A VBS Documentary on Issei Sagawa

On the afternoon of June 13, 1981, a Japanese man named Issei Sagawa walked to the Bois de Boulogne, a park on the outskirts of Paris, carrying two suitcases. The contents of those suitcases, to the lament of a nearby jogger, was the dismembered body of a fellow student – a Dutch woman named Renée Hartevelt, whom Sagawa had shot three days prior and had spent the days since eating various parts of her body.

He was soon arrested. According to reports, Issei uttered, “I killed her to eat her flesh,” when they raided his home, whereupon they found bits of Renne still in his fridge.

Sagawa was declared insane and unfit for trial and was institutionalized in Paris. His incarceration was to be short, however, as the French public soon grew weary of their hard-earned francs going to support this evil woman-eater, and Issei was promptly deported. Herein followed a bizarre and seemingly too convenient set of legal loopholes and psychiatric reports that led doctors in Japan declaring him “sane, but evil.”

On August 12, 1986, Sagawa checked himself out of Tokyo’s Matsuzawa Psychiatric hospital, and has been a free man ever since.

This is where the real story begins. VBS met up with him to find out what he’s been up to in the 30 years since.

fffuuu ...that was some disturbing stuff, even though i managed to kind of look away when they showed the gory stuff.

they should've left that out of the film imo ..im interested in his story, not to look at his mutilated victims.

the part where he talks about not knowing what an erection was, and letting his dog "lick it off"

yeah...i think i can pinpoint where it started to go very wrong.

The humouring of what he did through the literature, art and film is what I'm struggling with, the lack of his remorse and the other peoples lack of respect. The whole thing has left me baffled. I really don't give a fuck that he is a mental retard, he should never of been let out of the mental shop.

i was actually sent stills of that manga from a friend who thought it was hilarious. that is what's more fucked up than the man himself.

Maybe if I didn't know the context or truth behind the manga i might give a 'ha that's sick shit' sorta thing, but seeing it here was just like WFT, how could this be allowed to happen? Maybe I'm just over sensitive. It's obviously all meant to shock, but still?

i saw a documentary about him years ago. it's amazing that he's made a career out of murder, basically. the way he's able to rationalize everything, even his own desire to die seems like he's satisfying a primal urge rather than seeing any kind of ethical or moral balance. he's the definition of an evil person.

yeah, i saw this and was struck by the utter lack of remorse, even pride this guy had in what he did. It's almost as if he did it to get his foot in the door to a writing career, the same way a young photojournalist goes to a warzone to make a name for himself.

That porn flick they made takes the cake, though - truly perverted in the strongest sense of the word.

Maybe he's just different?

Naturally you treat fire and water differently. It's inherent to their differentness. Still, it's a matter of difference. He's a donkey esophagus and we are Soldiers. We all exist in our own right. You cast your judgments on shoes and inert, unconscious matter, like hair. What makes you think your judgments about people are accurate if you're so superficial? What makes you think you see anything?

P.S. This is not an attack, it's a commentary.

Pardon me while I scrub clean my dick.

show me where i said that. where anyone said that.

or is this your own opinion and not a feeble-minded attempt at vitriolic sarcasm?

He made the assumption that because something is "just different," as I mentioned, it is equal. "Just" operates as a softener. I was sort of protecting this butt-eating guy. But a different person, like a different element, requires evokes reactions. It's strange that we need either to come to a consensus or prove right our stance about whether this guy needs to be treated the same or differently. Both will happen anyway.

um, what? he's different in the sense that he's got severe psychological problems which led to him acting on an impulse that can be called perverted, psychotic, etc. and then a small part of society reacted in a way that seems to feed that impulse, almost celebrate it. and his reaction to this seems without any remorse, and completely self absorbed. i don't see how it can be construed as anything other than evil, unless you're just knee jerking to the word "evil", but i think in this case it's the perfect word.

but no, you're right, he's just sick, we should coddle people like this and try to understand them.

I read the vice magazine interview with Sagawa a year or so ago and I found that pretty disturbing, purely because of the matter of fact way he talks of his crimes and desires.Im sure Vice has it in the archives..

Do you still have these cannibalistic urges?

Oh yes, definitely. The desire to eat people becomes so intense around June, when women start wearing less and showing more skin. Just today, I saw a girl with a really nice derrière on my way to the train station. When I see things like that, I think about wanting to eat someone again before I die. So yes, I do still harbor these desires, and I specifically want to eat a Japanese woman this time. I think either sukiyaki or shabu shabu [lightly boiled thin slices] is the best way to go in order to really savor the natural flavor of the meat. Can you please call for people who would willingly be eaten by me in your magazine? There’s one condition, though: They have to be young, beautiful women.

The man knows what he wants.

I found watching that really unsettling

He's quite a sick fuck. The sorta things that Japan publish though, like some of the books and tv skits are quite fucked up. You can't get away with it everywhere.
