Coming back to the topic at hand: it's great for the Deluge project to gain popularity this way, but this kind of also opens the door to a huge company whose name starts with B and rhymes with Dillinger to take the designs and fire up their own production lines.

Yeah, its a daring move. I’m pretty sure a larger company can make that hardware a lot more efficient and hence cheaper than Deluge can.

So I was able to get an aeropress for a  regular price.

While the first brew surprised me on its quality, I'm finding I need to use the same amount of beans for a single serving that I used to in the moka cup for a triple shot. So I'm unsure if I'm doing things right.

Also struggling to find the best ratio of beans/grind size/brew time/water temp for the ideal shot. At one point I was using such a fine grind size that I felt I needed an hidraulic press.

Moka cup was equally fiddly and inconsistent at firs but I had settled into a stable routine that yielded consistent results.

But with this thing cleanup is so easy that I'm gonna stick with it.

    Yup.

I have one for work. Quality of brews is good, but each one is different. IIRC coffee guru James Hoffmann shares this sentiment.

Needing an hydraulic press ? is probably nothing to worry about. If the coffee is good, that is all that matters,

My recipe is: turn the grinder a few ticks looser than for espresso, grind 7 grams, to be stored in an airtight(ish) container and to be consumed in an hour or two. Add water for 1 cup (as per the markings). Stir, press, done. Not espresso by a long shot (ha!), not Moka pot coffee but good.

war is not just fighting. it's hearts and minds, too. if the military and police no longer answer to him then putin is no longer in control

maybe zi has a horse farm for him in china

Xi would probably just disappear him if he stops being useful.

Russian police and military likely the same. To them he’s probably still useful, though.

Like I said, I really don’t see a way out of this for anyone. Maybe as a conflict so frozen the west can help the remainder of Ukraine rebuild and rearm to such a degree that it will be impossible for Russia to unfreeze it?

this whole war has been info ops

    Exactly.

That said, all the death and destruction does make it all quite a bit more complicated. I can’t come up with a single method for cleaning up this mess that is the least bit plausible.

it would be a possible quick fix to the situation, and who would miss the guy?

One would hope. He’s not the only one in the Russian military-oligarchy complex that is invested in this war, however.

What would happen if his cronies sacrifice him, being an obvious figurehead and scapegoat? Does Russia get to evacuate Ukraine without paying for the damage? And do we then all start to buy Russian gas again, making it worth it for the military and their oligarch friends to do this?

My money is still on a permanent frozen conflict like Transdniestria and Abchazia but luckily I’m terrible at betting.

I didn't know Foundation was out finally! I'll have to watch that. Loved the book.

Don’t get your hopes up. Episode one was ok, ep. 2 already dialed the Hollywood “everything must be drama and if the source material doesn’t have any we’ll invent it” shit way, way up. Haven’t gotten to ep. 3 yet.

Same with samurai swords, apparently. The fancy workmanship was out of necessity because the material they used was so bad. All that layering helped make it somewhat usable.

  8. Finished “Hello Tomorrow”. Not genius, but pleasant enough to watch: nice sets, good acting, scripts with the drama in them nicely and functionally interwoven with the rest of the plot. Would have preferred

    Spoiler

the rocket to take off with the passengers still in the elevator

but that’s pretty much the only complaint I have.

Also: episodes are only half an hour. Well done.

Sunday 10am + is Numptyville Daymare In Summer. Fuck that ?

    HELL ON EARTH!!

I think once I had some issue with my bike and perhaps a delayed train and my 6.30am early start meant that I was out past 10am on the narrow towpath of the Grand Union Canal on a sunny Sunday. What the fuck. I was like Dracula having his coffin ripped open in the mid day sun. Boaters, runners, families, picnickers, bird watchers, dope smokers, fishermen, dog walkers, dimwits, and of course the fair weather cycling gang. Like trying to smack a massive fucking square peg into a very tiny round hole.

IT WAS LIKE A FUCKING WAR ZONE!!!!

    Nah. No thanks.

Yeah, I have that, but with running.

And the packs of thoroughly incompetent Sunday cyclists acting like they own the road are the absolute worst

Some cities I've been around have decent enough cycle lanes separated from the roads unlike in London where a lot of the time it's just an extra painted lane. I hope more places adopt safer cycle paths.

    Birmingham:

Motorists are complaining a new £10m cycle highway is causing 'traffic chaos' on the roads and is barely being used

    Ooh, I stand corrected.

I prefer paths, bridle ways and tracks without traffic. Lucky I have quite a few ‘round my way. Windsor Great Park, Richmond Park, Dorney rowing Lake, Thames Path (during the week not on a weekend) and Grand Union Canal. I really don’t like cycling on roads round my way unless necessary. Or if I have to then I get up at 6am and get going. It doesn’t help that in recent years with the popularity of cycling the media has stirred it up as cyclists vs motorists. Nothing gets a radio talk show hosts phones ringing off the hook than a load of angry right wing motorists who hate anybody on two wheels. I never go cycling on a weekend past 10am. Then it’s a circus, and a circus I wish to miss. Massive fucking headache. Lucky I usually cycle during the week when I have a day off. I use to find it quite depressing how my lifetime hobby had become way too popular and every Tom, Dick and Harry was out cycling causing mayhem and aggravation. Like I said if I have to go cycling on a Sunday, I’m on the road at 6am. Winter cycling is also great because all the fair weather muppets won’t venture out.

    Or maybe not.

Replaced my 12 year old Cannondale with a bright shiny new Cannondale. Got a £1000 off it, which was the deal breaker

    Nice.
Though I hear riding a bicycle in the UK outside of London is a pretty suicidal endeavor. Is that true?

  12. Another of the greats gone: Ahmad Jamal.

I must admit I’d never bothered to check out his music, but now that it’s in obituaries everywhere it turns out “poinciana” is strangely alluring in all its borderline kitschy spareness:

ooh nice idea.. I wonder whether they'd have chemistry, I think the non-plastic approach would work better with Frusciante's 8-track type guitar stuff

Nah … Frusciante is way too limited as a musician. Working with him would be a waste of time for Tom.

I think he should join a jazz power trio with some of the finer noodle jazz musicians out there. I’m thinking the guy that plays drums with Mark Turner (Jonathan Pinson - check him out, he’s amazing) and then, why not, Mark Turner himself and then have the three of them play Warne Marsh  material.

This I would pay good money to see.
