Wow, I just watched this tonight. I won a criterion version of this gem for 20$ which is sweet since its out of print. I've never seen it before and it was INCREDIBLE! :o

exxxxcellent flick. Actually I'm on a bit of a Cronenberg frenzy at the mo', I watch one of his every week, starting last week with the fly, and this week is videodrome (skipping scanners cos I've seen it too much).

Huzzah for successful film makers who never went to film school.

Coincidentally, I saw this for the first time at the weekend, and I also thought it was fantastic. Irons performance really is that good, and I loved the way it was shot so clinically. Cronenberg is the don - Videodrome is also great, but is a bit more WTFBQB!!??!

Anyway, yay for Cronenberg. Haven't seen History of Violence yet.

oh man.. history o' violence was great, and I'm a HUGE cronenberg fan. not many visceral WTF? kinda moments in this one, (not like, say... Naked Lunch) but there is plenty to enjoy, and definitely some gore.. as if cronenberg could make a movie without some gobbity bits of flesh somewhere in there ;)

I thought the performances were really good. William Hurt makes an awesome gangster!

Yeah I think you've just convinced me to see this sooner rather than laters.

I have no idea how they'd do it, but Dead Ringers is being remade as a series by HBO.

Cronenberg will apparently direct the pilot and exec produce the series.

I thought it already had been done? Could be wrong though.

if you like it, Eastern Promises is arguably better (not the first person here to say that)

I totally agree. As a matter of fact, I think I'll watch it tonight.

yeah I'm only a mild cronenberg fan - I felt rather meh about Crash, Existenz, and Naked Lunch (though wouldn't mind revisiting all three), but liked The Fly and Eastern Promises. I also remember liking Cronenberg's acting, in the few films I've seen him in (Nightbreed and something else). Haven't seen Dead Ringers though, would like to. I remember it really disturbed my mom when she saw it.

Ah yeah, I've been wanting to see this film for ages. I've enjoyed Cronenberg's other stuff, might have to go looking for it in town

Coming up to four years later, still not seen this film. What a failure.

Eastern Promises is one of the only Cronenberg movies i found to be really boring. the whole sub plot with naomi watts and the baby was just cringe city for me, but people seem to love it so don't listen to me :). I loved dead ringers though.

i never got into his movie of Naked Lunch but i find Crash to be one of the most impressive movies ever made. If only for it's extreme determination to carry across a non existent sexual subculture. if the movie's purpose was that it succeeded greatly. it is a really uncomfortable movie with questionable dialogue though, i highly recommend re watching it regardless of that. Existenz also

Guest my usernames always really suck

Why do directors get most of the creative credit for films in the public's eye when it's actually the writers who made these movies possible in the first place?

interpretive creativity? the movie is based on the novel Twins which is based on real people (Stewart and Cyril Marcus) so there are a few influences to consider for credit

you could be right, I think it gets extra points for concerning the Russian mafia, which is something you don't often see in films (I'm hoping for similar novelty factor when I bring my saga of shanghainese mafia and prostitution rings to the big screen, lol). Either that or it just gets extra points for Viggo Mortgensen naked wrestling.
