I would say apples and oranges. Every time Autechre zags, with few exceptions, I'm daunted at the prospect of acclimating to the new flavor. Because of the implication that this is what they're going to sound like from here on out / for a while. In this case, it doesn't sound much like anything else in their catalog. So in that sense it's kind of nice to now have some Autechre that's really colorful and painterly. Though after a day and a half of sucking on this leak, I'm gravitating towards the greyer releases - Chiastic, Envane, Draft, Quaristice. Beware of some serious earworms. see on see is firmly lodged.

Yeah, I had been thinking about getting a Machinedrum until this leak. I am thinking about a Monomachine now. I recognize that they probably favored Max/MSP over the Elektron gear this time (though I'm pretty sure I still hear some), something about the colorfulness of the melodies and tones makes me think I would have more fun with a Monomachine, at least right now.

I don't get how that spoils the experience. I remember recording Second Bad Vilbel off MTV Amp when I was 14, and playing it over and over. When I finally bought the album and heard the proper version, I nearly shit my pants. It sure didn't ruin it for me.

Yeah, frankly having paid for my copy, I don't feel so bad about downloading it early. I guess that's why I'm not a copyright lawyer?

Could you guys explain to me why you are holding out for the release date? I'm just wondering. Is it a moral thing? Do you not want your impressions sullied by a 2nd/3rd rate copy? My brother's the same way about Autechre. I don't mean to condescend about it; I just don't get it.

You know how Autechre albums almost always sound better with repeated listens? This one moreso than usual. Like water becoming more saturated with a solute via stirring. My mind keeps reaching for metaphors about colored lights or fluid. Purple and green. I am REALLY digging all this simple FM and just blatant synth cheese. They're trying to change the way they are listened to.

It's not just that the melodies are "back", it's like they are doing melodies analagous to (not the same as) how everyone else does melodies. I guess that's called "accessible". I like it but it's fucking weird. It's like, Autechre were always a parallel universe, a dream place. And now that barrier is gone and the ideas from other places are appearing here, it's kind of cool, thrilling, liberating, but also scary and kind of sad. I'm almost like the end of a good episode of Intervention, when they show the recovering addict all healthy and sobered up and speaking lucidly about their experience. Like...growing up?

It's really quite good. I dunno about this Super Nintendo RPG / Japanese folk melody stuff though. It'll take some time to grow on me.

I got it but I was recording from a different computer and at a different sample rate. Still sounds pretty OK.
