Midi Controlled Electric Piano

I have not a damn clue how to work any of this stuff but I want to learn to play Piano, so I'm going to buy a full sized 88 key midi controller with velocity sensing

if i do this would this allow me to hook it up to my computer using usb or something, download a program with some piano samples and maybe like synth patches or something, twiddle around with the textures and frequencies in the program, then play the piano like a normal one?

or do i need more equipment

If you've got the money I highly recommend the fantastic Pianoteq for making yer piano sounds. It works as both a VSTi and as a standalone application, and being physically modelled it allows every parameter to be tweaked from the size of the piano, the mic positions, lid position (etc. etc.) and has a tiny download size (~30mb)
