  1. Binged through ep 6 of S2 of From, then watched 7 Sunday. I've come to the conclusion that as a show to binge this is great fun, but watching episodically is nightmarish. Especially this season where not a lot seems to he happening - I'd have been so frustrated watching week to week, but that (mostly) gets smoothed over if you can just watch the next episode. Adding a bunch of new characters doesn't help, bc now you have to divide your attention.

Also, started watching Fubar and... its good? Dunno, maybe I'm just the right age/ market but thoroughly enjoying it so far. It knows exactly what it is, and executes on that thing well. Sometimes easy to forget that Arnie actually has some pretty great comedic timing.

  2. It's an interesting question, but I think the word "should" is problematic. Thought about this a lot over the years - the human voice adds an anchor element that more people seem to connect to than purely instrumental music. Lots of people I know who listen to a wide range of music eschew electronic music (or instrumental music in general) because it doesn't have vocals (or lyrics) - it's a hurdle many don't want to leap over.  It's also undeniable that the human voice adds a particular texture that's unique - in some ways, the OG analogue sound.

It's probably not a coincidence that all of Aphex's most popular tracks (and, one could argue, knowingly promoted tracks) feature vocals of some sort. Come to Daddy. Windowlicker. Even Minipops has a monster hook of a vocal melody (though unintelligible lyrics).

Accordingly, I feel like an electronic artist might find their music connecting more with more people when they include singing and lyrics, but I'm not sure that means it "should" happen. I guess it depends on what you want. Do you want more people to listen to what you make? Then, maybe, yes include vocals and/or lyrics. Then there's the question of if the song itself is something where vocals and/or lyrics fits - clearly some of the Sus dog tracks the vocals are an integral part - if you took them away, then the song isn't the song anymore.

Personally, although I totally understand/get it, I get slightly turned off by it partly because it seems like something that Warp vociferously has been pursuing recently. By that I mean their decision to try and court musicians who are electronic (or even, barely electronic) but with vocals and lyrics, which necessarily seems a bit more mainstream, and seems a little like abandoning their original niche market. Again, I get it. You want to build your label, you gotta pursue artists who will draw in a larger audience. Even the biggest Warp artist's of yore are still relatively niche and, let's face it, artists like []< and Aphex are rare just because of their caliber of musicianship and originality.

Still, and maybe this is just me hanging on to nostalgia, I miss the days when a Warp release engendered excitement and anticipation. Like, you would just instabuy, blindly because you knew whatever it was, it was gonna be weird af and also dope af. It's like the reverse now - any time an artist gets signed to Warp I'm like "well... this is gonna be some indie rocky, alterna-electro shit I'm gonna hate." I miss the days of them releasing challenging instrumental electronic music that stood completely on it's own as compositional pieces - sometimes I fear that vocals, while grounding, also ground music to a particular point in time, which weakens the longevity of a piece.

TLDR: Sure, why not. Also, WARP I'm disappointed in you.

Anyone else a fan of this one?

Fucking looooove this. Indelible memories from childhood watching it, but even as an adult the scene where he's ripping out the pages of the book and talking about age/time... man, powerful stuff.

Goddamn this is the best thing ever. I just checked it out and the 80's station is playing a Run DMC marathon, fucking amazeballs

Tangentially:  I've never been huge on Jonathan Glazer but the reviews for his new film (which debuted at Cannes) have me intrigued. It sounds excellent.

Yeah, kind of came out of nowhere too? I'm actually a pretty big Glazer fan (mainly coming from his music videos and commercials - the Director Series DVD wore out my player ages ago), but somehow totally missed he was putting together a new film until a few weeks ago.

Pretty great review of the new film here (spoilers abound, but I'm not sure it will actually makes a difference with a film like this): https://www.vox.com/culture/23733985/zone-interest-arendt-banality-review-canes-jonathan-glazer

iirc from your posts you have a young boy? prepare for these games to fuck with your feelings hard then, especially the second. but they're worth it. I just finished my second playthrough of Requiem cos I just didn't want to let it go. I can't remember the last time I dove straight back into a game just to relive the story (rather than collecting achievements or whatever). it's a hall-of-famer for me. I'd like to know what you think of it if you get around to it.

Ok, bet very good to know. Close, I have a daughter but I suspect that'll not make much difference if a child is involved/the emotional depth is there - your child is your child, you know?

Good to be forewarned, means I'll probably wait a little until I'm mentally prepped (it's crazy - I have to be careful watching things like horror films these days bc if there is a kid component it can overwhelm me ... like, even stupid horror stuff. Lol, I guess love makes you vulnerable)

the two Plague Tale games I've been yakking about stand firmly in contrast to the miserable AAA industry trends you guys are talking about. the gameplay can be a little rough around the edges but 1. it tries (and  imo mostly succeeds) at something different, and 2. the greater merits lie in the "art" of the game rather than the mechanics anyway.

