its really a matter of marketability: cuz if they cant sell enuff units then that no good for them...but man...i would by one (n shit i hate most of the new roland gear cuz it all sounds like plastic)

100% straight from the horses mouth absolutely not

because everyone wants one nowadays and there are only so many out there

don't you people understand?!

roland simply CAN NOT ACQUIRE the needed components for the 303... a number of transistors, resistors, capacitors and (maybe most importantly) the (semi-)diodes for the filter... !!!!

those components ARE NOT MADE ANYMORE!!! not by a single factory..

the components are simply obsolete nowadays, except for use in a 303, and to restart the production of all those components would be way too expensive... even though there is a huge demand for 303's, the costs of the component-production would just be astronomical...

and 100 people does not constitute - everyone out there

roland sells what people want, digital pianos, electronic drum kits, v-accordians.

why just rerelease the 303? roland could easily go back and release all of their classic keyboards onto a single one now.

ps: couldn't all the old analogue transistors, resistors, et cetera easily be emulated?

lol I'm sure th parts used for the original 303 are obselete now, but I'm sure there is better parts in there place. The could just make an update of it. Ok, it would sound different, but still

no shit sherlocks, there are loads of emulators out there using 'better' parts, but it just doesnt sound 303 enough

using emulators is like having sex with a condom, hell yeah its nice, but there always is this plastic feeling, yknow

lets hope that the emulations improve over the next 25+ years, cause all the current 303's WILL die eventually...

huuuumaaanooiiiidddd

Isn't there a hardware emulator/kit recently released that "reverse engineered" the 303? Called xox box or something.

ok follow these instructions and you'll be fine:

1: switch on brain

2: get confortable with your surroundings

3: try to use brain

4: realize that you are on the internet

5: read the entire thread from start till end

6: visit this website called google.com

7: end up at http://www.ladyada.net/make/x0xb0x/

8: pick your jaw up from the floor

this forum is like a fucking sherlock convention sometimes

young padawan, why such anger? I wan't asking a question, I was hinting rhetorically towards the existence of a thing called xoxbox.

iep, that doesn't change the fact that it still hasn't happened. sure there are tons of new synths trying to be classic but dont want to attempt a classic roland sound out of pride and/or arroghance. if roland did remake the synth it wouldn't have the true classic analog aspect but i think they could come pretty close, but too many companies are just staying clear, hoping that Rolands legacy will die out. thats what it comes down to. who's not using a condom with the hotty sluts anyway? pay for all the synths at exorborant (sp?) prices? no. get stds from a hooker? no. rerelease the classic synths in a single keyboard? yes. wear a condom? yes.

i'm sorry that's the best specific comparison i can draw with your analogy

roland are making excuses

they could remanufacture the 303's and 909's, and have them indistinguishable from the originals, even if they have to use updated components in places

the reason they don't is because the unit cost would put their profit margin right down

with machines like the new Juno-D thing and SH-901 (or something), they can just put the same DSP chip into a different shaped, cheap plastic keyboard and sell it new for £500-700

the synth exists on the chip, and was programmed on a computer - it's no more expensive than making a cheap home arranger keyboard which might sell for £99 in Argos

the profit they make off each of their new units is astronomical

they can keep doing what they're doing, making maybe 500% profit on each unit

or they can make 303's and make maybe a 70% profit

it's a no-brainer, as they'd have to commit to remaking classic gear with a much lower profit margin, and they'd need to change their manufacturing lines which would cost 100's of £thousands

tbh, they would sell a helluva lot of 303's, 808's and 909's right now - almost everyone would own 1 of each if they were reasonably priced and services and spare parts were easy to come by... but they probably still wouldn't make as much profit as they're going to make just selling a medium-size run of DSP-based VA, plastic boxes

why would they?

*cough*

*fender, gibson, gretsch, electro harmonix, marshall*

*cough*

Clearly, the living-in-the-past and living-off-endless-variations-of-one-product business models work for a great many musical intrument companies, so Yekker's question isn't exactly stupid.
