Still haven't heard this because a) it's not even out yet
The full digital came out here in the antipodes 5-7 hours ago. I've listened to it 2.5 times and, other than 7empest, little desire to ever listen to it again. It was my 3rd release of the day as well, had some more eagerly awaited stuff to check out first.

Really glad I didn't pay for this. Completely dwarfed by the shadow of their first 4. Tool really trying to be Tool, but failing. Most will see it as mediocre, but some will dish out some well-earned pans.

Gonk on the treadmill is totally amazing.

Aenima>Undertow>Lateralus=10KD checking in.
2000s stuff is GREAT, but the more alt 90s stuff is where's it really at for me

i'm almost wondering if this is a ruse. i get that danny carey probably still uses the same mandala drum pads from the lateralus era, but the drum groove seems to be almost exactly the same form and tempo as 'reflection'. sounds like a cut and paste job from lateralus/10k/APC scraps. same with the other tunes on youtube. not offensively bad, but utterly forgettable. AI generated tool song
Exactly my feelings about it. I can't help but continue to feel suspicious after such a derivative lukewarm single such as this. I don't wan't to be hostile. I don't want to be dismal. But this.is.UNnecessary

Not for me. 5th best album all but confirmed.

I honestly can't see this ever leaving my rotation for too long, a definite keeper. It is just such an idyllic listen to roam around in.

It can't match Eraser & TMB for me (they just mean much more to me), but it is a very fine album indeed, not a dud track in sight.

As long as it's graet, idgaf what genre it is.

Covenant is one of Ridley's better films, Prometheus one of his worst. They are worlds apart in quality. Preferring Prometheus is preposterous to me.

I liked Prometheus on release (saw it a few times in 3D & on DVD), but sadly I don't much rate it anymore. 6.5/10 (below Resurrection).
...
You have aged...poorly.
One of Ridley's least auteurist works and worst scripted. Reminds me more of a generic 90s/00s blockbuster (even 50s sci-fi) than a genuine Alien film (more like an above-average Trek). Despite intermittently bringing some flair (enough to fill up a few decent shorts), on a general level it fares little better than a high-functioning AVP1. At times it is hard to believe Ridley was even on set that day, his usual touch is all over the place.
After enjoying this a lot through a series of 2012 fan viewings, this proved a sobering revisit. By mid-century this will be an obscurity. The more lasting Covenant was a colossal improvement, demonstrating that awkward lessons were clearly dealt with.

Dawn Chorus does have that prestige sense of purpose about it, like it is meant to be a standout track, but the talking delivery used on that & Last I Heard just bugs me, doesn't suit Thom well for mine. Play to your strengths!
But you never know. TMB by and large took on an added dimension after Thom's breakup and her cancer passing.

After about 10 listens (2.5-3.5/5 range):
Twist
The axe
^these are the 2 standouts (longest for a reason)
Not the news
Runwayaway
Impossible knots
Traffic
I am a very rude person
^all very groovy
Dawn chorus
Last I heard (…he was circling the drain)
^nice, but need more growing
The axe has been the biggest grower.I wish Eraser had sound design like this. His material on the previous two albums is a lot stronger for mine, but the production and vocal technique here is more adventurous.
-
the second half has some of the nicer tracks on offer, like Not the news & the closing two.
-
2 listens and disappointed by this one. The songs just aren't there this time around. Maybe the weakest album yet to come from the Thom or Jonny clan. And I adored Eraser/TMB.
Oh well, hopefully a grower

Agreed on the digitised audio quality and littering of nostalgic crumbs. I have such a great time listening to these, very primordial ooze to our long-time obsession, and distinctly them. 89-93 also encompasses my own early childhood years (b.'88), so it aligns personally quite nicely. My family didn't even have any tech in the house until we got a TV towards the end of '93.
On my alphabetically arranged iTunes this release goes directly into The Avalanches Since I Left You, works a treat.

This last 2 weeks of June is just an insane period for new music releases. I love this one, already listened several times since the live broadcast.

Coming around to Madonna's newie. It's more of a sum-than-the-parts album, unlike some other recent ones it engages effectively through to the end without getting a tad overlong, monotonous or lacking her presence. She still hasn't made a crap album for mine, the bottom one's here are just less preferable to me.

c16 deep tread has always been my fave, find it very cathartic.
Given it featured fairly prominently on LIVE '15, it might have been overlooked on release by some for feeling more played out or less exotic.
mesh is the only one I don't really care for (still find it indulgent)