That's awesome. I have a good buddy who (like most of us) almost never finishes games, but he told me the Plague Tale games are ones he absolutely plays through bc they are just so incredible. Guess I need to bump it my list!

I feel like a lot of games nowadays are paint-by-numbers ideas pushed by higher-up financial strategies instead of teams getting to work on something they can freely form until a prototype for an idea can get pitched properly. Maybe it's also an issue with lead game designers? Like that FPS magic game, it legit makes me wonder if these people are creatively bankrupt or if they just type "generic sci fi magic design" into some neural network and go "yes! that! market strategy said this works!"

100% on all of this. So much feels like it was designed in some boardroom based on gaming trends that, by the time the game releases, are already woefully out of date anyway.

  9. I left the PS showcase with a realization, which was that there are a ton of samey-ass games out there I could give AF about, but that's offset by one or two titles a year that are peak gaming, and really all I need to be satisfied.

Kind of great actually - like, there is so little time for gaming these days because life, but it's ok, because I don't feel like there's this huge backlog of awesome titles I'm missing out on....

just watched this the other day, it's awesome, such a secluded niche of creativity!

I can't imagine the amount of work that went into this (I mean, all of it - not just the technical details but the planning, journal, forum posts, etc.). Friggin' amazing.

    The Pope’s Exorcist

This is the most B-movie-ish 2004-ish film I’ve ever seen. Russell Crowe seemed like he was having a blast.

I feel like this is a such an accurate review of this one. I've been mining some Facebook groups for horror and found footage films recently and god is this movie getting savaged. I didn't get the hate. Total B-movie throwback, Crowe is just fucking hilarious in it. Everything doesn't have to be A24 ultra-slow burn arthouse fare it's a popcorn possession movie for FFS.

Speaking of which, watched this gem the other night:

    image.jpeg.79e2468a83e76d8e55a7a489f7a8ef0d.jpeg

Definite mid-range horror, but also very well carried off. Basically, a team of wanna-be influencer types have a show where they stream "live exorcisms!" but it's all a hoax... until it's not. Actually much better than the dumb premise sounds, carried off by some excellent acting and writing. In a lot of ways, I actually wondered if this was a Christian film in disguise, because there is a sense of underlying ethos here that feels particularly Christian - but the film is so good I actually don't care. Also some pretty amusing indictments of societies' obsession with social media - not really heavy handed though, almost satirical.

    Also:

    Spoiler

Haha, mad props for the film throwing a late game twist that total undercuts the initial sense of triumph and ends the film on a total downer note that's also kinda hilarious. Total Fuck Around and Find Out on a global scale.

  12. This weekend could have been a commercial for gaming company TM in our household. Everyone was sick and at one point:

    * toddler on the couch next mom playing games on her fire tablet but also demanded that

    * dad played Jedi Survivor on the TV (I'm not complaining) and

*mom lying on the couch playing TOTK on the Switch in handheld mode.

Is this a healthy approach to wellness? Probably not, but something to be said for having a nice distraction like gaming when you're feeling like crap.

A whole scene of fan fiction has popped up in response to sad Zelda Dad, lol. My theory is he’s dead, ala Jacob’s Ladder, and hasn’t accepted it yet. Some say his wife cheated, and that’s why he’s numb and they don’t make eye contact.

Brilliant ad, but also kinda disturbing? lol maybe because I can kind of identify (hats off Nintendo marketing team). I read somewhere that this was partially based on a user review of BOTW. EDIT: found it: https://www.escapistmagazine.com/nintendo-australia-emotional-tears-of-the-kingdom-ad-based-on-japanese-amazon-review/

My daughter (just turned 4) has been sick since Tuesday, but well enough to remember that mom needed to check and see "if the new Zelda was ready." When I left for work, they were getting ready to boot it up, hoping it provides a nice distraction for both of 'em.

Also, caved last night and got Jedi Survivor. I went into the first one with low expectations, and was pleasantly surprised. For this one, it's like they basically took everything that was good from the first one, tightened it up, and then added more good shit. I'm not even out of the prologue and I'm like "oh shit, this is pretty great huh?"  -

    solid combs performance though

Yeah, kind of a hidden gem this one. I remember watching this and thinking the portrayal of death/the movement/look was so spot on.

    Just watched:

    dPredestination (2014) - IMDb

Based (apparently) on a Robert Heinlen story, it definitely feels like an adaptation of a Heinlen short story (for good or for ill). It threw me a bit, because you kind of go in expecting this slam/bang action time travel thing, but it's much more a study in character. Some interesting commentary on gender identity going on, excellent acting both by Hawke but also Sarah Snook who knocks it out of the park.

Solid film, much more Somewhere in Time than Back to the Future. Well shot, well directed, well acted. I wouldn't pay money to rent it, but would recommend watching it whenever it cycles around to streaming.

