just updated to 14.4.1 and it's fine. i know 14.4 had problems w/logic/au plug ins.. broken. but they fixed it so i jumped. .i try to stay one OS behind and likely they'll announce MacOS 15 in june.. i hope they have the Ai able to be pushed into back ground out of the way. i see windows laptops advertised with built in Ai but i don't know if it's windows thing or some 3rd party bloated bullshit that comes with windows laptops.
i'm on macOS Ventura still, 13.something. everything works fine. i never updated to 14 when i heard some initial issues with VST/audio stuff and just....haven't felt the need to otherwise. the applications i use are few.
i still watch some Windows news and they're injecting AI & ads into every corner of the OS, into Edge, into search, seemingly everything. i believe some aspects are opt out still maybe, but that doesn't seem likely to be the case for many for too long with the dollars being invested. my computer at work, even being on W10 still, i see Copilot (MS AI branding for now until they change it in 6 months) being shoved at me weekly.

rumor is that Ai will be part of next MacOS and iOS updates. fucking shrug.
yeah likely next year or upcoming soon after, sadly. Apple's working with a Chinese AI company i believe the rumor is at the moment. bad, but not too surprising. they may have some sort of opt out tho, but who knows....
with each year Linux is looking better compared to Apple/MS, but the state of Linux is getting all the more sprawling and janky for the most part. really pathetic the state of all this shit. literally millions of people working on all this stuff, can't have a basic fucking OS without selling your soul/forfeiting thousands of superior options for applications/use cases/etc.

that article is from 2015...and we all know how those reboots turned out - dog shit
I did find this more recent somewhat relevant article. was announced last year the powers that be are in fact trying to reboot it, sans Chris Carter:
https://www.thewrap.com/x-files-reboot-ryan-coogler-chris-carter-blessing/
i don’t think i’ve seen anything from Coogler but anyone other than Carter is probably a good idea. he was great in some ways but obv not the best at other things so letting the idea of an X-Files be taken on by another’s vision is potentially good, at least.
i’ve still never watched the S10+ reboot stuff, trailers looked bad and i heard 90% bad reviews so didn’t want to even try.

I don't know if the '90s are synonomous with Rap, of course rap was huge then but it's even bigger now. Rap makes up maybe 30% of the '90s "musical credit". Today, it's more like 60%. The '00s are synonomous with Rap, Nu Metal, "Dirrrty pop" and Emo, the '90s are synonomous with Rap, Grunge, Alternative Rock, R&B, Boy bands/girl groups (hate to say it), Britpop, etc.
In fact, the 80's themselves were very a suburban atmosphere in general, whereas in the 90's and even moreso today, there seems to be a trend back toward city life. Malls have become slightly less popular than they were in 1985.
Interesting. Are you saying the "big city" influence is partly what pushed alternative rock to the forefront around 1993-ish? That makes sense, because I always sensed a real "suburban" vibe about 80's arena rock. It's like teenage party music with a backdrop in a John Hughes movie, or for hanging out at the mall (although new wave seems like perfect "mall" music to me!).eah, even though rap is synonymous with the 90's, if we looked at it circa 1991, I bet there were people thinking it was another cheesy 80's thing! Especially the Will Smith/MC Hammer type pop/rap.
Grunge and rap, now that you mention it, sort of have more of that "inner city" feel about them (well, grunge is more like disaffected suburban kids, but you get the idea!). Take a movie like Singles, or Reality Bites, and that seems more like an accurate snapshot of 90's rock life.
Y
Yeah, the '80s had a very "suburban" feel to them. The '90s was kind of a mix of suburban and urban, but the '00s are a totally urban sort of atmosphere.
P.S. Do you notice a '90s atmosphere? It's hard to explain, but it's a different atmosphere than the '00s. The '90s atmosphere seems sort of cluttered, but bleak too, whereas the '00s atmosphere seems more open and bare. I'm talking primarily about inside houses and buildings.- 9

