  1. I don't know. I find it a bit sad that some people need drugs to enjoy Ae. No offence to anyone. Just thinking.

I agree with you that people who say you NEED drugs to enjoy Autechre (or anything, really) are in an unfortunate and unenviable position.

However, most Autechre fans (here especially) already enjoy the music... or they wouldn't be fans in the first place. The talk about listening to AE on drugs is mostly about looking at the music from a different angle/gaining a new perspective. I think that's totally valid, and not too far removed from listening to music on great headphones or on a large system, alone/with friends, in the car, at a party etc. These sorts of factors can have a rather large impact on one's enjoyment of music.

  2.

Hope it's not Lateralus Pt.3 (10,000days being part 2 obv)

I can't really say which tool record I like the most. I loved 10 000 days because it wasn't lateralus and I loved lateralus 'cause it wasn't 10 000 days (or Aenima). All tool records unique. I need to be in the right state of mind to enjoy them tho... I don't always have the energy for lateralus, I think that's the hardest for me.

I've been thinking lately. Tool doesn't evolve. They're like the current retro-prog bands making 70s prog that sounds like 70s prog, but not innovating. Their albums sound different, but every time one is released, the first song is immediately recognizable as Tool and sounds like some other Tool song. Stinkfist went right along with Undertow, Schism sounded like it could have been on Aenima, and Vicarious sounded like it could have come from Lateralus. The albums have definitely taken on their own identity, but what I'm getting at is that they're not innovating. They spend years on these albums, being as anal as possible and trying to come up with complex shit, losing site of making something actually unique. Maybe that's not their goal, and it's just something I personally would like. Tool were trend-setters in the 90s but now they're really just one of the bunch. Better than the bunch, but they're so much less relevant. I want Tool to do something they might do if they were putting out their first album in 2014.

Don't get me wrong I will continue to look forward to new material from these guys, and will most likely spend lots of time listening to it when it comes, but sometimes I wish they'd just relax their bungholes and just bang out a spontaneous album. I'm curious what they could do. The results could be more satisfying than something pretentious and familiar that took 6 years to make.

I agree with this... mostly. But I think Aenima was a significantly different sound/direction for the band coming from Undertow. It actually alienated a decent number of fans at the time. Since then though it's just been more of the same. But man... Aenima was fresh when it released.

  3. So these stools will be playing shows in Australia starting April 27th... what are the bets on new material being dropped? slim to fuck all?

I'll be there, so I'll report. Who knows, maybe I'll even record one of the songs through shitty camera phone. I'll make sure to record it in portrait mode next to a drunk guy shouting and a group of people talking disinterestedly, for maximum cringe.

  4. So is that Rot13 stuff Brothomstates?

I love Lassi's music. A true master I think, and a damn shame he hasn't released more. There was a track of his kicking around many years back called "Not Kava" from a compilation Penguin Mechanics Vol 3. It was up as a free download on some site and I had it, but subsequently lost it in a hard drive crash and haven't been abel to track it down since. It's a really really nice track!

Love the Finnish sound like Badloop, Recue, Lackluster Brothom etc.

  5. This album underwhelmed me initially, but after my brother started raving about it a few months back proclaiming it one of AE's best I decided to give it another go.

And I'm hooked! It makes much more sense to me now, and I like it a lot more than when it was first released. This is just crazy. Only Autechre has me changing my opinion of albums radically years after release... I still haven't unravelled all of Untilted or come to terms with Quaristice. Maybe they're next?

  6. I had a big breakthrough with Confield on mushrooms. I was riding a bike (quite quickly!) from the local field after eating a substantial number of cubensis shrooms listening to it on good headphones. It was amazing, one of my favourite Autechre experiences!

Confield is the ultimate mushroom album.
