listened to the first 6 tracks on a drive, i like the vibe but kind of samey.

fair assessment, whole thing stays on that. probably not something i'd listen to constantly, but vibe and length are perfect for a drive imo

  3. i used to spin the 2 CD set when i was ~17 or so and reading Lovecraft for the first time. it was a good companion piece in many ways, the two are permanently tied in my mind now….reading any Lovecraft or similar stuff with talk of alien piping in distances of dream or ancient Earth, i always hear the weirder pieces of SAW II.

  4. these tracks are good. sounds like the whole album is gonna have this vibe, which i'm all for. slick  but dirty and just a bit weird/off kilter like you'd expect from her.

going on tour in the states starting this month then the summer & heading to Euro then too: https://kimaltheagordon.com/

i'd be curious to see how a live set doing this sorta stuff looks from her solo, not coming anywhere near me tho

saw some news stories saying all major social media was down (excluding X) worldwide for mobile users? One of my groupchat buddies works at Meta and said that for all of the apps down the diagnosis says 'unknown' and that this his first time seeing that.

i’m sure Meta stuff will be back up quickly. currently Mastodon is up & kicking, much nicer than Insta/etc. too…

Very nice but where’s your sequencer?!

    Screenshot2024-03-05at6_32_53AM.thumb.png.c53ef6c37a3a3ae0369487992d16b9d6.png

hidden right there in plain sight....

jkjk i'm using the Squarp Hapax most of the time right now (still dabbling with Ableton as sequencer sometimes too) which is all out of shot. the whole studio's in a general state of messiness as i'm trying to get things re-ordered but i really liked this little section when i figured out these 4 lined up like that.

i may end up using the Evolver & arp on the Pulse 2 as sub-sequencers at times like i've done in the past, those two are some of the oldest companions of mine.

Do you have uBlock origin or some other ad-blockery type thing that blocks those cookie messages .... Had to whitelist this place to stop it going freaky like that

i don’t believe, there may be some basic ones in Firefox (my current daily on desktop & mobile but i’m on iPhone so that’s just a wrapper over Safari backend…) but i get plenty of ads everywhere….i do use a VPN tho so it may be related to that.

That's odd - is that on a desktop browser, or a mobile one? Let me know so I can try and reproduce. Is anyone else having this issue?

i’ve seen it on both mobile and desktop, multiple browsers, been doing that for many months if not a year+

  9. Part 2 was really good, but dense & felt a bit too rushed overall... it felt like a fair bit of things could've been set up in Part 1.

really, really good acting moments from almost everyone, but the women here were all standouts (even the worm caretaker!)....Timothee did a strong job overall. having just rewatched the first one before this, it's really clear seeing Paul grow, and his turn towards the end is stark. script and pacing were strong, with surprisingly funny moments in some of the first half. odd to say maybe but the effects/CGI were really good, i realized at some point just how fucking much of these set pieces were pure CG but they all looked amazing and almost never took me out of the moment. the sense of scale able to be captured & communicated this well is no easy feat. definitely worth seeing in theaters imo, i caught it in IMAX and so much of the huge parts of the story really felt so substantial in ways that'll get truncated on your TV screen.

awesome costume and set stuff like the first one. just crazy cool shit. the more cerebral/trippy/existential mind/prescience/etc stuff was handled pretty well, tho seems like a fair bit was left out from the book.

    mild details/spoiler-ish

    Spoiler

walking out i was sure feeling like it's begging for a director's cut. lots of character moments and set pieces were obviously edited past what was filmed. this felt the most prominent in the first 1/3 and the last 1/3.

the worm-riding was the only CG thing that felt a bit silly/cheap/weak with the effects. it's a kind of silly idea in a way, controlling these massive creatures in that way, so i'm not sure there's a 'realistic' version of that.

Jessica's moments were SO good if a bit sparse unfortunately, and Chani's hurt and anger was very good too, Zendaya is really strong in this role. really felt it from them. Paul's turning was stark and probably would breathe better in a longer cut of things. Bene Gesserit actors were all great even with those awesome headpieces covering most, Emperor's daughter was the first time i've seen Florence Pugh but she was surprisingly good. stuff with Alia speaking to Jessica and the brief appearance from Anya TJ playing her were pretty cool, and pretty haunting.

Harkonnen stuff was all cool enough but felt a bit too starkly odd compared to everything else. this carries pretty directly from the book, but is jarring visually....maybe in a good way ultimately? idk, first impressions...

the twist redoing the scene from Part 1 of Paul's dream fighting then turning out to be Chani in Part 2 was nice. the twisting super weird idea of prescience lapping at the edges of things like this throughout the film is lovely done in a visual medium.

last scenes of Paul taking over from the Emperor were interesting and pretty well done, but again, felt rushed. Walken was maybe a weaker point in ways, some moments felt good from him as the Emperor, other felt like he was just playing Christopher Walken.

ending with Chani pissed heading off on her own was pretty strong but wasn't adequately set up maybe. she's very important in this movie of course and often represents the audience so i think there was a touch of that connection sought for with that ending, which really requires a sequel (looking likely i'm sure).

Is that you, Auxien? The tree looks like something out of a Brian Froud book.

def not me, if that'd have been me i'd have never left. such a beautiful & weird tree. random photo found via Tumblr. definitely has those vibes you're talking about, just missing some little strange creatures...

Got to visit this tree on my trip to Wales this past October.

When I visited, nobody was around so I spent some time with the tree and went into the church to sign the guestbook. As I was doing so, a female pastor came to lock up the church and was startled to find me. We had a lovely conversation and she gave me another tour of the tree with some of her insights. One of the highlights of the trip for sure. She also showed me a part of the ancient branch that unmistakably resembles the head of a dragon (a bit of national pride, as the dragon is the centerpiece of the welsh flag 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 ).
Pretty cool how the old headstones were surrounding it.

that Wikipedia pronunciation of the place is not what i was expecting, love it. lovely tree...can sure see the dragon hints there

  11. i just rewatched the first Dune on Thursday, going to watch 2 today....i don't think Zimmer's general lack of subtlety is a bad thing for these fillms guys....did y'all have your eyes open during them?

    Dune-014.jpg Dune-078.jpg Dune-235.jpg Dune-145.jpg

    https://screenmusings.org/movie/blu-ray/Dune/

don't get me wrong, i love me some subtlety and i'm not in love with Zimmer, but that bombast and heavy drama he often brings to films is very much warranted here in these films about space jesus, thousand year long bloodline breeding by space witches, about control of drugs made by giant worms that morph humans over centuries into spacetime-warping freaks. not a ton of subtlety needed here.... i'm sure other soundtrackers could've done some cool shit that would've been more interesting but Villeneuve chose him for a reason i'm quite sure. especially with the budget he surely spent on Zimmer (Zimmer's team, really...) he could've got anyone on the planet to soundtrack the films. he chose Zimmer for a reason. twice.

iirc BR2049 had some great soft/subtle layers and moments in it, but Zimmer didn't do that work all on his own

  14. she's been dropping stuff on Bandcamp regularly if y'all ain't following her there, not all is for me but a lot of it is dope, may stock up on a few for tomorrow for Bandcamp Friday

always varied, always a bit over the edge in the best of ways. i'm getting bits of S Olbricht & Rezzett vibes from these latest small releases, feels like her sound is 'maturing' as limiting as that term feels.

yeah really soured on them with all their shit, they’re well up their own asses these days. i never check the site or buy anything through them…i still follow on insta and see a new ‘exclusive’ tape almost every fuckin day, it’s really boring. if everything is special/essential/whatever then none of it really is.
