It's very very heavily based off a certain track (& I'm sure you can guess which one..)because I've been told that copying styles will help me out some, if I ever want to successfully transfer the noises that my brain makes up into real life..if ya know what I mean.

But yeah anyway I'm new here, & I quite like this myself so I thought I'd post it and see what you guys think.

its not bad, but yeah definitely just sounds like someone trying to sound like an AFX track

it wouldn't be incredibly hard at all to manipulate the sounds, give it a less stock sampled sound and a more atmospheric depth and make it actually sound like it could be a RDJ track.

pretty much all it would need to sound more authentic is some very fitting reverb, echo's, lil distortion maybe on certain percussion samples

the main synth could use some really nice cavern sounding depthy reverb

and that squelchy bass synth sound thing that could just be a bass drum with a shit load of distortion sound that's on a few AFX tracks

I really don't think you should go any further trying to sound like someone else though

In my opinion basically covering styles like this could pretty well destroy the way someone looks at making music if they want to eventually express themselves fully and hopefully make unique heartfelt art from time to time

because I've been told that copying styles will help me out some

I'm not sure about that. I mean, probably starting out you're going to sound like a mix of your favourite musicians, & that's not a big deal. But actually attempting to sound like someone else seems counter-productive to developing a unique style.

Can't listen to the track right now, so I don't know how rip-offy it actually sounds.

Yeah it's not really my intent to just copy people all the time, I think I worded that a bit stupidly. I told my electronic music friend that I was getting really cool ideas in my head for songs but having trouble actually putting down tracks that sound the way i imagine, & he told me to try and recreate something that i can actually hear piece by piece. The thought of that is incredibly boring though so i decided to make something original that sounded similar to an artist I like instead. Perhaps I've muddled my creative mind a bit with someone elses ideas, and that might not be a good thing...but I think I did learn a couple things so there's that. Not arguing with you guys though, you seem to be smart chaps & I really appreciate the advice.

I'd show you some of my original tracks but as of right now they're pretty shit, haha.

& by the way, that actually is just a distorted bass drum :)

I like it. Melody definitely sounds a LOT like a certain Aphex track, but it's forgivable.

Honestly, don't worry about 'sounding unique' or 'sounding different.' Just make music that appeals to you, and keep pushing yourself. If you're unsatisfied with something, then do something to it to make it complete.

Eventually you will find your own voice/style. :music:

And as to actually recreating someone else's sounds, the main thing I think that advice is given is that in doing so, it could give a clearer idea of how to get certain sounds and how things work together.

EDIT: *is now listening to 'I Care Because You Do.'

Listened to it. You have some nice sounds here, but I can't listen to it objectively because it sounds like something one would find at a Chinese street market, on a burnt cd-r labelled "Worp Records - Great Hit!". You should pursue your own ideas, even if they seem poor/derivative at first. By all means, examine music you like & figure out why you like it, but don't copy it directly. I actually find it's best to examine all sorts of different music, including some from genres you'd normally never listen to. It can give you inspiration without making you sound like a poor man's Aphex Twin.

Well 99% of the time I do pursue my own ideas! Now I'm thinking perhaps I should have just waited until my usual stuff is satisfactory and posted that instead of this little experiment. I get what you're saying though, & yeah if something sounds just like another artist thats all you're thinking about when listening to it & it's difficult to enjoy it for what it is. Thanks for the crit & making me crack up at the chinese street market remark.

I can't find the damn edit button >:(...anyway

I just realized saying my other music is shit could imply that this is the kind of thing I'm good at, like I rip off idm artists all the time for fun or something which isn't the case at all. Didn't mean to come off like that if I did & I don't want to make that kind of first impression for sure. The track just turned out unusually good I guess.

I actually cracked a lil smile at Blankets post. Being compared to RDJ is quite flattering even when you're blatantly copying his style, heh.
