    confusing

@WATMM: I have an important question.

    Q: Would you?

    A: Y/N

    Thanks in advance.
    It's for a survey.
All data will be published anonymously of course.
    So no worries.
I will refrain myself from answering here in order to not influence the result of the survey.
    Thanks again.

You can listen to some of the recordings of the Perseverance Mars Rover on the NASA Soundcloud page:
    https://soundcloud.com/nasa/tracks
Could be interesting to analyze the sounds in the 16 min recording.
    What I guess we hear:
    Low:
    - Metallic wheels bumping into rocks.
    - Metal on metal clunking.
    Mid:
    - Dusty wind whooshing along the vehicle.
    - Rocky sand in the hollow part of the wheels.
    High:
    - Loose leftover protective anti-static foil / insulation material / other wrapping foil shaking in the wind.
    - Metal on metal grinding. Maybe the weight on the arms of the wheels. Or a hinge of one of the instruments turning.
    - Plastic on plastic grinding.
    - A rat stuck in the vehicle screaming for his life. : )
    - A binary message being transmitted to the rover by an intelligent digital martian life-form. : )

  3. Some data.

Percentage of Population Fully Vaccinated (2 doses) against Covid-19 per Country so far:
    https://ourworldindata.org/covid-vaccinations

    1668836737_2021-03-09-World-ListofCountrieswithPercentageofPopulationwithFullCovid-19Vaccinations.thumb.png.75747b00218a24ec9901288d68ff523a.png
    * I'm looking at full vaccinations (2 doses) here. Not 1 dose vaccinations, nor cumulative vaccinations.
It seems like Israel is doing extremely well. (42.7%) Their percentage is way far above anyone else. I have no idea how. It's kind of crazy. Sadly, their neighboring countries have a way lower percentage. I hope Israel helps them out.
United Arab Emirates and Bahrain are also doing great. No idea if this includes immigrants and guest workers. I hope they help them out as well.
The United States is actually also doing very well. (9.2%) Congrats. Good Job.
Europe seems to be averaging around 2% to 4% it seems. It's Ok I guess, but I expected better. Slow but steady maybe?
Sadly, the average around the World is only at 0.9%.
India seems to be lagging behind at 0.3%.
And there are a lot of poor countries only at 0.1% or even 0%.
No data on China. We can only hope they're doing good.

    Covid-19 Vaccine Efficacy so far:
    49265203_2021-03-09-VaccineEfficacysofar.thumb.png.412260ead43db9f551759c409ea1013d.png
[...It is not straightforward to compare the efficacies of the different vaccines because the trials were run with different populations, geographies, and variants of the virus. In the case of COVID‑19, a vaccine efficacy of 67% may be enough to slow the pandemic, but this assumes that the vaccine confers sterilizing immunity, which is necessary to prevent transmission. Vaccine efficacy reflects disease prevention, a poor indicator of transmissibility of SARS‑CoV‑2 since asymptomatic people can be highly infectious. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) set a cutoff of 50% as the efficacy required to approve a COVID‑19 vaccine. Aiming for a realistic population vaccination coverage rate of 75%, and depending on the actual basic reproduction number, the necessary effectiveness of a COVID-19 vaccine is expected to be at least 70% to prevent an epidemic and at least 80% to extinguish it without further measures, such as social distancing...]
I hadn't really thought about it, but if a country vaccinates its population with a vaccine with low efficacy the epidemic in their country might just linger on.

Anyway, it seems like most countries around the world are making preparations to open up once again.
I wonder how high the percentage of fully vaccinations should be for it to be deemed safe as a country to open up once again.
How high is the mathematical scientific threshold?

Let's hope for the best. Thumbs Up.

  5. I wrongly assumed that the SpaceX Starships were the first fully reusable launch vehicles, but apparently there were already functional prototypes of fully reusable launch vehicles built in the '90s!

    DC-XA.jpg

    McDonnell Douglas Delta Clipper
"The DC-X, short for Delta Clipper or Delta Clipper Experimental, was an uncrewed prototype of a reusable single-stage-to-orbit launch vehicle built by McDonnell Douglas in conjunction with the United States Department of Defense's Strategic Defense Initiative Organization (SDIO) from 1991 to 1993. Starting 1994 until 1995, testing continued through funding of the US civil space agency NASA. In 1996, the DC-X technology was completely transferred to NASA, which upgraded the design for improved performance to create the DC-XA." ... "...cause for considerable political in-fighting within NASA due to it competing with their home grown Lockheed Martin X-33 / VentureStar project." ... "...cancelled..."
    McDonnell Douglas DC-X Launch 8
"On July 7, 1995 a rocket known as the Delta Clipper Experimental (DC-X)  launched into the sky.  This is the world's first fully reusable rocket vehicle. Flight 8 proved that the vehicle could turn over into a re-entry profile and re-orient itself for landing.  This flight took place at the White Sands Missile Range in southern New Mexico."

