Audiogalaxy is back

Well, sort of.

If we had our way, unfettered, DRM-free file-sharing would be back because we know what music lovers want: a celestial jukebox that includes released music, live tracks, mixes, and all the other funky bits of musical inspiration from mainstream artists to backyard bands. Unfortunately, nobody can offer this experience today because it is next to impossible in the current copyright environment.

The Past: 1998-2002

If you’ve never heard of Audiogalaxy, this is a good summary of Audiogalaxy 1.0—not completely accurate, but good enough.

The Present: 2008-Today

We jumped back into Audiogalaxy, or at least the vision of Audiogalaxy, when we thought we could partner with Choruss to create a full-blown Audiogalaxy 2.0 for students at colleges and universities.

We worked with Choruss, we worked with several major labels and rights holders, and we worked with a couple of schools who were interested in piloting the service. But in the end, the rights holders, universities, Choruss, and us could not agree on the right price and legal structure for this type of service. We knew all too well that this was the risk when we started working with everyone in 2008, but the promise of a celestial jukebox as we envisioned it was simply too compelling not to pursue.

The bottom line is that while some rights holders are too interested in protecting their current business models and are unable to provide a service that customers really want and are willing to pay for, many other rights holders are willing to leapfrog into the future, take risks, and create new business models and ecosystems.

I believe there will come a time when this gap can be bridged, and services like Audiogalaxy will be able to provide the awesome music experiences that customers would love and would vote for with their wallets. Changing the way a whole industry does business is hard and not without risk, but there are plenty of music fans out there who are willing to compensate rights holders for taking this risk to deliver a truly kick-ass music experience.

So, what would a kick-ass music experience offer?

DRM-free music. Download it or stream it, it doesn’t matter – you can access the music however you want.

Unlimited downloading or streaming. You can explore new music without being charged on a per song basis. A flat fee gives you access to everything available through the service.

Keep the music you download. Even if you decide to leave the service or switch to a different provider, your music downloads stay with you and you can play them forever.

High fidelity music. Your music should sound as good on your home stereo as it does on your portable music player. Period.

A social music experience. From 1998-2002, Audiogalaxy 1.0 pioneered a community of passionate music fans that made it easy for members to share music with one another, created a place for artists to discuss their music and connect with fans, and matched music fans across genres and artists. Even with the emergence and growing popularity of social media sites like Facebook in recent years, nothing comes close to offering music fans today the Audiogalaxy 1.0 experience of 10 years ago.

We can’t offer this kind of music experience today, but when the time is right, Audiogalaxy will be ready.

In the meantime, we’re launching an easy-to-use, state-of-the-art cloud music player that you can use to play all the DRM-free music you own from anywhere.

It’s free, so sign up to download it, have fun with it, and let us know what you think as you use it to play your music from any of your computers, or your iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, or Android phone.

The Future

Thoughts for another post, but what I can say is expect the best from us. What we have launched today is only a small piece of our vision. Stay tuned for the rest.
