldberg contraption I posted earlier and building another one in its place.

AND... I was afraid something like this would happen...

Wisconsin Supreme Court blocks order by governor to stop Tuesday’s elections in state’s latest whipsaw

These fucking maniacs are unbelievable. The State Supreme Court went ahead and overturned the executive action and are ordering that tomorrow's election proceed, despite rising covid numbers, a big outbreak in Milwaukee and basically they whole state being given the ultimatum of either risking their fucking lives or doing their constitutionally mandated duty.

I honestly cannot comprehend these fucking psychopaths. Complete monsters.

Maybe people who inevitably get sick from being around others while voting will sue the state supreme court justices.  They'd have to prove that they got sick from voting, though...

Trump just made the best decision he's ever made while in his presidency. That's not to say it's a good one, but it isn't a horrible one either.

Yeah, and US markets reacting positively to his decision which will hopefully signal to him that doing best by his people and not what he thinks is best by the economy will be best for everyone in the long run.

Looking at that flight map, I'm starting to think the US gov maybe wants to thin out their aging population?  That's easier for me to wrap my head around than the amount of stupidity required to keep that many flights in operation at a time like this.

I heard somewhere (can't remember where) that a lot of airlines are just flying ghost flights because they have to keep a certain schedule of arrivals / departures at airports to avoid fees due to contract obligations or something like that.  It's crazy that their contracts make it so that it becomes cheaper to fly empty airplanes around than just leave them on the ground and pay the fees.

Edit:  Also heard somewhere that they're re-purposing some of these would-be commercial flights to cargo.

Haven't read the article, but I'm fairly sure the typical Trump voters haven't really felt the impact yet and consider this a hoax and a load of fake news. This might still be the case in a couple of weeks time. But if US goes the same route Italy has already taken (which it does look like, imo), I expect those ratings to drop. And pretty hard. Might be a month until you see that in the actual polls. Since there's also a delay in those outcomes.

Exactly.  The places where the virus has hit hard so far (Northeast, west coast) are generally pretty blue.  We'l see what happens once the traditionally red states become severely affected.

It's ironic that in the unlikely scenario that the measures being taken in the worst affected areas have an effect in slowing the spread, the effect will have been very disproportionate across blue / red states, with red states being much less affected and thinking that Trump's strategy was the reason they got off lightly.

  8. Was watching the NJ governor's address this afternoon and some fuckwad gun lobbyist asked why they decided to deem gun stores non-essential (thereby temporarily closing them), saying that the people have a right to buy guns to defend themselves at a time like this.  The gov couldn't comment because apparently this dude's group sued the state over their decision to close the gun stores along with almost everything else.  WTF is wrong with these people?

Human viruses don't exist in nature outside of a human Host. They are endogenous, produced by our own body as part of the wrecking crew that is responsible for fighting off disease and illness. Same concept with fevers and lack of appetite when you're sick.

Scientist have theories on where exogenous viruses come from but no one knows for sure. One theory is that they come from us.

It's official my State OHIO has shut down all non-essential businesses and is mandating everyone "Stay At Home".  Not sure if this will affect me though as i'm in the concrete industry and i think construction is considered essential.

I'm from Ohio and my family there says that they're impressed by how the gov. is handling it.

NJ gov. declared that everyone stay home as of last night at 9 pm.  "Essential" businesses are staying open, but it's unclear how that applies to my job (R&D at a healthcare company).

if you were to release this on purpose to destabilize other nations you'd make a vaccine first for your own people. Then release it.

No, just for the "important" ones among your own people.

  12. I'm at work today; we're supposed to work from home and come in only to support business-critical projects.  They've implemented a schedule so that only a certain number of people are allowed on the site at any given time.  I came in today to get enough data to work from home for a while.

Even though there's hardly anyone here, I'm still turning off the lights in the lab and pissing in the sink because I don't want to use one of the communal restrooms.  :emotawesomepm9:
