Guest joshier Posted June 18, 2009 Share Posted June 18, 2009 Being born in the internet age, a lot of my specific descriptive words are learnt through websites and books. I often know the words to describe a particular thing, but lack the way to pronounce it. Sometimes I'll be around others and they'll correct me, however those people aren't the ones I learnt the word from and so I don't know if I'm wrong in the pronunciation of it. A lot of words are learnt through talking in person with your friends, so essentially your vocabulary is moulded around those typical phrases, sayings and words to describe the majority of topics. Sometimes it bugs me because people think I don't know what I'm talking about because I don't say the word correctly - it's because I've never heard anyone say it in my life before. Fred McGriff Posted June 18, 2009 Share Posted June 18, 2009 and fyi proust is pronounced proost, that's always a good one to know when you're talking with well read pretentious individuals. knowing that, it's also fun to pronounce it proust and bait them into correcting you, then looking at them blankly like they're talking about a different author. cichlisuite Posted June 18, 2009 Share Posted June 18, 2009 queue. for a long time i thought people are talking about a letter. and it didn't make sense to me... in general is weird how many words in english have several meanings, or some that are pronounced the same way, but have completely different meaning. i'm learning french and german, but i find english to be the easiest. some phrases stick in my head and associate themselves to a certain concept, so that it can be addressed by simple, catchy couple-of-words :) i think this phenomena is the main reason why people segway into jargon speach, full of foreign mashed-up, trendy words. it's almost like as local language gets deformed... and then you switch cnn to a local news channel, and the words are there. same. like keywords. passwords. trigger-words... ugh..lol Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
