So they're using brushless DC motors as encoders like this? And simultaneously using them for mechaical feedback (i.e. turning knobs to match preset values)? That's a good (expesive) idea, and I'd expect the lifespan of any half-decent brushless motor would be WAY beyond even a high quality pot or encoder.
EDIT: wrong link
edit again:
From here
"The brushless drone motors use contactless optical sensors and are built to be extremely durable, with a lifetime rating in excess of 50 million cycles—500 times more than conventional potentiometers. "
yeah, if they have a good long lifespan, lot of potential there. Also curious about how much more involved/difficult repairs would be.

No it's a crazy fixed arch synth but is has a good mod matrix. It is a poly analog desktop synth that has mechanical keyboard switches and motorized faders, 4 layers, 12 voices, 4 outputs, MPE support. 2 VCOs and a wavetable osc. It's only got a single moog-style lowpass VCF though, so somewhat limited there. Stupidly expensive, I probably shouldn't buy one.
It looked cool in the demos but sounded meh. Any synths got its sweet spots though so ymmv.
Also, between that and the Motor synth, I'm curious about lifespans. I know the NINA's using drone engines for the knob mods, and I think the Motor synth is using them for the oscillator discs. How long will those last before they start going out? Is it comparable to components in existing synths over the last few decades? If so, that's pretty cool.

Not a tracker, but Drambo is a very hyped app for a reason. People say it's somewhat an easy-to-use octatrack married with a flexible modular synthrack. Been never attracted to either of the two. But I recently downloaded it for a train ride. And man it rocks!!
Great combination of sequencing tr-style, note sequencing and piano roll. Very good sounding modular that abandons cables for a good reasons. But also with sampling you can go wild. Didn't even feel 9 hours passing
Drambo rules. Build synths/whatever from scratch. It's MIDI modulation options are the best iOS has ever had. Love it. Really want a more powerful iPad so I can do more with it.

I've collected way more hardware sequencers than I need because there's usually no way to try out something unless you buy it. I've currently got (in order of acquisition) Squarp Pyramid MK3, Torso T-1, Twisted Electrons Crazy8 + Crazy8 Beats, Pioneer Toraiz Squid, and OXI One. I've also got a Polyend Tracker, which can be used as an 8-track monophonic sequencer. There are sequencers in many of my other devices, like the 1010music Blackbox.
I'd still like to try out Synthstrom Deluge, Squarp Hapax, Polyend Play, and of course a Sequentix Cirklon, but high-end means high price. Some more exotic ones are Spektro Audio's NGEN, and Sixty Four Pixels' Noodlebox. There are plenty of odd-and-not eurorack sequencers out ther, but I'm most probably not going that way. I'll maybe get an SQ-64 to try out at some point.
Probably gonna sound like a dick here but you need to hear this either way. Slow down. No possible way you've maxed the sequencers you've listed as currently owned. Focus on that first. At my height I owned maybe half as many hardware sequencers. Including the Squarp Pyramid. Years later and I *still* don't max the Squarp when I use it solo.
Why I feel strongly enough to say this, is if you get full GAS with sequencers, you'll get impatient and miss a ton of potential functionality. Both you and the manufacture ultimately lose at that point. It's one thing to learn a functionality and determine it's not helpful to you. But to skip over learning something before moving on to the next thing isn't worth it for hardware.
A starting suggestion: figure out the overlap in the sequencers you currently have. What are the similarities/quirks between the Squarp and the Torso for euclidian stuff. What does the Oxi do that the others don't, etc.

I got a second hand Erica Synths Matrix Mixer from a friend I've bough gear before, it's something I've had my eye on for a long time, so I pounced at the chance to get one for half what a new one goes for. It just might be enough for me to delay getting a proper mixing desk. The Godfather gets here on the 26th, I'm almost salivating.
Not sure I'd ever find myself in the market one myself, but after recently watching a demo, these things would be pretty great for live sets. Quickly being able to recall all kinds of wacky hardware routings via-program change could yield amazing results.
Is there any kind of pause in sound when switching presets? Any issues with effects trails, etc.?