Wait, a monthly subscription for unreleased music… with community features.
You mean like Bandcamp subscriptions, which offer subscriber-only downloads and a community page? (And some extras not seen here.)
Or there’s Patreon, of course, which offers effectively the same download features.
https://cdm.link/2024/03/james-blake-is-pitching-vault-a-subscription-download-service/
Kirn kinda rips it apart here, and it's justified. it's just a new wrapper around the same idea that's already been done, but Blake's name is attached. hard pass. it's DOA.

sam seder and emma had a good analysis of this: these particular conservatives see everything through the lens of capitalism (and thus, business) and another reason why they're so competitive against one another
that wasn't as cringey as i'd expected. money's a key thing for them always for sure, but when the money runs into the supposed 'moral sphere' they're portraying (that week/month/year) then things can be a problem. i have little doubt that the fact Candace is a woman (and likely that she's a woman of color, as well) was a key problem for at least some, if not all, of them. whether or not they'd ever admit that (or if they even realize it) is another thing.

it’s already well underway outside of the Twitter grifters in the halls of Congress. R majority in the House is about to be 1 fuckin member, saw that Murkowski in the Senate isn’t discounting leaving the R party…
but the Twitter Civil War is gonna plenty funny from the outside too. i’m all for it.

new 5 track EP coming out. the label it's on, Selvamancer, seems to be new but they do have a Bandcamp where they put up digitals eventually. some gritty textures in the previews, good vibes.

Not critical at all but I'm curious so I'll ask here. Is there a hardware device that will take a midi gate in as a trigger (hopefully with the ability to filter which notes to accept) to send random modulation of selected midi cc's?
Drambo for iOS does this and it's one of the cooler tricks I've ever found. I've never seen this in hardware. Squarp Pyramid comes close but that's clock-based rather than MIDI gate.

What are autechre live performances like ?
is it more a sit down thing or do people dance ?
the physical body is left behind to a limp mass of flesh and bones as the tones trigger one's inner self to return to higher planes of existence where music is experienced in dimensions not even dreamed of
couple i've been to were mostly people standing around, some people were dancing at one of them, for parts of the set. the guys have talked about the dancing being much more common in certain parts of the world i believe.

The yanks benefit immensely from Israel's existence, it's a nice little toehold from which to play geopolitical chess in the ME, though I don't see any material benefit accruing to the US from Bibi's latest escapade in unmatched brutality. They want an Israel that keeps Iran in check, not an Israel that dents their own credibility.
Whereas russia and china have a lot to gain from the continued outrage
the existence of Israel is the main goal for sure, for exactly the reasons you mention. we're also skimming some income via numerous arms sales to Israel, which has been in hundreds of millions, if not billions, under Biden's admin...i'm sure a good chunk of that has been since October, so there's at least those 'material' benefits of the war. US has been doing this for decades all around the world of course.

They are reaping the geopolitical gains from the fallout of this brutality, so why would they support a ceasefire?
In Palestine they are well aware that no country in the world actually gives a toss about them
America is reaping plenty of rewards both monetarily and in terms of our power dominance. i’m not saying this is good, just pointing it out…lots of parties have much to gain from these conflicts. whatever side of things you’re on, if you’re cashing some checks, a lot of powerful people are happy.
and the deaths of children don’t matter to those powerful people. world keeps spinning & their influence + bank accts grow, that’s all that matters to them.

some hints of US movement towards supporting a ceasefire which might actually make some waves with Netanyahu, along with US moves to degrade his hold on power. might be the first real steps towards some negotiations/ceasefire.
Right in the nick of time.
it got vetoed this morning by Russia & China. reasoning was due to the inclusion of language requiring Hamas to release all hostages, whereas previous ceasefire resolutions (supported by most except the US) have been unconditional.

"The United States has been working in earnest with Council members over the last several weeks on a Resolution that will unequivocally support ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at securing an immediate ceasefire in Gaza as part of a hostage deal, which would get hostages released and help enable a surge in humanitarian aid," Evans said. "After many rounds of consultations with the Security Council, we will be bringing this Resolution for a vote on Friday morning," he said.

a bit of into about the world/themes for the plot (between plenty of gushing that gets boring) but some actual nice vibes from Fede about his approach for the movie. i don't think i've seen any of his movies but he seems to be invested in the Alien world in general which is a good sign.
