i have an FS, and i love it.

the screen is gorgeous, and the form factor of the keyboard is much nicer on the wrists.

i'm happy with it.

oh sorry laptop m8

im basically looking for a laptop to replace my desktop, im downsizing my life at the mo and anything that causes clutter or is too big is getting sold or chucked out so it needs to be able to do most things an average desktop can do but be nice and compact..

I have a 14 month old Sony Vaio A215M.

Absolutely love it. My prized possession. Looks the business, performs well. Battery aint super hot - but certainly competent. The Sony X-Black screen is one of the best I've ever used on a laptop. Just a really well put together and thought out machine.

worth £1179 as new (Nov 2004), can now pick a reconditioned one up from PC World for just £799.

see here.

a friend of mine had an older vaio and the hinges that hold the monitor on were faulty, he inquired about repair at a local shop and they told him that was rather common with that model, that was an older model though. just may want to do some searches.

battery life is supposed to be 5.5 hrs, and that seems right.

F_pht_parts_side_1.gif

inputs include 3 USB 2.0 and 1 firewire, also has a card reader.

Yikes!

i hope you didn't pay that much for it!

if you were going to spend that much i'd get the firewire 410, which is what i will likely be picking up soon.

Firewire410-large.jpg

see, that's called rip-off britain. that's the point. we pay more for everything.

sorry stupid question but how exactly does that connect to the laptop and replace your onboard sound?

those 2 use firewire, but there are just as many (or more) USB 2.0 ones as well.

i've had my vaio for years & love it. with the laptops you can purchase something called a docking station for about $200 that has RCA inputs & outputs. it would be extremely easy to do a live set with your laptop and the RCA inputs make it esy to record. you can buy just about any adapter to fit it. 1/4'' XLR et cetera

id suggest presonus firefox instead of firewire 410

i own fw 410 and it hasent been completley stable

also presonus has better preamps...

of course not perfect but better than nothing (crappy fw410 preamps)

well mainly drivers have been randomly shutting down which makes pretty loud click (that doesnt sound healthy) on active monitors and then i have to either reboot whole computer or in some cases rebooting drivers and restarting music software does the job

also got few bluescreens with messages relating to firewire port

My sister's Vaio freezes all the time and to me its pretty slow. Laptops are slow as fuck in my experience. If you're gonna get a sound card for a laptop then its need to be a Firewire one or an internal one forget USB.

Here is a good article Soundcards. http://www.tweakheadz.com/soundcards_for_the_home_studio.htm

what's wrong with USB 2.0?

edit: nvrmnd, i just read that bit. i plan on getting firewire anyway.