Yes the converter solution is bit of a clumsy thing tho but it would be great to have it go along with other gear.. You are thinking about Kenton maybe?
The MIDI is fine and I will try to control it from my Monomachine. I hope the sync is good so it not drifting away too much.. I will keep an update!
Ive never been interested in how fast the envelopes are but it is a plus ofc and cool if a good effect..
But I need to say the Neutron looks far away more interesting that let's say a Moog Mother 32 even if I like the classic Moog filter more.
I would recommend you to buy a case and insert maybe 1-2 Semi Modulars there and buy some separate Euro-Modules to play with your semis.
Nah the MS20/K-2 reverses the voltage for gates. Along with other weird stuff. There's good explanations of it on youtube.
The Expert Sleepers Disting can do the conversion. There's other Eurorack modules which can as well. From what I can tell it's pretty straightforward.
A lot of Arturia gear (including all their controllers) can send out MS-20 friendly signals as well. You have to set it that way with their config software.

First I was looking at the Behringer Neutron because it works with Eurorack and it has alot of modulation capabilities but I think it sounds kinda boring.. It is nice for drones I guess and the layout looks nice.
The K-2 just have so much character like the MS-20. No eurorack but it can just stands on its own!
Only thing I miss little bit is the mod wheel with the various way of routing it.
This was my first Behringer I have bought and I think the quality is amazing for the price! Very impressed
The K-2 can also connect to Eurorack, but you'll need Hz to Volt and S to V-trigger converters to get it to play nice with other stuff. I've never gone Eurorack myself but have a ton of semi-modular stuff and would like to get those converters just to get the K-2 to play with them more.
My friend got a Neutron and I personally love it. Insanely fast envelopes, and the delay has a lot of character. Ton of mod options as well to open it up.

Funny this thread came up here, I just bought myself a Behringer K-2
It is just feels right because Im a huge fan of the MS-20 filter. Sounds very gritty and the build quality is solid.
Highly recommend!
Recently been revisiting mine and totally agree. The external signal processor is really fun. The ring mod sounds great, etc. etc. etc.

Weird, my very first band in high school had a drummer who started playing trombone in a polka band in middle school and then switched to hi-hat, snare and metal buckets when we started our new band. Is there some kind of trombone -> drums pipeline?
Our second bass player was also a recovering trombonist.
Not sure about the trombone. I have seen a far more steady connection between ex-drummers becoming dj's though. Which makes sense. Beatmatching gives a similar satisfaction to providing a good groove in a performance.
-
Yeah started as a trombone player then quickly went to drums. Dumb metalhead teenager who could never play particularly great. Eventually had to sell kit due to living in apartments/lack of space and a place to play. Picked up a Roland SPD-30 a few years back to try and get some chops back. That has been really fun, still not that great at it though

I tried, but it's nearly impossible. To appreciate this type of music you need a kind of special sentiment for the atmosphere it creates, sometimes blissfully erratic, sometimes sombre and calm. People that have always liked pop music doesn't really have that soft spot of introspection. They might "like" it, but in a superficial way.
Or they could be a big Stockhausen fan and haven't told you.

Not even the lead vocal either, just the "there's some hoes in this house" part.

The DIY synth that sounds like a trombone is actually really cool.
Totally agreed. Sounds great on this demo as well.
They nailed the playing interface for that tone, it seems.

The watmm Anti-GAS thread

I think the Volca FM is a bad example for this sentiment. It can literally load Yamaha DX7 patches. The DX7 is one of the most omnipresent synthesizers ever. Used on thousands of recordings by just as many talented people. The Volca FM is also no harder to program than the DX7. I would certainly not pick that out of the Volca line to classify as a toy (not any of them really, tbh).
Tangentially, on toys, it's interesting contextually to consider the "G" in GAS here. Many toys are somewhat unique source sounds that aren't easily replicated. Practically everyone has a DAW now, or can get one easily. Same goes for a usable microphone. That pretty easily turns the toy into "gear". So an alternative and less-expensive way to look at GAS, I guess.
