listening to it the first with the right equipment and not just headphones or my girlfriends speakers
ohhhh shit !!!

Sometimes the simplist answers are the most telling. Why would Warp offer 24bit wav files if *this* was indicative of the final mix/master ??? I can literally hear things suppressed that should otherwise come forward. It's almost there, just not there completely. I really think a 24bit wav will reveal much more than a shit proprietary mp3 that has likely been transcoded. I have to keep going back to the increase in quality given the newer version of that 2005 soundboard and how hearing it that way was like hearing it again for the first time
yeah totally agree the final version will be 10 times better in quality
-
If this was in fact recorded to an iPhone, that would explain the compression/muddiness to this "master.". It seems like with the timbres used, the mix should be opened up a bit more. It just all sounds like what really bad headphones sound like... Blown and only reproducing the mid to high ends semiaccurately. Which is to say, the actual release is gonna sound even more lush and immersive
lol the more I think about the iphone idea the more genius it is
you could even pretend to listen to the audio on headphones while recording the sound to the phone via audio jack and having the headphones not plugged in
even if somebody would directly see you like this you could keep on pretending to listen to the sound via the headphones
but at the same time it would be impossible to control the volume which explains the clipping
-
maybe he was even interrupted while playing the track that is there twice and started the track again to have a full recording

about the leak:
I could imagine they had it in the German radio show and someone did some kind of direct recording out of the closed maybe even digital system at the radio station via a portable recording device and some audio jack cable (iphone maybe or something better which would explain the apple format and clipping)
they don't use CDs at radio stations often do they? its all on hard-drive
This is what i was thinking. Perhaps some little odd time differences can be attributed to the itunes crossfader or some equivalent people were talking about as well.
I really enjoy the album, I feel like we've gotten plenty of this type of sound layered in the work before under nice rhythmic percussion but now its more focused or present. I never clicked with regular music theory of scales and stuff so perhaps odd note progression is less important to me and I am just digging the atmosphere and odd development through the songs...ae got me into more beat heavy and hip hop based music as well so I'm sure that tips the scale as well. I've only listened to it twice so I may be back with a better understanding of what i like...
If its not ae i have a new favorite artist, if it is ae i have a new favorite album.
edit: also they better come to the bay area cause the quaristice show was 21 over and now that is not a problem lol
I would also do the audio jack cable rip in case I could not take the cd out of the studio and did not like to leave traces + its unlikely they have a cd ripper installed there which you could use without leaving traces + install some external hard drive to copy the files afterwards
attaching an iphone via audio jack cable and record it is the fastest and least traceable method
you could even remove it very fast in case you did it while nobody was there and you are being interrupted
even ripping the cd to a laptop would be much harder to hide in case its a studio where people come and go and expect these things to happen
-
and two things to all the people wondering why oversteps was played on a german radio station for the first time. germany is the second biggest music- and media-market in the world (US being first) AND, even more important: i wrote many whining posts on the de-bug website asking them (under different usernames - i´m a pathetic nerd i know) to play new ae stuff on their show, to the point where they wrote that they don´t want to get death threads so they will air it. haha
lol nice

Still blows me away that people can dislike Quaristice..... I could understand people not gettin into this one but but Quaristice?!? Bloody incredible album!
Quaristice is derivative and piecemeal. It's the one album in their catalog, that if magically disappeared and/or was never made, their creative trajectory would have never been affected.
disagree

my girlfriend hates Quaristice too
she said I would want to convert her into Autechre after listening to it very often in the last time and I should stop it lol
-
maybe the person recording the leak was unable to get direct access to the cd itself but was able to record the output
maybe they had some kind of listening session and the person responsible for the promotional cd was not giving it away so this would be the best way to do it and would also explain the clipping and double tracks
-
the radio is not obscure and the djshow is related to de:bug the biggest German experimental music magazine: http://de-bug.de/
Fair and valid point, but still it's odd because it's German. It's not that I dislike the germans, but wouldn't it be more logical if they had chosen a more international/universal source? Something English for starters?!
I looked it up again and the radio show is even a combo show of the two big German scene magazines Groove and de:bug so its really not something unimportant but sure you are right its strange in a way to not use a English one
but maybe they don't care so much who plays it first as long as its a big one
what makes me wonder that there was no real big announcement about this at all they even delayed it to a show a week later more or less randomly

