  1. I saw Salad Fingers at some point in highschool and loved it. Firth prominently displayed the music credits at the end (BOC - Beware The Friendly Stranger) which led me to check out mhtrtc and geogaddi and I loved those albums. Firth's cartoons also had a lot of aphex twin in them so I checked him out and liked it, eventually checked out the warp records site (the old boxy one) and probably the first autechre track I heard was LCC which was their most recent album at the time.

I clicked through a bunch of their tracks and thought it was weird and didn't really like it but I checked out samples of a whole bunch of tracks and rpeg was probably the first track that really got its hooks into me (although I hated everything after the first minute or two at the time). Then I think it was clipper/eutow and from there I just gradually started clicking with more of their tracks.

So yeah, it's all thanks to some weird crazy flash animator posting his insanity onto newgrounds.

  2. Hey my thread from almost 7 years ago! I will comb through here and check out what you guys posted recently.

Here's a few off the top of my head that bear at least some resemblance to Autechre. In no particular order (some of you will be very familiar with some of these). Tried to only post ones I didn't find years ago from this thread.

  3. if the reproduction environment imposes significant distortion as to degrade the perceived response (freq/time-domain), or the ambient noise floor is high, etc etc ... then of course headphones can function as a net benefit. however issues localized to your environment do not allow for a catch-all generalization for all reproduction systems across all acoustical spaces. it's the equivalent of writing off the performance or abilities all automobiles based on your experience with one particular model who may or may not have even be operating within the confines of the deigned envelope in the first place.

distinguishing details of panning does not imply accurate stereo imaging, as with speakers within a bounded space of which the pertinent signals destructive to imagine are mitigated.

Alright, I've conceded that I may have misused the term stereo imaging. And yeah I'm sure if you are a sound engineer it's possible to get the acoustics, eq and speakers all set up properly to have a perfect sound quality, but I think it's tough to argue that headphones aren't a way easier path to near-perfect sound quality. I can spend like $300 on some Sennheiser cans and basically no time at all and have professional sound quality, but to do it with speakers requires more than simply money. You need a quiet environment, good acoustics, expensive speakers, proper positioning and all sorts of other stuff. Plus the sound will only be 100% perfect while you're looking dead on at the speakers. If you turn your head the sound quality will be slightly different. Headphones don't really have this problem.

  4.

So much of the detail and stereo imaging is lost using speakers.

stereo imaging isn't "lost using speakers" nor is it "gained" by use of headphones. conclusion is likely a result of distortion imposed by the listening environment, not necessarily an error within the source material.

I might not be using the right terminology but the stereo aspect and the details about pan etc are much more pronounced on headphones. You can't even argue that point. Speakers might allow better bass quality overall but only if they are blasting super loud. Headphones will give you a clearer sound and you'll be able to distinguish specifics better.

  5. I think the question was asked to them in their AMA here but I don't recall the answer.

Anyways yeah I am pretty sure Ae music works way better on headphones than on speakers. So much of the detail and stereo imaging is lost using speakers.

What's a day in the life of Ae?

Any interesting stuff you can say about any of these tracks? Theme of sudden roundabout, iera, cfern, nuane, latent quarter, 777, netlon sentinel, perlence, they're a few of my faves.

Can you name my oxygen 49?

    Space, deep sea or Antarctic?

    Android or iOS?

Cheers, thanks again for this q&a session, it's been a great show!

    will get to this tmoro

You broke my heart by not delivering, Rob. I'm going to run away and cry now.
