Why are people holding this to such a high standard?

because three high profile, innovative talents went through all the effort to press such an exclusive record? seems like a fair reason to get an elevated expectation to me..its also not that the expectations were all that high either, neither are the tracks even that bad..but thats the problem. why go to all this effort to drop a couple of "okay"  tracks when between them, these three can do outstanding stuff.

i guess the answer is they have all individually made tracks that are far more effective separately.

but we know they can do some amazing music together, Ego/Mirror are both outstanding tracks and Moth/Wolf Cub are too..

its weird that if it doesn’t meet some kind of standard you consider it bad.

imagine seeing a new aphex record or a boc 12" silently show up, would you be all that weird to expect something more than just okay? would it be unreasonable to feel a little let down if a new OPN 12" didnt feel a whole lot more than meh?

the tracks arent "bad" they're just fine but not a whole lot more than that..in all honesty i kinda woulda preferred "bad" tracks so there was something to talk about but ive listened to these two tracks a handful of times each over the last couple of days and i cant remember anything about either of them.. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

imagine it’s just friends doodles. They can be precious but not necessarily perceived as amazing works of art. They aren’t pushing this. It’s black label releases of a couple tracks separated by several years time. With zero hype.

im sure most of our friend's doodles dont get pressed to vinyl on XL Records and sold in a instore only exclusive. hats off to them if yours do. this kinda project is what soundcloud or bandcamp are for.

same. they almost feel like demos or something. Thom's voice is incredibly high in the mix.

was expecting a lot more from these tracks, at least ego/mirror is still somewhat obtainable on discogs..scalpers got to this new one haaaard

*edit* just checked discogs and ego/mirror is not obtainable wtf, it was like 30 quid before this new one came out...fuckin scalpers

  4. its been a strange year all round..i think if one good thing has come from all this covid business its that musicians, labels and outlets have had a real driving force to put extra time into their work. a lot of musicians especially (in the UK at least) have found that time is the one thing we seem to have a surplus of.

trouble is, for me at least, its overwhelming sometimes. especially when bandcamp friday rolls around and the flood of new releases come through my inboxes..not a negative but very intimidating. my wishlist has never been fuller! and considering i'm in the camp of musicians putting more time into producing, its difficult to find the time to properly consume all this amazing music being released.

i've bought so much music, digital and physical, but barely had the time to touch ANY of it..again, not a negative, i love new music and stuff but my "to listen" list is absolutely swamped..

  5. Okay so i have competition the one i posted earlier..now that this has released hehe

The bit at 3:30 made me feel fuzzy inside when i made it. Did the whole track more or less in one long, 14hr sitting and the sun was rising as i started putting those bright saw pads in.

It works best in context to the rest of the track. And also go support the guys on this comp, they all wonderful an talented.

I only know a bit of theory but whenever i learn or remember a new trick I'm always like 'fuck that was actually really useful'.

In my head people who know too much theory end up creating noodle jazz and atonal inharmonic classical frippery which I don't often enjoy but maybe that's a unwarranted prejudice

yeah its great when theres a lil nugget of theory that proves to useful like that! and yeah, there is always gonna be those big brain thinker types that wank around making stuff thats functionally useless but technically impressive.."good" music, in my opinion, is functional..useful..not just clever on paper but acctually does something..goes somewhere, its gotta hit that special place where the brain just gushes feel good chems!

ive always thought about a lot of theory as, by all accounts, an analytic tool really..generally speaking, its more suited for deconstructing something after the fact to understand why it works..less so for applying during writing. buut knowing these things can help in the writing, like..another tool to yer belt i guess
