  1. The problem is that enjoying music just isn't enough anymore, ZoeB. WATMM these days is far more about image then feeling. Its the definition of following your brain vs your heart.

Aphex twin can put out the shittiest tracks ever after a ragga jungle monstrousity and people will worship it like he's the god of poo, reguardless of how many heart wrenching psycho-acoustic ballads BT might put out, in whatever surround sound configuration you like, with 3D music videos, and 110 piece orchestras. If it doesn't fit the WATMM visionary of sitting around in a incomplete skyscraper, listening to Com Truise, and making fun of Skrillex, you are simply not a member of us. Even if Skrillex and BT do the exact same thing and love the same music, they are not one of us, we decide that.

The best thing to do in situations like these is to check your ego in at the door when you log into WATMM and assume your persona. Swallow your pride, and put on the WATMM act. Of course Aphex is the best artist this century. Of course Autectre is making better music now then their analog days. Of course Squarepusher still is the daddy. We are not aging hipsters, we are refined critics and we know everything sucks, we've been trying to tell ourselves and eachother that for years. Just up the post count a bit, tell a few people to read the rules, and put squarepushers' circle vacuum tracks back on. They are ahead of their time, and so are we.

  2. BT has more skills then most of the people on WATMM. BT thinks he's IDM and probably is but the IDM community hasen't allowed him in the front door yet. BT graduated from Berkley, so the the IDM community thinks he believes he is better then everyone else. BT probably is also friends with Skrillex and was nominated for a Grammy last year, but didn't win, as Skrillex did.

/me enjoys the next 5-10 pages of hate

  3. people who think Rephlex is the end all of inventive beat programming are seriously fucking tunnel visioned out.

i cannot believe that someone who is a professional mastering engineer thinks this, it calls into question Pissflaps claim that he is one.

practically every song on Terminal 11's 'additions to arsenal' has more inventive, original and creative beat programming than anything Steinvord has done

to me inventive means unique and pleasurable, not rehashing the same shit over and over again, even if you are tom Jenkinson or Aphex twin.

    Mike is the man.

  4. yesterday I let my 5-month old daughter bang around on the keyboard while I recorded for about 10 mins. I picked out the bits that I liked and cleaned them up and stored them away. really great results and definitely a go-to method in the future to have a bank of melodies to spark ideas.

I was gonna crack a joke about copyright infringement, but then I was thinking...

It might be a cool project to sample everything on an album from your daughter banging on stuff... melodies, drums, etc, then piece it all together in audio, warp, add fx, etc.

  5. I haven't heard this album yet, but I think this thread shows to me that IDM fans are the hardest to please.

The only thing I know about this guy is that he makes Analord style music that people think sounded a lot like Aphex back in the day (so much so that he was accused of being Aphex a few times). You'd think we'd be his target audience.

  6. oh and this is probably common knowledge but i seem to hear a lot of less-than-interesting melodies from people who have never realized that it's ok to play the same note more than once in a row. if you started on guitar you already know that, i'm sure, but man there are a lot of electronic musicians that just frantically put notes all over their piano rolls and end up with these disorienting and noodly melodies that can't seem to actually finish saying anything before hey look at that cat

    +1

  7. I bought some breakfast this morning, the total was 3.09. In my wallet I had a 10 dollar bill, a 5 dollar bill, and 3 ones. Since I couldn't pay for it with my ones, I used a 5 dollar bill and I got 91 cents back in change.

I told the lady that she owed me another dollar, but insisted that I gave her all ones. I relooked at my wallet and had the 10 and the 3 ones. I asked her if she was sure, and she opened the cash register, pulled out 2 ones, and was like "Yes you gave me these"

By then a line was forming behind me giving me the dirty eye. So I left.

Basically I gave someone a dollar today for nothing :(

  8. words!

oh yeah i dont doubt i will have a vast mountain of wealth by the time i'm through with school, it's just gonna cost a LOT.

but thanks for the advice! that's the plan so far, gonna finish up undergrad with either a history or art history degree, then do grad school for either art history or archaeology. so there are options. like yelling IT BELONGS IN A MUSEUM all the time. on the street. wearing plastic bags for shoes.

"she's got a phd in archaelogy" they'll say as they throw change in my cup.

i am not seriously this fatalistic im just tired and rambly.

Seems like in your posts you can talk the talk when it comes to 3d graphics and programming, why would you ever waste years on a degree that will amount to nothing financially when you can do something like software and enjoy history in your spare time?

  9. My neighbours are voyeuristic assholes

they use my illness to justify their actions-paranoid schizophrenic

    lol, is this true?

I had a neighbor that was CONVINCED that my roomates and I were living with her ex and we were harboring his existence("There is a MAN, living in your HOUSE and he is HARASSING ME!"). Supposedly he would harrass her at night by throwing things on the roof. (total load of shit crazy lady hearing things). She went so far as to track down my roomate's girlfriends liscense plate to her mother because she beleived it was the car that was transporting this man to our house every night. I even had cops come to the door sometimes trying to ask for the guy (some old ulgy bald dude that obviously didn't live with a bunch of 20-something young men). I would often see cop cars just sitting outside my house when I came home because she probably called them every single night. After a few months she wrote a long winded letter to our landlords trying to convince them we were hiding this man in their house. We had a meeting and explained how she was straight up batshit insane. It eventually fizzled out but I think she is still crazy.

Thats completely nuts! If something like this were to happen to me, I'd never assume I had a crazy neighbor. How did you figure out this neighbor was responsible for the cops showing up etc? Did she ever come over and confront you?

  10. never done rbgs, but arenas are basically ruined for people just getting into it. wow is now more about gear than ever, and i find that pvping casually is usually just frustrating.

no one is responding to my wow commentary :(

You can grind a full set of pvp gear with honor, and you don't even need to fight anyone if you wait for an AV call to arms.

Thing is tho, if you lose a ton in arena, your MMR will go down and eventually you will be fighting people with the same skill/armor as you, it just might take about 10 loses in a row until it starts working how it should. But at that point it doesn't matter, all you need to do is win 8 arenas per week to reach your conquest cap.
