first album was cool. that was a long time ago.

knife/fever ray are overrated. and the associated imagery and aesthetic these day is just plain ugly.

I find the music better than Bjork honestly, and she gets far more attention.

Any other recommendations for similar stuff? I'm a big fan of Aisha Devi, Katie Gately, Abyss X is pretty good.

  2. New Fever Ray album has been announced, releasing 10th March 2023 (too fucking far away).

Well the first album was a masterpiece frankly. The second album rather underwhelming for me. But the two tracks out for this new album hit the spot, so I'm excited!

Look up Carbon Dioxide especially if you're keen on Fever Ray/The Knife. Any fans here?

Has anyone listened to the new album? My first reaction was that it sounds like Maroon 5 playing in front of a Santana poster, which was harsh.
It is a well crafted album for what it is. I hope they get a little loose and weird on the next one though.

Haha that's a hilarious take, and not far off the mark frankly.

It's okay, but definitely too clean for my tastes. Not enough guitar work, too many ballads, the whole album is pretty mid tempo which doesn't give it a lot of variety. I can have fun with a poppier Mars Volta but I dunno about this. Some of the later Omar solo albums like Zappopan have plenty of bite and would have made better bones for a Volta album but I guess going for something new is better than being a poor rehash of old highs.

If you want some of the old manic energy, listen to Black Midi - Hellfire from a couple of months ago.

  4. Kangding Ray - Ultrachroma

    The Fear Ratio - Slinky

The Smile - A Light For Attracting Attention

King Gizzard and Lizard Wizard - Omnium Gatherum

    Black Midi - Hellfire

The year goes alright for me so far, but I haven't dug too deep.

  5. Great album. It has a chilled lonliness about it that scratches my itch.

Being more of a band instead of Thom over dinky beats works very much in its favour compared to the Eraser/Atoms for Peace etc. Those are too full of clicky clacky things beats. I think Radiohead and adjacent are much better as primarily a guitar driven rock band with some electronic flourishes than diving full into electronics (same is true for most rock bands)

Woah - didn’t realize this was Gridlock related. Formless was/is a masterpiece.

    Will check this out.

It is very reminiscent of Gridlock. Not quite as crunchy, but the vibe is there.

Trace is my favourite Gridlock album.

may be we can boil it down a little bit. those lyrics brought up this..

that would also fit the timeline (1994)..but no official idm remixes, just tribal house..

Well shit, that's clearly the original!

Some sort of IDM mix. Could have just been one of those "unofficial" mixes where someone puts an IDM track underneath the pre-existing vocals.

Cheers, really appreciate the direction here!

  8. Hi all,

A friend of mine bought up a track we used to listen to from back in the 2002ish era and I've been driving myself nuts trying to track it down.

This was in the early days of file sharing so it was labelled as Aphex + Squarepusher which is clearly nonsense. Anyway, it had a female vocalist through the whole track over a jazzy IDM beat, nothing too heavy and the vocals weren't chopped up or processed really. Likely a remix.

Some of the lyrics were something like "the blood red lullaby echoing"

Pls halp if anyone has any leads!

  9. Much of my favourite music was critically panned on release, or only appreciated years later. I've never been in touch with genres that are seen as "hot".

I find these sorts of outlets that try and play "taste maker" based on whatever genres are seen as cool/uncool at that particular point in time come across as fickle and transient.

  10. Nick Cave is the man. I like the rockier more unhinged stuff. Hopefully another Grinderman album comes to fruition.

For albums, Let Love In and Dig, Lazarus, Dig! I would recommend strongly. Abattoir Blues double album as well. These are good starting points if you want the rock side of things.

  11. I was a big fan of Syl Kougai's album on Schematic a few years back so was waiting for new tunes from him. He's been dropping his Modular Series one track at a time in the lead up to the full album releasing later this month.

It's pretty good. Great sound design and pretty mind bending, but approachable and structured enough to keep you moving. Track 5 il tombe especially is a total banger for fans of Autechre etc

  12. I went to see them in Melbourne in 2010, and before the gig started I overheard some people talking about how they were looking forward to hearing "Autechno". I could tell that the whole group of 6 had no idea who they were and had just seen the name somewhere, hoping for a nice night of club music. I had a bit of a chuckle to myself and thought these poor bastards have no idea what they are in for...

Surely by now, even the most ardent  fans must have realised that tool are, have always been,  and forever will be total dogshit and that all of their music is dogshit and that anybody who enjoys it is some kind of weird semi sentient dogshit who loves listening to and eating other dog's shit

    I mean.. surely that's a given. No?

Are you auditioning for a Pitchfork writing gig?
