Purty damn disappointed with Skyfall. Excellent opening sequence with the train, the rest was ok (can we get a more basically structured plot up here, yo) . Bardem turned up for the last hour but by that point the plotholes were gaping.
Mendes' best film remains Road To Perdition.

Detachment was pretty damn engrossing and thought provoking. Brilliant cast, a lot of which i guess they only hired for an afternoon and were seriously underused.
Take This Waltz was a sickly, girly, contrived, self indulgent mess which would have Nora Ephron spinning in her grave. It tries so hard to be an emotional, quirky depiction of the modern woman. It just sucks. They even gave Seth Rogen a douchbag haircut to show he can be a dramatic actor. Ughh.
A Fantastic Fear Of Everything was an awful, awful waste. A film made by some hipsters which had some nice visuals, but in true hipster fashion no substance. No cohesive story, they were too busy trying to recreate Terry Gilliam rather than looking at the big picture. Hipsters will be hipsters.
The Amazing Spiderman - It started off good before descending into CGI madness. It's ok but falls short of the Raimi one which had the appeal of feeling fresh.
Dark Shadows was weird in a bad way. I dunno if Burton is watching his recent films back and seeing what an audience sees but he is really misfiring with this and Alice in Wonderland. I dunno, i give up. I thought Sweeney Todd was good. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what he does next. I heard he did a Killers video a couple of weeks ago. How low?

I decided to bite the bullet and watched the first four series of Breaking Bad between Dec 15th - Jan 10th, roughly. It was pretty intense. I needed to take a break from it before starting the final series so I started on Boardwalk Empire's first five episodes which is kinda slow in comparison, but i'm assured it'll pick up so i'll keep going with it.
Breaking Bad must have the best Pilot episode ever... and the next two episode were gripping aswell....from then on i just kept watching ...

Excision 6/10 - A familiar take on the ''disturbed teen'' movie. The 18 year old fantasises about being a transplant surgeon and cutting up the people she knows and playing around in their blood. It could have been better, there was scope for the story to go deeper into the character but it ended up being another one of those films let down by it's ending ( I've a lot of potentially good films this year let down by their ending).
Dark Horse 7/10 - Solondz is back and he's in familiar territory exploring dysfunctional people, this time blurring the lines between fantasy and reality more than ever. Good characters (an understated Walken is funny as fuck) and worth a second viewing. Ending could have been better.
Your Sister's Sister 7.5/10 - Some might say this is a chick flick in the same mould as Friends With Kids but I am definitely starting to get a soft spot for these US indie comedy dramas because the characters are engaging and you are actually drawn into the scenes, watching what the actors are doing. Not as Good as Jeff Who Lives At Home, because the ending was kinda inconclusive.

Kill List 9/10 - Watched this again at the weekend. I love it. The intense sense of dread and the build up. They really got it right. the ending wasn't satisfactory for a lot of people, who gave it a low rating just because of that. They felt unsatisfied after being gripped for so long. But i think a film which can intrigue/grip you by the balls for 99% of its running time doesn't deserve to be slated for it's somewhat inconclusive last scene.
How I Spent My Summer Vacation 7/10 - Pretty damn solid. It was implausible in every way but I liked Gibson's narration and his general swagger round the Mexican ''jail''. Worth checkin out.
Biutiful 8/10 - A film which you really learn to love a week after you've watched it. Wasn't too impressed after viewing it, but then you put the pieces together. Probably the most ambiguous ending out of all the films I've mentioned, because the fate of Bardems children depend on a scene where your not sure whether it occurs .. or if its one of his on-the-verge-of-death hallucinations. It's really annoying.
Paranormal Activity 4 3/10 - I'm starting to feel bad for the demon in this franchise. In the first few films Toby (the demon) had some menace and purpose. In part 4 he's pretty much a glorified babysitter. He plays with toy trains, chills out in sandpits, takes baths with 5 year olds. Much like PA2 it's a really nice luxurious house so I can understand why Toby might want to kick back and relax by the pool for a while. But when you're playing Xbox dancing games with kids when your supposed to be scaring the shit out out of some random family the demons of hell must be like ''Toby, report back to base. Dude, take the weekend off and see me in my office 8am''