I just don't get why they didn't release the files yet maybe the mastering is not finished
-
You received promo for Untilted and Quaristice you say. That leads me to think you will receive promo for Oversteps too? Right? RIGHT? :)
haha yeah hopefully so, we haven't received it yet though!
So you haven't received the promo but a, to me obscure, German radio channel did receive the promo?! Isn't that odd? If you think about it.. why does this German radio channel get the authority to play the VERY FIRST tracks over say for example Mary Anne Hobs? I reckon more people are familiar with Mary Anne Hobs.. it would attract a broader range of people... I for one hadn't heard of Radio FRITZ before...... and German > English, guess not?!
I reckon promo cd's are sent out in batch? Why would they delay your promo disc? (for which magazine do you write?)

fuck fuck
holy fucking shit fuck
oh my fuck
so you did listen to it finally
-
who did leak it by the way? it was a member of this forum right?
how about a little statement from his side about what he knows about it or is that all confidential?
-
hey wolfslice welcome to watmm, were you not getting your fill of oversteps discussion over at xltronic? don't blame you
for how much people seem to be loving this album there is surprisingly little detailed reactions to it, i mean for fuck's sake, Alcofibras track by track review was more in depth than any ACTUAL review i've read yet on any forum or blog. I got more enjoyment out of 'dicks eat em' than i did out of listening to OVersteps in it's entirety. Are they saying 'dicks eat em' or 'that's idm' on those vocal samples? i still can't tell
maybe people are still unsure where to put it as it is really some more or less unexpected turn for autechre to go all the way into melodies + confusion about leak being some kind of line rip
so if you would write a detailed review now and it would turn out fake you would kind of ridicule yourself
I did not listen to it on proper speakers yet but I am pretty impressed so far
-
A friend of mine analyzed the leak in a wave editor and noticed extreme clipping on some of the tracks. Also a sound difference visibly noticeable in the two ilanders. I reckon it's their original way of watermarking the promo by deliberately messing up different tracks on different promos.
yeah I noticed this too
-
You know what's great? Remember when we were listening to the Glasgow 2005 soundboard recording at 128kbps for over a year and then we heard the 256 version and everything opened up? The same thing is going to happen when we hear the wav files of this.
All the distortion and clipping and muddiness will be gone, and this will be 10x more immersive.
totally agree
-
I dont get it... why is that funny?
he thinks its funny as we have paid for awesome quality and spoil the experience by listening to a bad online leak
I assume he does not know that its 320kbs
I don't agree with him but I do understand the point

Can I just say this? Warp sucks. WORST marketing ever. They announce an album almost 3 months in advance and why? To build hype for those who either pre-ordered this already or will buy it regardless?!? <sarcasm>Makes Sense!</sarcasm>
This is Lame. LAME. So within a little wee message board or two, we've been tasked with hyping shit to other people who are also hyping shit.... so that we can all run around and express how much we can't wait to possess something we technically already own/paid for. Wow, this makes a ton of sense in an insular IDM-beard shithole of an environment called the internets. Good job.
There really was NO purpose of announcing this so soon. No true media splooge yet. No printed interviews. Nothing. The only purpose I see is to anger their most loyal fans. Everyone knows bands make their real money on merch (which includes lmtd. edition high quality vinyl pressings, stickers, shirts, hats, b-sides, one-offs, etc.)
Here's a solution:
Announce, then release. "Hey everybody! I'm about to come!.... Came." Release only highquality digital files and debut your "merch" the day of your first show on your upcoming tour. Print better t-shirts and begin selling soundboard recordings of your livesets.
Here, everyone is happy, more people come to your shows, and your sales increase in all lines of business.
its a similar way the ipad was marketed even with the mock-ups aka fakes

where? where? WHERE? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGHHHHHHHHH
I am feeling totally the same right now
yesterday I searched in the very old topics of the new releases section just to find something to distract me from listening to quaristice non stop
today I found a decent techno set that keeps me distracted for some time ... but how long...
-
just biked in to say i heard oversteps and it's pretty good. it's a return to the more incunabula, amber, tri, chiastic, lp5, ep7, confield, draft, untilted and quaristice ae. definitely a return to the generative software ae but also a return to the more hardware-oriented albums.
fukin lush
this

As long as it isn't just pure ambient/soundscapes/fieldrecording/... that would be boring as hell.
At the very least add subtle beats/percussion.
when quaristice is their definition of ambient I am totally in
-
Ambient and Max tracks? Ok now I'm excited, ready from a move away from the Untilted/Quaristice Machinedrum sound.
+ it sounds like quaristice cd 2 as the guy with the promo cd told
and a bit of plaid
-
So you guys are saying they will be on bleep tomorrow?