Oh, can't remember if I wrote about this but this reminds me I recently watched another time travel shenanigans movie Shadow of the Moon. That one is utter dogshit who general twist you see coming immediately and whose larger twist didn't make me care even one iota more about the characters (even though it was supposed to). A promising opening that just kind of turns to dust. Similar themed movies too but Predestination does literally everything better.

i actually never watched lost but was aware some this show was from the same producers. it's reassuring to know they have a plan.

btw: i never wanted to start on season 2, but i couldn't help myself. i got through season 1 watching 2 episodes daily so maybe i'm not a proper heavyweight binger

LOST was one of the few shows that I watched week to week, and I haven't gone back since - I wonder if the buildup and whatnot will seem artificial or weird when there isn't this long span of time between eps when one would endlessly theorize/conversate about what was going on. I'm in the minority that didn't absolutely hate the last season - but I did dislike that it was clear they had thrown some shit out there that was "oh we'll figure out what that is later" but really never did.

We're in the same boat in terms of binge fitness - by the time I get done w/ work + household stuff I have time for 1 maybe 2 episodes of anything (and that's if I don't do ANYTHING else, make music, read, whatever). Only reason I got through the first season so quick was b/c I said fuck it and ending up watching some on my lunch break ^o^

i had similar anxiety when the show first began, but i think they've done a good enough job even with the start of the second season (i'm i the only one there so far?) so i've still got my fingers crossed

also, can i just mention boyd's son dating persian lisa bonet are two of my least favorite characters not just because of the juxtaposition of the guy's lack of acting chops and the girl's quality of giving clumsy dramatic beats. it's distracting but also amusing

    flol @ "persian lisa bonet"

Ok, this is all reassuring - I also read something from the showrunner that basically was like "we learned from our mistakes on Lost and have a clear roadmap for where this is all going, even if we deviate along the way." Then the fear is, like, pleeease don't get cancelled.

I'm exercising the most delayed-gratification willpower ever not starting the 2nd season, but really glad it's going well. My plan is to hold out until about ep 7-8 and start watching because then I'll probably reach the final episode along w/ everyone else.

Binged about 7 or 8 episodes. I'm sure I'll end up hating wherever it goes with a passion, but here I go...

lol I have similar fears - like... please have a plan, let it be a good plan, and execute on that plan. Still, though, scratches a particular itch really well

Not a perfect series, but they really captured some kind of vibe. A shame they didn't build the world even further

.. maybe I should keep watching? lol. I totally agree, everything has a specific feel that I think is actually pretty close to the artist's vision. Respect for that, even if the show itself has it's flaws (what show doesn't? ... #openscanofworms #TrueDetectiveS1istheanswer)

watched a couple eps, it's alright. Twilight Zoney vibes with a depressing af tone so far.

Just FYI, this is based on the work of Simon Staalenhag. I .. think maybe I came across him here on WATMM? Can't remember, but he has this very distinct style that blends a sort of throwback nostalgia paintings with retrofuturistic vibes. Very distinct/unique. His book The Electric State is a fantastic piece of story/art and all his stuff seems to have this sort of bittersweet edge about it.

I started watching the series and actually had to stop because, at the time, it evoked such feelings of melancholy I had to take a break. Not peak TV, but I actually feel like they did a good job capturing the sensation of his stuff.

Electric State also supposed to be made into a film/series by the Russo Bro's for Netflix w/ Millie Bobbie Brown and Chris Pratt and although I like all of those people, I really am concerned about the adaptation. The book is a meditation on searching and loneliness - you can just tell they're gonna be like "let's add some Chris Pratt wisecrackery to really jazz this thing up!" and that's going to, frankly, ruin the fucking thing

@T3551ER was literally going to write about this show. binged season 1 in about 2-3 days and already pulled the trigger on the first episode of season 2. no way i could they could leave me hanging like that despite the shows many *ahem* flaws

also, i agree about that title. WTF were they thinking?

ha! It must be something in the air - I don't even remember how I heard about it but I get the feeling maybe it only recently became available on Prime? Totally glad I pulled the trigger though (yes, def some flaws, but ultra compelling/fun ride).

lolol - it's maddening. Maybe it's their secret plan to ensure people never figured out WTF is going on because it's impossible to find any research/discussion on it ^o^

EDIT: Is the first ep of Season 2 good?

EDIT 2: No, don't tell me

    EDIT: TELL ME

  20. From - Rotten Tomatoes

From - the TV series whose name makes it frustratingly difficult to google and find out more about, particularly when it's a show that invites so much watercooler talk and speculation.

Who knows if they will stick the eventual landing, what I will say is that I started this show on Monday and lost many nights of sleep because I couldn't stop myself from watching the next episode. It's like Lost but 100% more horror - kind of echoes of Stephen King in there too. It's not perfect, but it is very, very entertaining with some interesting character stuff going on in amidst the mind bending puzzle box shit.

First season is available to stream for free on Amazon now. Taking all my willpower to not not watch first ep of S2 (I'd much rather just wait for the season to be over and binge, b/c I hate the week to week suspense of shows like this. I'm gettin' too old for this stuff)