Just saw Evil Dead 1981 after seeing the 2013 trailer for the remake they are doing of it.
Not bad considering its time period. Really looking forward to the remake now.
Yeah, I watched that trailer yesterday and it does look pretty good. A lot of fans (including myself) were in doubt about an Evil Dead remake (they were mainly pissed off that the character Ash wasn't going to feature) but judging by the trailer it looks like a real dark horror film without the comedy of the original.

On The Road - 5/10
It's meh.... exactly as i expected to be. They recreated the look of the 1950's flawlessly (reminded me of Angel Heart), but the pointless characters who drift along aren't really engaging, so it's difficult to give a hoot about what happens to anyone in this film. It's the poor relation to The Motorcycle Diaries.
Killer Joe - 10/10
This is a rare case of everyone involved in a film absolutely nailing it. Special mention to Thomas Haden Church. What a performance.

Liked 'Plus Ten' but it would be good to hear something more than these noodling synth sounds that himself and a few other of his rephlex noobs rest on their laurels with. Something with a heavy drum beat, where you cant even hear the noodling synths. He'd be out of his comfort zone.

Phenomena. Bonkers Argento film. 8/10.
Inferno. Good atmospheric Argento film. 8/10.
The Beyond. Quality gorey zombie film from fulci.
Phenomena is extremely weird. Jennifer Connolly & Donald Pleasance battling bugs from what i can hazily remember. I'm sure it had a pretty bloody amazing finale.
The New York Ripper - 7/10. Nice horror but completely spoiled by the rippers (dubbed) voice on the phone provoking the cops (some critics have said he sounds like Howard the Duck). Hopefully we'll get a subtitled version of this film someday.
The Raid - 9/10 Awesome.
Avengers Assemble - 8/10 I'm Feelin it.
Silent House 4/10 Is that the ghost of Jimmy Savile haunting that house? Boring.

Jeff Who Lives At Home - 7.4/10 Damn good. Jeff's day out from his mum's basement, goes out and reconnects and meets his destiny.
This Means War - 4/10 Worse than the reviews would have you believe, the film had too many lame elements across the spectrum.
Pusher (2012) - 6/10 Delivered just what I expected. Pretty entertaining. Worth a watch. The original was a grimey tale of despair, this is a bit more upbeat (the colours are brighter).

It doesn't fit the Prometheus/Alien universe AT ALL! It sounds like a rejected Jurassic Park theme by someone who tries to sound like John Williams.
It actually sounds a bit like Howard Shore's score from Spider. Not sure if thats good or bad.
I'll reserve judgement until i see prometheus again on the telly.

Director's cut should ditch the scene where Idris Elba and Charlize theron arrange to make love in order for her to prove she's not a synthetic organism. that was crass. It was like a scene from Sex & the City.

Harsh. Although it was inexplicable that they would dodge bullets like that. Infact it would be impossible. However, I didn't let reality get in the way of a rather compelling narrative structure. The love story held it together like glue, man.
Flight - Decent film, the most 'adult' orientated film I have ever seen from Zemeckis. Some VERY obvious music choices though. 'Sweet Jane' and 'Under The Bridge' for heroin OD's and Scorcesesque Rolling Stones tracks for coke snorting. Really?
Most inappropriate choice of music since the hip hop pop in Django.

Gonna watch The Imposter tomorrow, looks good. I was amazed by Man On Wire, it was beyond comprehension. One of my fave documentaries was on Channel 4 about 10 years ago and hasn't been repeated since, Hardcore..its about a young english mother who goes to America to take on the porn world but is forced into submission by the harsh reality of the life she has chosen in the form of two of the shadowiest characters in existence...Dick Nasty and Max Harcore. They are like Ringwraiths.
