  1. Well after 7 days in a row treating 40-odd patients daily without any available PPE I unsurprisingly came down with coronavirus symptoms on Monday.

All feels a bit weird at home as my wife (who also works in the NHS) has been evacuated to a hotel so she can continue to work. Means I spend the day pottering around in a dressing gown listening to zoviet france or the NTS sessions.

I've felt much worse than this with flu before, but I'm aware it's only day 3...

  2. Right so you would identify those patients as priority and then put people with only Covid19 lower down on the totem pole. But after identifying their existing comorbidity factors and treating their Covid19 you can direct them to the care facilities more appropriately right?
Well yeah, if they recover they will continue to have their other conditions managed in the same way they have been. If any new conditions are identified during their time as an inpatient there'll be a referral to the relevant area after they're discharged.

I don't work ICU but there's no 'totem pole' as such. At the moment people are sedated and ventilated if they reach a certain point of acute respiratory distress. When the ventilators run out as seen in Italy it will be the case that younger, healthier people will be given priority.

  3. Wouldn’t you want to know what to treat? Covid19 exacerbated existing conditions, but surely it’s important to treat those conditions. As I understand it, the mortality rate for covid19 is like 2%, so you’d want to go after the other factors first surely?
That's not how it works - these are almost always long-term conditions that have already been identified and are being treated (although there's also no real treatment for 'being old').

What happens is (for example) someone presents with respiratory difficulty, swabbed and test positive for Covid, CT shows bilateral interstitial pneumonia. They also have a history of heart failure and diabetes - these are already being managed and have been for the last few years.

They're in a high risk group, may need ventilation, and may die. There's no magic bullet that will cure their diabetes or heart issues, all the medical team can do is try and keep them alive long enough for their body to recover from the pneumonia.

  4. As a follow up, I'd be the first to argue that our hospitals have been woefully underfunded over the last 10 years here in the UK, but there's no way you could build in the sort of redundancy that would cope with the critical care surge they've seen in Italy, for example.

  5. Arguing EXACTLY what kills people who have covid-19 is not entirely useful at the moment. The general progression is pretty well understood:

Covid-19 damages lungs, both directly and leaving them more prone to follow-up bacterial infection.

This in turn increases the likelihood of bilateral interstitial pneumonia, this is more likely to develop in older people or people with co-morbidities (especially lung or cardiac issues, also obesity)

This cohort of patients are also less likely to be able to fight off pneumonia. Eventual result for the most unwell is unfortunately organ failure and death.

At my hospital, the first fatalities are coming through, they have all had severe co-morbidities so far. Could you argue that their stage 4 cancer killed them rather than the pneumonia? Maybe, but the Covid infection is definitely the reason they died this weekend.

  6. I'm guessing the current situation will cause all sorts of fuckery with getting 2 (physical?) albums out, but can't see any problems with onesix sets going up on the bleepstore. I think it's definitely time for a good chunk of new autechre.

  7. Yeah I remember from the IDM list days he was always ranting about something or other, it was pretty indiscriminate. Always seemed angry at other people getting successful - I reckon him calming down a bit probably coincided with the time he actually started making decent music.

Still, reckon he owes Scanner a bit of an apology after reading that blog post.

  8. just came to say i'm absolutely loving the first two tracks on this. they went from "oh that's too sweet" to "oh pretty good in context" to "oh this is like an unsinkable raft. i can poke no holes in it. structurally exceptional and i hear them melodies and little counter point things in my head for days and enjoy it"

    this record gonna age well.

it is what it is and i'm digging it. it's enjoyable in a different way for me. it's not go plastic of course but wtf is? go plastic is on a throne atop kingfuck mountain.

Hitsonu has actually grown on me a bit, if I'm in a hyperactive Yoshi's Island kind of mood. Not sure I'd call it a good track but it is kind of fun.

Oberlove though... I swear it gets worse with each listen. It's a chocolate and cheese combination for me.

Still initial disappointment aside chuck the best tracks from this in with the NTS mix and you've got a good 80 minutes of decent stuff.

  9. On the topic of other SP albums I gave Damogen another go. There's a couple of decent tracks on there but goddamn there's some real shockers too. Not keen on the production choices either.

Good news is that after the new one I can harvest enough tracks from the last 4 LPs to make one pretty decent comp I reckon.

  10. If you turn it off after track 3.

Edit: Okay, "Vic Acid" and "Rebus" are alright as well. But inbetween that ...
Crazy talk... No love for papalon at least?

Still my favourite SP album is Rotted One Note so what do I know?
  11. Awful, factually incorrect review. This album sounds sonically like last two. Also calls Ultravisitor a rare misstep lolll.

Yeah no idea where he's hearing hard normal daddy in there.

After a few listens, I think I'll have to file this one as another Pusher LP that just isn't for me. Some good tracks in there but some that I find strangely unpleasant to listen to.

Had a weird 'moment of clarity' a couple of albums back. Trying to 'get' unreal square, focusing intently, probably stroking my chin, desperately trying to find anything likeable about it whatsoever. Then just realising 'wait, this song sucks lol' . I've had a pretty low tolerance for his later stuff ever since I guess.
  12. Bit deflated on first listen.
All the pre release stuff I liked and the NTS mix was great, but that slight...naffness that's crept into his stuff since ultravisitor is still there on quite a few tracks, first 2 especially are pretty weak.

  13. Some interesting points in there, especially about the obsessions of parts of the left proving massively unpopular to the population as a whole.

He does generalise about the 'working class' a bit much though (admittedly when I'm out with the proles everyone's obsessed with the smash film 'Left Behind', he nailed it there.)
