  1. You know what's kinda crazy: I was kicking around all the horseshoe crab molts on the Jersey shore and it's strange how that crab leaves itself behind in a permanent fashion whereas all of our "molts" are superimposed upon each other much like a hologram in the brain. The title track of this album is such a throwback to when those diabolical Germans totally reimagined trance in the mid-90s. I had the thought that 'man, 15 year old me would have shit over this', which was peak trance for me (Ralf Hildenbeutel, A.C. Boutsen, Steffen Britzke, Roman Flugel, etc). I immediately realized that that kid never went anywhere. He's right here getting off big time to what a perfect track this is.

Didn't think much of the video. Thought the Aphexian creature (is it a wolf? a armadillo? a trilobite? a mutant badger?)  was real cool and funny in a twisted way. But I felt I was looking at a load of repeated square shit. For far too long. But it don't matter. The music is what matters. And it's great.

A tardigrade. It was an unpleasant flashback to my invertebrate zoology course from Fall 1998 when I saw the video but they're cool fellers. They're also known as moss piglets or water bears and can survive space. I don't know if it's Weirdcore or Richard giving the direction but it was fitting that the Tardijames was unveiled in the cosmic section.

Is it my ears/headphones going wonky or is there some clipping/saturation near the end of the title track (from around 3:50 till around 4:20 - more noticeable on the 'Aphex Mastered' version (track 5)) ? Perhaps it's just resonating with my headphone .... whateveryoucallit ... speakers ?

3:20 feels like a sudden jump in loudness. By the time 3:50 hits, that additional reedy synth playing along with the root notes really makes a boozy wall of sound due to all the similar frequencies. These tunes are in some of the most capable hands around so I see it as a stylistic choice but it's unusual tbh.

That bassline is so huge. It's damn near 808 kicks tuned to a melody so it will be the belle of the frequency ball on sheer girth alone. I'm not trying to set up a competition or "who wore it better" but I loved when Special Request kept everything in the upper frequencies, well-behaved and minimal in order to let this fuckin' beast of a bassline growl around. Choon. So is "Blackbox". Not a contest lol.

this is pretty boring, nice enough, but can't see myself listening that often

I hate feeling this way as I'm among the hardest RDJ dickriders. It's actually kinda dampening my Friday lol. I'm gonna give it the weekend to see if any bonding emerges.

Love on a Real Train is probably my favorite Tangerine Dream track

So, I've come to hypothesize that this track has ascended into a trope-like or archetypal status. I feel like it has seeped into so many corners of music. The Global Communication 8:07 is definitely the most obvious but I feel like The Smiths definitely had a Tangerine Dream one night in '88 and even let "train" slip into the title.

Most recently, our friend BT slipped onto a train as well

Obviously, we've been living with repeated arpeggiated sequences for the better part of a century and it's not like it's direct plagiarism going on. It's something like the pentatonic solo in rock/metal. Tangerine Dream just hit on a whole universe that you can dip into from an arrangement perspective and it's guaranteed to slap.

  6. Isn't this something of a flub on Warp's part? I can remember the old days when new releases would arrive but they would be in a security taped box with "do not open until Tuesday" warnings. How are these in record stores 8-9 days early?

  7. The methodology here is very shaky but there had to be someway to normalize the data against inflation. I took your EUR values, brought them over to current USD and made use of the U.S. CPI consumer inflation calculator to adjust for the month and year of the show. I omitted Machester Warehouse because, for a mere 28 EU credits, you got all that *and* Ae so fuck you and congratulations. I wanted to hone in on a true indAex across time.

The inflation-adjusted values were then brought back to EUR with the caveat that the EUR has not inflated identically to the USD and, anyway, some prices were in Irish Spudcoin brought over into EUR so the underpinnings are very loose. It's not just your imagination. The cumulative inflAetion is 236.4% using the following calculation [(2023 value)-(1995 value)] / (1995 value) * 100.

We seemed to have enjoyed a relatively flat to slightly decreasing rate across 2000-2014 but, alas, the music of the future commands the prices of the future as well. I only hope the fellas are capturing as much of the gains as they can.

  8. I think this is pretty fun because, while these festival tracks are not flashbangs in your face, they're really effective floor tools that you can say "oh yeah, heard that" after the show. One of the stilson tracks played for just a bit in Houston and I can remember thinking: "that's a heater right there". It was fun to hear it when I got home. I'm wrong if these didn't drop in the actual show in Barcelona.

Started the 3rd season of Righteous Gemstones and even though I enjoyed the first two seasons, I’m not sure I care about what happens from here on out.

Admittedly, I was in something of a mood when I started it last Sunday but I just had this total sensation of not being up for it. Some hilarious comedy has come out of this show though--I'll take another look I'm sure.

  10. I was feeling just OK with the proceedings but I really got clinched after 2:42 when he finishes the bassline with that big ass Dsharp instead of the Fsharp.

It rounds it out into a super depressing "boom" that kinda fills your head on headphones. It made me feel very morose, which is hilarious because it's like "fuck yeah new Aphex!!" hype but it's not really a feel-good hit of the summer or anything lol.

It will probably be a bangin EP. "Abundance Jam" is still my most played song ever on my phone's internal SD card 5 years on so I have high hopes.

there was a time when surgeon was a solid bank but as I went on  many festivals in the last year he just became one of many. he is still good but there is so much more like Blazej Malinowski, DVS1, Peter Van Hoesen, DJ NOBU, Valentino Mora, Claudio PRC etc to just name a few

To be fair, I have only seen DJ NOBU out of that lineup but for me, Da Surge is incomparable. What I didn't realize at Movement last weekend was that pretty much all these DJs let the whole track play and since their track selections are so homogenous, it was difficult not to get bored. Surgeon was in the underground stage, which was proper bunker vibes and he came blasting out with some classic dub. I found myself so excited because it was some novelty finally. He weaves in so many tracks and elements that it was impossible not to be dazzled the entire time. He also lets things "breathe" in key ways so that it's not a complete assault.

I'm probably biased because I treasure so many of his mixes that now go back 24 years or more (fuck). Also, while zoning out at the Detroit Metro Wayne County Airport, the man himself zipped past me in a Sunn O))) shirt. I debated for a second and then knew I had to be that guy because there will probably be no other opportunity. We're all gray af now. I gave chase. He is a very gracious dude and let me fanboy out while sipping a coffee and cream. I always get a kick out of soft spoken and chill artists who make completely brutal tunes. Anyway, achievement unlocked.

  13. I am really susceptible to saxophone textures and Colin Stetson's contribution is amazing on this. I don't know how much Tim may have quantized or chopped the original take but if Colin is doing "Monotony II" live, I've never heard anything like that in a sax. The criticism at the first of the thread is valid in a way because this is by far the most Hecker has sounded like other people. "Sense Suppression" and the intro for Floating Points - "Environments" share a vibe and "Living Spa Water" is a less foreboding take on Jochem Paap - "MRG-RVX". It's a great album though. There's nothing wrong with tropes if the execution is good and I keep coming back to listen this one.

  14. RE: Blerped up downloads. There is a "black hole" from 2005 in my download collection. I needed to know what they were due to an HD failure but they gave me the similar line about the AE store ("sorry, back up your stuff"). To their credit, they did say "name an album you'd like and we'll give it you on the house for your troubles". That was pretty dope of them but I save all receipts, keep a spreadsheet of purchases and back up in triplicate these days. Itunes has never missed a beat on my purchases and Bandcamp seems pretty good so far but when it comes to multiple decades of digital purchases, we'll see who can deliver. Blerp would be the one to trust the least despite how happy they've made me across the years.