    Beautiful. ♥
It was sub-orbital and didn't carry a lot of payload though, but still: an amazing achievement.
Nasa should've developed it further imo.
(also, most of their tests didn't explode, lol)

  6. Watching Can't Get You Out of My Head (2021).
It's kind of ok I guess, but it's just all over the place imo.
One has to constantly juggle multiple events/subjects, whilst learning what they have in common and why.
I really really wish each historic event/subject would have gotten its own episode, because they're all very interesting, and maybe with a final episode bringing all of them together.
I loved The Century of the Self (2002) and Bitter Lake (2015), but this one is not my cup of tea unfortunately.

Really? I thought the concept was great, but the execution was saccharine and sentimental even by Disney standards.

Soul, on the other hand, was pretty good.

Haven't seen Soul yet. Will certainly give it a watch.

  8. The Fisher King (1991)
    The Fisher King (1991)
"A former radio DJ, suicidally despondent because of a terrible mistake he made, finds redemption in helping a deranged homeless man who was an unwitting victim of that mistake."
I really like this film. Both Jeff Bridges and Robin Williams are great in it. One of my personal favorite Terry Gilliam movies.

    12 Angry Men (1957)
    12 Angry Men (1957)
"A jury holdout attempts to prevent a miscarriage of justice by forcing his colleagues to reconsider the evidence."
Love this movie. I keep enjoying every minute of it. And it all takes place in just a single room. Superb.

    Fight Club (1999)
    Fight Club (1999)
    "
An insomniac office worker and a devil-may-care soapmaker form an underground fight club that evolves into something much, much more."
It's on a lot must-see lists. I like it mostly for the insomnia part. Both Brad Pitt and Edward Norton are great in it.

    Inside Out (2015)Inside Out (2015)
    "
After young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness - conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house, and school."
Although some of the visuals are not that impressive, still one of the better Disney Pixar movies imo, because of the concept and the emotional notes.
Also, Richard Kind (Andy on Curb Your Enthusiasm, Paul on Spin City) voices Bing Bong, the imaginary friend when Riley was a child. lal

Trying out Outward in Couch Co-Op / Split-Screen.
    It's an Open-World Survival-Craft RPG.
It's fun to go out exploring the world with 2. However, there are very few quests, there's not much story, the world is somewhat empty and the combat mostly comes down to who can deplete the stamina of their opponent fastest.
In a way you've got to make you're own fun in this game, playing together, role-playing a bit.
Oh yeah, you must be able to read maps. (there's no icon indicating your own position on the map)
I'd say, try it out when it's on a deep sale.

  10. Wolfwalkers (2020)

    Wolfwalkers (2020)
Animation film from the makers of The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea. (Cartoon Saloon, Irish studio)
About hunting them pesky wolfs and the friendship between a huntress and a wolf-girl.
Loved the art style. The story / script was just ok.

The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020)

The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020)
Dramatized historical film about the trial (witch-hunt) of a number of people (7) who led the anti-war protests (Vietnam War) in 1968 in Chicago.
Liked it. Give it a watch.
It reminded me to re-watch 12 Angry Men (1957).

    Another Round (2020)

    Another Round (2020) (Druk)
Danish-Swedish film about the mid-life of couple of friends (teachers) testing if alcohol could improve their lives.
Had a bit of double feeling about the message of this film, but I liked the film itself. It has heart. I'd say, give it a watch.

    The Princess Bride (1987)

    The Princess Bride (1987)
Not really my thing, but gf and her sister absolutely love this movie.

The Princess Bride: Home Movie (2020)

Also watched The Princess Bride: Home Movie (2020).
It's a series remake on youtube featuring celebrities at home during quarantine.
    Some good lols.

    Sincerely Louis CK (2020)

Sincerely Louis CK (2020) (stand-up comedy special)
    Hilarious. Loved it.
    Actual many lols irl.
(also, yes, he does note his controversial sexual misconducts)

recently watched Lucky - Harry Dean Stanton's final film. oh man, haven't had a film get to me as much as this one did in a long time. I found it incredibly moving, despite it having very little in the way of a story. the closest comparison I can think is Lynch's The Straight Story, so if that one appealed to you, then definitely check out Lucky.

watching this made me more interested in Harry Dean Stanton, as he's one of those classic character actors that never found widespread success. from what I've read, seemed he was always just himself in every role, and just the same when not on camera.

love some of his quotes from his imdb page:

Loved The Straight Story. Definitely gonna give Lucky a watch now. Thanks for the recommendation.
