  1. Reading Slaughter House Five again, last time i read it i was in junior high so im definitely picking up a lot more than my first first read. Completely forgot what the unifying point of the book is, it sometimes seems like there is no point

I'm reading that for the first time. I'm trying to read books in their original languages now, but I already buy music, videogames, technology and basically everything online, so it's a pain in the ass that I have to pay p&p and wait for books to arrive too.

Anyways, I'm reading it in spanish. I don't like reading translations, but I don't think much will be lost in it

  2. I really can't agree with the bad platformer aspect either - For me a platforms success is reliant on atmosphere and more importantly character control, and the feel of immediacy in controlling the wee guy is spot on. If I over/undershoot a jump I always feel that it's my fault rather than dodgy play mechanics, and the character of each region of the game world is distinct and perfectly rounded.

A question (not sure if I can ask this without the answer being a spoiler) - do you get taught the language that's throughout the world or do you have to do it by deduction (ie lots of similar characters might therefore lead to an 'e' character). Also I've got to a couple of treasure chests that seem completely out of reach - do you get an upgrade to your jumping (a la metroidvania type games) of are there secret routes in order to get there ?

There's a Rosetta stone for the vocabulary, but the you'll only get the clue if you're familiar with a certain English saying (poor puzzle design, as it only works witih players that have grown within an specific cultural context). And no, you don't get upgrades to your jumping.

Also you just reminded me of another poor design choice: most of the time you don't know if you're not supposed to be able to reach some items, or if you just have to work it out; you don't know if you can already reach it with what you have, or if you have to keep exploring. That's just plain bad design.

  3. I didn't like Fez because it was a bad platformer and a bad puzzle game. I was expecting more "self-contained" puzzles, puzzles that implied problem-solving: here are your resources, here's your objective, solve that shit, which is the fun thing about puzzles. But Fez is not about problem solving apart from a few rooms, it relies a lot on cryptic messages and obsesively looking for clues. The puzzles were not well designed imo.

I played this when it first came out and I can't give you a better review as I don't remember it that well

  4. probably my first order from WARP that didn't come with anything. Hell, I used to get goodies with the promos WARP sent me back in the day - and I didn't even request the promos!

Lucky you then, I started buying stuff from Bleep like 3 years ago and never got anything from them

  5.

I think the only NIN I've ever heard is The Downward Spiral and Fixed/Broken EPs. I've been listening to those consistently for years, but I never got around to listening the rest of his stuff.

Interesting... so what's your take on this new single given that you haven't heard any new nin since tds? (that's so hard to believe lol)... part of me is curious if ive just gotten so used to the blandness of his recent output, that im being overly critical of it when i hear it...

I don't have much to say tbh, I don't really like this track. It's a mix of typical industrial beats, melodies and effects straight off any top40 dancefloor song (like that benny bennassi-like melody that starts at 1:38, lol'd at that) and way-too-loud overused "AAAAAAAAH" choruses to make it more epic or something I guess. I like the bridge, guitar breakdown included, from 2:45 to 3:20; probably because it didn't have Reznor's uninspired lyrics and the annoying chorus on top It goes on for too long, too. Really boring, 4/10 would not listen to again
