  1. Treacle Jr reminds you that the most interesting people are those with a disadvantage to quote Guillermo Del Toro. The reverse domestic violence parts don't normally get shown on video. After watching the film, you have to ring the doorbell of a friend and ask to trim their bush whilst holding a pair of paper scissors.

  2. High Rise

Very disappointing - they had all the right elements but the script just didnt cut it - overall it felt contrived and derivative - too much Kubrick stylising - also felt like it was 3 hours, didn't know when to quit

Best bestiality insinuation in a film ever though. I also felt like all my clothes were very under starched all the way through.

  3. Saw the Game twice in the cinema when it was released. Apart from the ending which was very typical where the woman gets in the taxi. The bit where his brother Sean Penn says "Found myself laying naked on a beach in Ebisssa" I always thought that he pronounced it wrongly it's Ee-bee-tha. After looking at the script, it seems this changed from Spain to Ibiza during filming. Makes more sense being from there, Spain is not high brow enough for a Van Orton.

The Tall Man - 8/10 - really shocked by this one, has horrible ratings everywhere but I had to watch since it is by the director of Martyrs, his follow up that replaced his remaking of Hellraiser. I really enjoyed Martyrs after getting passed all of the horrible violence, there is an ultimately original and interesting story there. Now onto the Tall Man, one should go into it not knowing anything. I really enjoyed the acting, the shots are extremely well composed, the story is very original, it isn't filled with gore like Martyrs, Jessica Biel does a damn fine job as does everyone else. One of the better films of last year that has gotten next to no love.

Thanks for the tip. Just about to put this one on. Faults was like a philosophical explanation of what free will is and how it can be warped without realising it. The scene with the Father and the Daughter in the same room was darker than Vanessa Del Rio's bumhole.

  5. After being hypnotised by Hush, watched Flanagan's Absentia which was a kickstarter funded film. Whilst crowdfunded projects can be a let down as the projects are built towards the backers wishes rather than the original intention. This film is ambiguous unlike so many recent horror films.

  6. Runaway, you may remember this silly 80s sci-fi with Tom Selleck, Kirstie Alley, and none other than Gene Simmons as the villain. This was the first time I watched it as an adult and the first time I noticed that the whole premise of the movie (and even parts of the soundtrack) are like someone played a game of Chinese whispers with Blade Runner as the message. And no matter how stupid the film and plot are, its boxy piece of crap robots were actually a surprisingly accurate vision of the future. Think robot mowers, drones, and self-driving cars instead of Blade Runner's androids.

The bank heist scene is almost as good as the Malcolm bank heist scene from 1986. Tom Selleck plays a good goodie don't he?

  7. Watched a load of 80s films on YouTube over the weekend. Couldn't stop.

Deadly Intentions - 1985 TV film with Michael Biehn in fine form. Biehn was kicking ass in the 80s. This was unintentionally very funny just as Biehn plays a complete a-hole. It reminded me of those real life comic books autobiographical Clowes, Pekar, Matt etc

Final Approach - carrying on my obsession with the female lead I watched this film from 1991, imaging at the end of 2001 a space odyssey the main character Dave being interrogated after his ascension into the abyss. Unbelievable I haven't seen this before.

Dream Lover - this was so good in a dream like american goes to London and loses her marbles way. If you like Altered States, Dreamscape, Paperhouse and other dream sequence films go get your fix. From 1986.

The Borrower - John McNaughton's follow up to Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer. Great prosthetic explosions as the main character is an Alien that likes to rip people's heads off. Had possibly one of the sadist sex scenes of all time off camera when the criminal tries to escape. Brilliant use of sound in this though.

The Silence - recent German film - nothing original about this at all - was like an assembled mish mash of every other crime thriller made. Reminded me of a time when I cycled through Germany though and the countryside really stands out. Rural Germany chlorophyll to turn your eyes green.

Also found that the YouTube plugin on Kodi let's you upgrade the video to the highest quality, the playback seems slightly better than in browser.

  8. Philip Roth's A.P.E.X.

Took me back to a time when I would rent out b-movies from the video shop by the bucket load. Any film that starts with a robotic voice introduction is onto a winner, then add a paradox time line story, robots, fit wife, aggressive chief and subtle nuances to popular culture of the early 1990s then my eyes are staying for the duration. The 3D bits are dated but the headset could be a rival to the latest offerings this year. Early 1990s cinematography in it's 4:3 format can be quite jarring at times and the films can feel quite enclosed. It even has the graffiti tag "PHUQU" which made me laugh.

  9. Maximum Overdrive was a film to be watched in the early hours of the morning, a couple of hours after midnight, when your mind slows down to really take in what is going on. USA at that time seemed to be the land of cult horror. The ending was nicked by Snyder in his Land of the Dead remake.
