  1. Having spent a chunk of my life around audio professionals, I assure you, a trained ear, in a decent room, on decent gear, will be able to tell 16-bit from 24-bit. 16-bit has nowhere near the noise floor or dynamic range of 24-bit. And no, you wan't be able to tell the difference on a pair of Ipod headphones. Try an isolated room with a pair of dynaudio air 25's and yes, you probably would.

Okay, then surely there must at least one research study out there where someone has successfully distinguished a 16- vs. 24-bit recording in an ABX test. Care to find one? Until then I cordially invite you to shut the fuck up.

You also can go on all you want about the theory, but it's a matter of human audio perception, and yeah 16 bits are quite enough for any human being.

But fuck it, if you think it's better, go enjoy it!

  2. You're missing the point. Some people can tell the difference after having listened to both several times, as the upper frequencies that are beyond the human hearing range alter the lower frequencies that we can here, so while we don't hear the higher frequencies, what we can still hear is going to sound better.

Nope, sorry but that's bullshit, anyone who claims they can tell the difference is either lying or deluded by their bias towards wanting the "hi-res" to sound better. It's why proper listening tests are conducted blindly - see this article on blind testing and this article on ABX at hydrogenaudio. No one has ever been able blindly tell the difference between 24 and 16.

  3. yeah the 24-bit is where it's at. i can't wait to turn my KRK8's up...mmmmmm

pre-ordered CD + 16bit ...But the 24bit version, do you reckon that has been slapped out there to encourage remixing or just for high-quality listening wet-dream headphone pleasure??? OR BOTH?

I wonder. Being the audiophile I am I opted for the 24-bit version. I'm hoping it takes advantage of the dynamic range of 24-bit (eg uses less compression/has more depth or something). Quaristice would probably have benefited from that as well, it has a lot of super quiet and subtle things in the mixes.

Sorry guys but the 24-bit is quite pointless audiophile wankery. You could put Rudy van Gelder in an isolation booth better than anything in existence today with million dollar monitors, and he still couldn't tell the difference between 16 and 24.

At least Warp isn't charging more for 24-bit.

I tried hard to refrain from calling anyone an idiot but after reading some of the subsequent posts I can safely say that there are idiots afoot, yep

  4. i hope oversteps is a hiphop album with guest MCs

or better yet. a post-rock album

i don't think i would like to hear either of those... all autechre albums are hip-hop albums, lol

People always seem to throw around the guest-mc idea, which sounds great in principle, but has it ever been properly executed? I look at an album like dabrye's 2/3 and think ugh, what a mess. shit, even hiphop producer albums built around guest mcs suck 9 times out of 10.

That said, a whole album in the style of Adverse Camber would be awesome

  5. question, is any of it similar in vibe to his track "Hands"?

because I can get enough of that song making coffee in the morning.

It's more or less a continuation of the direction he took with Ringer, so don't expect anything like the folktronica of Pause or Rounds, but it's still has that warm four tet sound. Have a listen yourself, the whole album is streaming for free.

  6. guys, don´t forget to check mary anne hobbs radioshow on bbc radio. if i remember correctly she was the first one to play new quaristice tracks (Simmm, tankakern (youknowwhatimean), WNSN) back in 08

Oh yeah, a short time later they also did a guest mix on her show which was absolutely amazing. I hope they do another one for this release

  7. Currently q'd:

Koushik - Out My Window Instrumentals + Bonus Beats

    Vainqueur - Elevations

    Jello - Voile

    Beck - Mutations

DJ Rob Hall - Leisure System Mix June 09

    Miles Davis - Miles Smiles

    cv313 - Live

  8. I had an old Cowon iAudio M3, which I liked a lot. But the build quality was questionable. Went through 3 docking stations/connectors and 3 remotes in just over 2 years.

Yeah, I love the functionality, sound, and almost everything about a Cowon except the durability. I had a G3 and a 7 in succession, and each died when the play button failed prematurely. As cool as they are I can't bring myself to get another one.

  9. I've never been a huge fan of Confield (actually prefer lp5 and Draft), though for me Uviol is one of the most fascinating tracks they've ever done. While it's similar in some respects to Recury with the persistent underlying rhythm, I love the duality of it, how it oscillates between beauty and madness. And the 16+ minute version of it from the 2008 webcast is insane!

  10. Actually based on my research the need for phil collins is more like infinite summation 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/16... which mathematically converges to enough phil collins, though practically never quite reaches unity (phil collins).

  11. Alias - really underrated, awesome producer, I think he's associated with anticon but he makes some damn fine instrumental albums on his own, especially his latest Resurgam

Blockhead - Already mentioned, seems to get better with each release - I love Uncle Tony's Coloring Book, though Music by Cavelight and Downtown Science are good too. He produces a lot of Aesop Rock's stuff and probably deserves most of the credit for his success.

DJ Krush - he can be hit or miss especially since he's released a ton of stuff over the years, but overall I like his production style. Most all of his albums feature guest vocalists on some/all of the tracks - meiso and milight are decent, recently I've be listening to stepping stones which is split into two discs ("lyricism" and "soundscapes"), both of which are pretty good.

Madlib - Madlib is the man, I like Beat Konducta 1/2 almost as much as donuts, 3/4 (in India) was a bit meh only cuz Oh No made the same album in Oxperiment (only better), and 5/6 is a tribute to dilla and pretty good.

Dabrye - already mentioned, one/three and instrmntl are both great.

Nightmares on Wax - Still love smoker's delight and carboot soul!

The Herbaliser - good funk/hiphop/soundtrack type music, although most of their albums feature guest MCs on about 1/2 the tracks.

Also track down some of the instrumentals of DJ Premier & Pete Rock productions, those guys are pretty much hiphop legends in beatmaking

  12. Where are the other lines, kiss your hand, etc.?

This would lead one to believe this is just a coincidence and the sample is from somewhere else

i see what you did there
