JUNE 9--A telephone prankster posing as a sprinkler company employee caused havoc Saturday morning at an Arkansas Holiday Inn when he convinced an employee to set off the hotel's fire alarm, smash windows, shut down electricity, and break a sprinkler head that flooded the building lobby. The bizarre incident is detailed in a report prepared by the Conway Police Department, which, as seen below, photographed the aftermath of the June 6 incident. According to police, Holiday Inn employee Christina Bergmann was at the front desk early Saturday when a male caller "identified himself as an employee of Grennel Fire Sprinkler service." The man told Bergmann that there was a problem with the hotel's fire sprinklers and that she "needed to pull the fire alarm to reset them," cops reported. "Bergmann proceeded to pull the fire alarm at this point, causing the audible alarm." Bergmann, aided by a hotel guest, would subsequently follow a series of directions from the caller that would result in about $50,000 in damages to the hotel's windows, carpets and electrical system. Hotel guests, who were evacuated during the incident, were allowed back into the Holiday Inn after police and fire officials determined that the caller was an imposter. Since a similar prank call was made to a Holiday Inn in Little Rock, Conway cops alerted fellow Arkansas law enforcement officials that "more of these calls could be coming in," according to the police report. Rusty Brown, the Holiday Inn guest who helped Bergmann follow the prankster's instructions, told TSG he was "an innocent bystander and got involved in domestic terrorism." Bown, 36, remarked that there was "absolute panic in that hotel," adding that, "all I did was make it worse. I'm not proud of breaking windows. It is very disheartening."

I can sort of understand pulling a fire alarm (even though I wouldn't do it unless instructed by someone in person), but breaking windows? What the hell would the point of that be...

you all laugh now, but the boy who cries wolf will do it a few more times, then one night hundreds of people will die in a hotel fire because someone will be afraid of falling victim to a prank

and maybe there was a plan to set the hotel to fire and one of the insiders made the "prank" call to save everyone inside

juss sayin

yes, ma'am, your computer has a virus. you'll need to know about the DELINIATE TREE command, known to us tech-sorts as "deltree"...

seriously, if i worked at a motel and someone called telling me to pull the alarm and break windows, i'd at least check with my manager first. but, then again, maybe that's why i'm not working the graveyard shift at holiday inn -- i'm not a dumbass.

apologies to any dumbasses/motel graveyard shift workers in thread

I read about a slightly similair incident with a McDonald's employee who forced a costumer to strip naked and then locked the costumer in a bathroom or something because the employee was convinced by a prank caller that the costumer was a criminal and the caller was a police officer.

Fucked up shit.

have you heard about the bizarre series of 'prank' calls where a man posing as a police detective ordered a manager of a department store over the phone to perform strip searches on their employees , apparabtly this man acting on the orders of an authority figure (milgram experiment esque) felt it ok to strip his employees naked and search them.

I don't think this is the same incident but it is similar http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseacti...ideoid=58151392. *update* Looks like they've made it private and you need to be logged in with a myspace account to 'hear' the video. I imagine that makes this link useless for most people here.

Here's another similar alternative where this guy tries to convince a hotel guest that her room has a 'ghost leak' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-t9eFM6vDZc

*another update* The site that these calls came from, http://pranknet.org/ now redirects to google. Perhaps these guys were involved in the incident at Arkansas Holiday Inn and the site has been taken down
