I've noticed that as well. it's like the opposite of having helpful wikipedia links come up as top search results on a lot of subjects. and with the company going public they're awash with more money than ever.

of course it's not as obviously bad as the twitter cesspool but reddit - in particular, getting your opinions from reddit - is actively making the world a dumber place. it's a massive echo chamber for the noncommittal centrist/"liberal" hivemind that understands nothing except optics. the upvote/downvote system practically guarantees this outcome. I give some credit to people who were redditors in their teens or early 20s but have moved on and become wiser, but there's always the next generation of idiots that think they're making a difference in the world while updooting celebrity-fellating content or GME go brrr or whatever other dumb inconsequential bandwagon shit is the order of the day. people argued with me when I said the antiwork 'movement' on there was built on a foundation of nothing and would go nowhere.

I always have a laugh when they assume just because the platform has a certain belief this is general opinion .

I kind of don’t like him. He has this personality where he can talk about taking a shit and still make it sound like the universe is collapsing. I get that these science evangelicals are needed to bring scientific news to the layperson but after a while he is a little overboard with everything

what is the point of this personal rambling? idk. if there's a point i guess it's something like this: if i was 16 today i could make all these "discoveries" in like 5 minutes online. i could go to wiki and just click away, enter some words into youtube and listen to nin > mbm > boc > autechre. this would be free and i could just do it on my phone. i could do this while simultaneously replying to texts and then literally forget i even did this by the end of the week after i've seen like a million other things on my stupid phone

But there is also an illusion to this. You have the illusion of knowing it all. Once you manually travel to different countries it becomes very obvious that „all information at your fingertips“ does withhold so much you have never seen until you really physically travel to other places.

you can still go to some obscure festival in some foreign country and get lost at some great local underground party and still find music you will never find online as you didn’t even known what to look for. I do this on a regular basis and it’s nothing like listening to Apple Music on random

When elections start or international conflicts raise with US involved you could see Facebook or other social media platforms switching into propaganda mode bombarding everyone with these topics. TikTok is a bit smarter. You can completely ignore political topics if you wish but you can also go down several rabbit holes. I think the us has limited influence to where these rabbit holes actually lead

They're not banning tiktok cause it's dumb or cause of Chinese interest are they. I work in edu and see a) a lot of kids ruining their lives on social media but b) it's a threat to the status quo so ultimately I'm alright with it.

The last half year has laid it all out there.

YouTube shorts and instagram reels still offer the same functionality. It’s just successful lobbying by zuck and google as they are not able to beat the platform anymore

It’s pretty wild how conservatives brand themselves as a revolutionary movement currently. Never heard of this before. I wonder how this even works. Not many people are able to provide for two people with one job especially in a larger city with high rents. found this image while researching this topic:

enjoyable reads (link oO00o posted as well) 👍

The hackernews discussion has some interesting insights from google engineers:

Ex-Google search engineer here (2019-2023). I know a lot of the veteran engineers were upset when Ben Gomes got shunted off. Probably the bigger change, from what I've heard, was losing Amit Singhal who led Search until 2016. Amit fought against creeping complexity. There is a semi-famous internal document he wrote where he argued against the other search leads that Google should use less machine-learning, or at least contain it as much as possible, so that ranking stays debuggable and understandable by human search engineers. My impression is that since he left complexity exploded, with every team launching as many deep learning projects as they can (just like every other large tech company has).

    I’m giving this album like a 7.5

maybe it’s just not my style, maybe it’s because it sounds like they’re rehashing old ideas but maybe that’s just their sound now. I was in love with Cross, those days are long gone it seems.

Yeah had the same impression. There is no hit single on the new LP that holds the torch to the ones they had in the past. Also this ultra strong compression that made them stood out so much dates pretty badly and they still do it in a similar way

Same shit different company. Replace the people who know how to do things with toadies who manage profits but don’t give a shit about anything else. Fucking fucks. Like Boeing or GE or whatever.

Yeah they dumped the guy who built most of the architecture for someone who was already responsible of killing most of yahoos business model leaving the company without business model in muddy waters looking for fresh meat he can ram his teeth in

Finally pulled the plug on twitter. What a festering shithole. No matter how hard I tried to train my algorithm to give me music and football, I kept getting vile shit, most recently some Hitler apologetics.

    Anyways, done with it.

It’s really amazing how the Twitter landscape has changed. Check the comments under some commonly left leaning tweets or accounts. Like Greta Thunberg or news about people protesting against war or for the environment. 80% of the comments are extremely hostile and many look like bots. I wonder when this is actively starting to influence elections

  11. Yesterday I reactivated my facebook to download some old pictures I had no backup from. I was instantly greeted with some ai generated images that lead to pages opposing in political agenda. Before deactivating facebook some years ago I used a script to unfollow everything so these suggestions are really fuelling the empty internet theory. Especially as boomers and bots can’t see the difference. I don’t plan to do anything with facebook anytime in the future but it was nice to see that it’s almost as fucked up as twitter. It feels like you return to your hometown after some years and the whole town is reenacted by robots as no one is living there anymore. They should do this in malls as well
