What defines youth ?

Was wondering, according to WATMMers, what makes someone "young", as opposed to "not so young" or "old". As age has no relevance, what makes you think that you are young (or getting older) ?

I would mention frequent back pain to qualify for the "not so young" category.

I say young would count as the first third or so of someone's expected life time.

As good a way as any i've heard

a question appears: Were there any situations in your life, when you simply called yourself a "teenager", or acted like being one and felt good about it?

Definitely yes. When I was 15-20, I called myself a teenager and had no problem about it.

This (age) does not account for criteria of youth. One can be young at 50 imo.

"teenager"

this one is interesting, because I haven´t met a person who would use it while talking about someone in the age 15 and around looooong time ago. Instead, I always hear it when people are described as someone who enjoy going to discos, listening to music, playing computer games, watching MTV and other various stuff. It seems then, that it is some kind of more "official" term for word "hipster"(sorry, I had to type it) that is being used so often nowadays.

The word "teenager" relates to a social norm. It's not that I used to say "let's get stoned, teenagers friends!!!", but if I was asked to what age category I pertained to, I would have answered "teenager". Also, there can be some pride to beinger, a teenager, as opposed to not being a kid anymore.

Young at heart perhaps, but not young.

To me, teenager describes people who talk very loud in public places, get drunk in parks, play shitty music in public places on their new cellphones, and mostly get a sense of personal identity out of their social group.

Teen is a definition; teen as in the tens. By logic that would mean 10 to 19, but for some social reasons it's widely accepted as 13 to 19. Strange.

i wouldnt say social reasons, more like eleven twelve thirteen.

youth is about seeing things in black or white. It's all about dichotomies. When one gets older, opinions ought to become more refined.
