Ha. Bought and acquired this album several times only to find out it is supposed to sound like that (distorted cassette). Quite funny. Once you know, it's not a problem. Quite nice in fact.

Also the Roland R8 drum machine which features on all the older sounding SAW85-92 tracks came out in 1989. I don't think there's anything from 85 on there, the only track could be i, so I reckon 87-92 (being charitable) or 89-92 is closer to the mark. I asked him which track was from 85 once and he said Green Calx -which has an R8 (89) and samples robocop (87). But honestly who cares, it's one of the greatest albums ever made, and the whole 85 thing was a good ruse to bolster his mythology. job well done ;)

No 808 at all?

all the 808 sounds on the record are from the r8

Correct.

This was what I was thinking about... many of Rich's early works did indeed
make use of some faily 'big-name' sounds... (but he has never owned an
808... only a Roland R-8 (with an 808/909 card)...
Nice machines (for digital)...

He definately uses the R8. I've owned both for years and there are many
sounds (internals) used on SAW1, not to mention alot of the 808 sounds he
uses sound like the ones on the 'Electronic' card(pitched higher and
lower than the 'real' 808s-even if he played with the knobs inside).
I just wanted to bring to life the fact that the dates on SAW1 seem
like a little farfetched.

Thats his brothers grave....or so he claims. Rich is full of shit most
of the time ....you have to filter everything he says in interviews.
Like that he says he makes his own synths.... RUBBISH. He uses a Studio
440, an akai sampler, EMS Synthi and an R8. Oh yeah and a DX100. My and
my friends have been able to figure this out from live shows, pics and
by listening to the patches off his records.
Also he said that he wasn't going to play live again and he is now.
Even the title of Saw 85-92 is a bit of a lie because most of the gear
he was using on that record didn;t come out until 87 and 88.
So when he says he's going to quit recording ...take it with a grain of
salt. He'll either never stop or record under another moniker like
Purple Calix, Stinky Window or aaa fu XXX
ROB :)!!!!!!!!!

Ah, nice to read those old posts... seems like a million years ago...

Perhaps 85 is when Richard considered himself a musician and made his first music... even though it never exactly ended up on 85-92.

I tend to agree the title was more myth-establishing more than anything, especially considering what he's said in the Syrobonkers interview about getting his first synths, etc.

It's probably best to keep a pinch of salt, a bowl of sugar, some pepper and vinegar also...in fact, all condiments possible to have to hand to sweeten / sour whatever truths Aphex says. Or just listen to the tunes and be damned with how it's made...

Maybe he's calendar dyslexic

Tempted to read this novel of yours ...

I wouldn't, the reviews are pretty average
