  1. Finished Being Dead, the ending was quite touching. Will definitely try more Crace.

Been digging into Murakami's 1Q84 lately- a bit slow to start but it's weirdly infectious after a while... I'd recommend for a slow burn.

Mild spoilers. Murakami is hit or miss for me. I had trouble finishing the book, I felt the character development was handled very poorly. If a story has no development it can be frustrating, but his handling of Aomame was just strange. The strong person in the first two books just sort of vanishes and it becomes all about Tengo. I wouldn't put it past myself to have missed something, though.

Interesting, I'll have to relay what I thought once I finish it!
I came into this one after reading Norwegian Wood, which I loved so I didn't/don't really know what to expect.

In Slovenia it was released in two volumes - book 1 & 2 in the first volume and book 3 in the second. As I understand, Murakami wrote the first two books as a finished whole, but then came back to the story because he felt he needed a happy ending. If you ask me, he should've stopped after the second book. As I read the first volume I thought this is the best shizzle ever, it really drew me in. I got the second volume as fast as I could. Big mistake - Murakami really blew it. It was just really boring. A large part of the third book was an uninteresting character finding out stuff that already happend in the first volume. I couldn't even read it all, I skipped over parts. A shame really :(

1q84 was my first Murakami, and I liked it but man it's the worst one to start on lol

I think the point of all those boring sections where they're exercising and making salads and editing a novel manuscript is brought into focus when they finally meet and the narrator says something along the lines of 'It was then they realised just how alone they've been'. All the boring stuff is to make you realise the lives they are leading and had led are empty, but only become aware of it when they meet each other and find the happiness they last experienced when they held hands briefly at school. IMO, anyway. I experienced the previous three volumes rush through my mind in a blur when that line was said, and made it worth the slog (because it was a bit boring in places lol).

That said, when I got to to volume 2's end, I was incensed. Like 'that's it?' Definitely glad he continued. The most boring parts was all the cult stuff, didn't really add much to the story imo.

  2.

Will we be allowed to comment on tracks?

Each page has this at the bottom.

    Comments

To comment on this you have to bag at least 1 track.

Not trying to sound like a dick but doesn't that kind of answer your question? or maybe it's not working for you, considering the site is crashing left and right. Basically, if you buy at least one track from a certain release then you should be able to drop a word in that release's comment section.

I can comment on the music I just bought, funnily enough I have been given a username, 'user159811'

  3. Charles Dickins' Tale of Two Cities. It's long-winded in descriptions as these old novels are but my god could the man plot a plot!

Also just about to finish Being Dead by Jim Crace and it's good. Shout-out to Spiral for the rec.

  4. Congrats, Squee!

A lazy coworker states that the reason he does little work is because he'll never get a raise, so there is no point in doing more than he needs to (which is jack shit, and everyone hates him for it). Little does he know that, a few feet away, a certain worker gets paid more than he does because he worked hard last year, doing a job that wasn't his. In fact, the lazy coworker even used me as an example (in a conversation with someone else) of someone who is being dumb for working hard (honestly, the job is easy) and earning the same money for working hard.

:duckhunt: = me whenever he rants (again) that everyone gets paid the same

  5. A peculiar piece of Isis related info is that Aaron Harris (along with two members of Deftones) was in the Paris venue the Eagles of Death Metal were playing in moments before a terrorist attack occurred in 2015 (although he left before it happened).

Basically, a former member of Isis the band was in the venue before Isis the terrorist group shot the place up.

  6. Cloud Atlas was good, not perfect but braver work than most try to do. Look forward to reading Bone Clocks, which I also have.

Starting on The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. I want to see whether or not it really is a turkey (some say so).

  7. Clearly a masterpiece in music journalism

I'm sort of impressed they've let those reviews stay up, although there are reports they often retcon certain reviews if they want to keep someone sweet. For example, I could've sworn Aphex's Computer Controlled Music got a 6.9 on release, but the other day I saw it had a 8.1.

  8. I started reading a Pitchfork review of the new Fleet Foxes album, which contained the sentence "at times, Pecknold threatens to be the most misanthropic, nontraditional student to wander an Ivy League quad since a bearded Rivers Cuomo hobbled through Harvard."  I hate music journalism so fucking much.  But it serves me right for still periodically visiting a site like Pitchfork.

Pitchfork doesn't review music, it reviews context. They're sort of documentary writers, where the score is related directly to how much of a narrative they can wrap around the music being reviewed. Plenty of good music gets sub-par scores because the reviewer can't find 'the story'. Just making a good tune is not enough: it has to be representative of some part of the musicians life, otherwise why bother?

That said, ignoring the 'shimmering shards of icy glass through lasers' type of writing, I often agree with their reviews. Even if they assume way too much into the music-making process.

  9. Top unboxing. Even so, would be neat to own them on wax. Maybe if I ever end up passing Houston on my way to work somehow, I'll remember to get a copy or twenty.

Also Lopez, if you receive any crazy offers from people could you post them? Would like to see how batshit some people might go to get a record they can buy from a store.
